Don't really listen to much music tbh, but Lady Gaga pleasantly suprised me.

I always thought she was some talentless wierd looking scary woman.

But I actually like some of her songs now, and think she has quite a unique voice, which is really rather nice.

BEP, not actually a group I listen to often (other than nights out obv) but they seem incapable of making a bad song

Don't really know how to judge this. I guess I could say Lady Gaga cos of how she kind of burst onto the scene, appears to be really nice, original and pretty talented I would say. And she doesn't seem to have let all that harsh criticism get to her.

Then again, Bruce Springsteen did have actual steam coming off him at Glastonbury!!! :8

Lady GaGa definately.
Even though I was a fan of hers before 2009 I don't think any artist as the moment can rival her music & talent

More surprised than impressed, but probably the Horror's change of direction

The xx take my most impressive new act though

Chipmunk deffo, he's good and he's not like all the other rappers who wear their pants to their knees, he's just a rapper

paolo nutini because he creates his own songs (with his band) and sings them perfectly. And is a one of a kind atm.

prolly animal collective. even though their albums in 09 aren't as good as strawberry jam and sung tongs, its crazy how much attention theyve been getting. theyve been able to make their songs more accessible without changing their incredible weirdness.

GAGAAA

I first heard Just Dance in summer 08 and I was like meh average theb by what February I was obsessed and I still am. No one can deny she was the biggest breakthrough artist of 2009 and for me 2009 will always be her year :)

I wonder if any new artist will match her success this year? Ke$ha anyone..?

this man speaks the truth.

the fact they released a perfect album at the start of the year, then managed to follow it up with another perfect EP before the year finished was amazing.

honestly i think the fall be kind ep is even more solid than merriweather post pavillion. hopefully thats a sign that their next album will be even more epic. mpp is very good but i think ill always have a deeper love of strawberry jam. once theyre done with their tour, which is very soon, theyre going back to the studio for another full length, i honestly wouldnt be surprised if their next album is out by the end of the year, they work really fast. usually their albums are spaced anywhere between a year to a year and a half apart.

i hope a new album drops soon, although i'm not so sure - panda is doing a lot of solo shows and may have his own stuff in the pipeline. not that i'd complain about that.

have to agree on MPP vs FBK - fall be kind is even better. just wish there was more of it.

I think there was a huge influx in fresh artists in 2009, which was great. But I can't pick just one so I'ma go with:

Florence + the Machine
Miike Snow
La Roux
Lady Gaga

thank you blogosphere.
Glad someone prefers Strawberry Jam to MPP. I don't think MPP is the best this year though.
I haven't had continuous listens to Fall Be Kind, probably got too many CDs for Christmas.

yeah, imo theres a good 4 or 5 songs on strawberry jam that are better than anything on mpp, and most of the others are just as good. for reverend green is probably my favorite animal collective song ever haha. i dont think mpp is the best this year either though, ive been listening to other albums much more it seems. i didnt really think about what album i think was best in 09, but its probably a tie between bitte orca by dirty projectors and OB4CL pt. 2 by raekwon.

fall be kind is great, for the most part its much more relaxed and quiet than anything theyve ever done but its really pretty. "on a highway" has grown on me so much.

for reverend green is my favourite AC song too! well, either that or april & the phantom. although MPP is probably my album of the year, maybe 2nd only to the horrors "primary colours".

as for FBK, i was the same. at first i didn't really like bleed/on a highway, but now i appreciate them. very chilled.

There were so many this year:

Passion Pit, Temper Trap, Lady Gaga, Mumford & Sons, Volcano Choir, Miike Snow.. those are off the top of my head. Also really loved Biffy's new album.
