View Full Version : +7REP FOR ADVICE: PS3 OR 360?

Basically it's a case of selling my PS3 to get another 360 I can have to myself (instead of using the one in my brother's room). I know I've been dragging this on for ages so don't hate, but I'm having second thoughts about selling my PS3. I just got a TV for my room so I can finally have it there and even though I usually play on our 360, I'm guessing I'd start enjoying the PS3 more once I got a few more games.
I'm a casual gamer really, I've always only played one or two games at a time (for weeks or even months) before moving onto another. Apart from the occasional game of FIFA 09 on the PS3 (which makes me want to smash the thing lol) the only things I've played since before the summer are COD4 and MW2 on the 360. Even though I played it long before, I only got Killzone 2 while I was in the middle of this COD phase so I completely lost the knack for it and I was looking forward to making something on Little Big Planet but there's too much distracting stuff on it and it's sooo time consuming :P. But I'm sure there will be other games in the future I'll wish I could get, like Gran Turismo 5.
The reasons I've favoured the 360 so far have included;
- better online gaming
- prefer the feel of controller
- ease of use rather than constant boring downloads
- various little features that make it more enjoyable
It makes more sense for me to keep the PS3 though because all my gamer mates have them and if I trade it in I'm obviously going to be losing a lot on what I spent on it.
Anyway I'm going to sort of forget about my own opinions of each console and ask you guys for any advice you have. PLEASE don't just dismiss either console as being rubbish. I'll +rep people who explain points well and give reasons for opinions.
tl;dr: disregarding cost, which console would you recommend for a casual gamer and why?!
Cheers :) xx

why throw one away when you can have both? I do...

Because I hate having to go into my brother's room to play the 360 rather than having it to myself and being free to play it when I like.

If your wanting to get a Xbox360 then by all means trade in your PS3.
For a casual, and I mean casual gamer I would recommend the Wii but of course you dont want that so go for the 360. As you said the online is better and it has the various features like Facebook, Twitter and such. The PS3 may have a slight, slight advantage in graphics but the 360 more than makes up for it online-wise.

Haha got rid of my Wii long time ago - I guess I'm not that casual :P. I'm not interested in the extras like Facebook etc (although I was just using iPlayer on the PS3). That's probably the only internet extra I'd use out of the two consoles so the PS3 probably wins that one, for me at least (although there is a lot of room for improvement with the iPlayer feature).
The online on the 360 is vastly superior but the trade in will give me a loss of about £200 on my PS3 straight off (if I get cash), probably not much less for part-ex. That, and the fact that I have a few mates on PSN versus none on XBL kind of doesn't justify chucking it. Of course, I'm already paying for XBL anyway on the 360 we already have, so whether I get another one or not won't cost me any more in that sense.
Grrr the two options are so balanced. The only thing that's tipping the scales really is the fact I'll be losing a significant amount of money if I do it. And the way nobody seems to see all the flaws in the PS3 which make me hate it, just suggests that I haven't given it enough of a chance so I may regret getting rid of it (now that I think of it, that happens every time I get rid of a console!).
I guess this thread is essentially me just thinking out loud :P. Anyway, I'd rep but I need to spread. Thanks for the input though :).

Here is the explaination in lame-mans terms:
The Xbox's online community is better than the PS3's (in my opinion).
The PS3's features of the console overall are better than the Xbox's (one again, in my opinion).
Even though I own an Xbox360, I would also like to own, or I would say, rather own a PS3 due the the console itself being better.
Don't argue with me, this is all my opinion.

Casual gamers should get a ps3 just because you gotta pay for xbox live, it's money down a drain if you don't play frequently. With the PS3 you can play when you want without paying.
But it's the sense of what suits you best. You've got a ps3 and your bro's got an xbox so I suggest simply keeping the PS3 and you have a 360 aswell.

When I say casual, I kind of mean I just don't play a wide range of games on a regular basis. I play COD quite regularly but that's about it (until I get bored of that and move onto a new sort of game). Also like I said, I already pay for XBL.
Thanks for your advice guys xx

Depends on preference, if you prefer more games on one console over the other then get/keep that. However if you only play like 1 or 2 games on it that you could live without or has an equivalent on the other system get/keep that one.
Personally I prefer the PS3 for:
-More powerful hardware (however slightly slower in areas).
-The exclusives that use bluray are awesome, and so are some norm ones. Cool arcade ones too I suppose but I can't compare those. -Uncharted 2, simple as.
-Don't like microsoft, money milkers.
Obviously being Sony are quite far in too, they have alot of subsidaries and still quite alot of developer support considering that they're currently "last".

That's what I'm thinking, and I can just buy COD for the PS3 init.

Continue with the PS3 and just save the money for a 360. You said you'll make a £200-ish loss on the PS3 if you trade it in, if you do it will probably make you feel sick :P

TBH i dont really know much about gaming consoles except from the wii and ds but when i went on the xbox at my friends house it was quiet good graphics and easy to use but when i went on my brother ps3 it had better graphics but the ocntrols were harder to use. so i think i woudl go for the xbox and get rid of the ps3 but tbh its up to you :P

why spend money on your own live when you can just bum off your brothers and spend his money?
Black_Apalachi
31-12-2009, 02:36 PM
Cos I don't wanna go on his account? Nor does he want me to.
For me it would be, "Do I want Blu-ray or not?", they both do the same thing except one is a blu-ray player.

I don't require it but it's just an added bonus - not exactly a reason to get rid.
Read up on the argument I made a while ago.

I really don't think you're a casual gamer, most casual gamers can stick with less than one game every 3 months. They're the type of people who only really game on core games like MW2, or some of the Mario titles on the Wii.
By all means, you could be just be a middle-ground, which I think is leaning more towards core gamer.
Damn gaming being divided.
I'd get a PS3 if you're a casual gamer though, and have the money, I know all the arguments of online wotsits but we have Facebook and you can put Twitter into your doodoo. I'm not going to make the argument that it's free anymore, because things might change. For the better.

Your description of a casual gamer there sums me up pretty well.

Well since you ask which one is best for casual gamer and you only play a couple of games at a time then I have to say PS3, or you're paying for an online subscription you don't even need. And the games you quoted aren't console exclusive either. The PS3 online mode is still pretty decent and for games like mw2 you can't compare the online because it works the same way.
I don't require it but it's just an added bonus - not exactly a reason to get rid.
Then keep the ps3. Blu-ray as an added bonus, no need to lose your cash when trading it in.
I'm sure the gameplay is just as good online as it is on xbl.

Why do you think you need online to make a system. I've been playing my 360 this week far more offline than I have online. I've been going through Mass Effect again and that has consumed over 20 hours of my time offline. That is another reason you should buy a 360, Mass Effect :eusa_clap
Your all exaggerating about the online cost. £40 a year is nothing, you get what you pay for. PSN is terrible coming from XBL. When I played Modern Warfare 2 it seemed that 1/3 of the games disconnected, this happens I'd say 1/10 of the time on 360. It isnt my connection as everyone disconnects. I've have to update my PS3 for over 2 hours and I've only had it one week. They're basically the same though but I prefer my 360 seeing as it has exclusives I want.

Depends which of your mates have ps3 and xbl and what your gonna use it for. If your gonna be just a gamer person and play with your mates go for whatever they have. But then ps3 works out cheaper if your gonna buy wireless xbl extra controllers a good headset etc.

You get a free controller with the 360 plus a free headset. Again, if you cant sacrifice £40 a year for a gaming console then you shouldn't be classified as a gamer as your probably going to spend that £40 on a bad game or shovelware (MW2 MadCatz Merchandise is an example) anyway.

But some consoles don't have online so therefore they're not a gamer? I'd rather buy a £40 game then £40 for online, but oh wait I can't play the game so the online is wasted.

What you mean those 5 that are only on 360 and the rest on PC (hint mass effect).
However I do agree about you don't need online to make a system, I've played MGS4 story loads and uncharted 2, MW2 and twice of GTA (but that was to see the different outcomes).

Right, nobody's reading the thread any more before posting so I'm going to close it. Like I said, I already have both consoles online so the only costs that I will have to worry about are if I want to get a headset for the PS3 really. Not sure if I should get COD for it as well and just start again.
Anyway I've kind of settled with just keeping my PS3 in my room and putting up with the hassle from my brother when I go in his room to play the 360 :P.
Thanks for trying to help guys, I'll try to give rep where I can x
