Engadget, Ars Technica, and others are reporting that Apple has issued invitations for a media event scheduled for 10:00 AM Pacific Time on January 27th. The event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and the invitation's tag line reads "Come see our latest creation."

Apple had been rumored earlier this month to have scheduled a media event for that date and location, and the company is widely expected to introduce its highly-anticipated tablet device at the event.

What are we all expecting? Tablet is probably one of the main ones everyone is expecting. But anything else? :P

Probably another iPhone which everyone will wet themselves over because it has a feature phones have had for well over 10 years. But other than that, the tablet I guess :/

I don't think they will do the iPhone this event until at least June/July like previous years. :P

why does everyone hate on the iphone? its quite clear that its one of the most useable phones around, and most popular. yes ok, it shouldve had copy and paste, and mms, and a camera etc etc, but what people arent realising is that it brought so much more. It focused on usability. Apps, google maps, touch screen technology, and of course included the ipod..

im not too sure what to expect but id hope i see something good lol.

because my n97 does the same and more as the iphone and better and for less price. same with many phones. i hate my n97 by the way - i just don't 'agree' with the iphone fad.

The iPhone technically isn't that amazing although it includes a decent processor, ram and multi-touch. However software is where it comes into it's own. Whatever you say, it is indisputable that it has the best appstore on the market and the widest array of applications available. Yes it may be expensive but on a phone vs phone basis then I'd say it's the best on the market by a significant margin.

nothing wrong with it's touchscreen.

the camera's better. it can even shoot video, like phones have done since the dawn of time. it also plays music, 32gb worth if you wish. it has maps, gps, sat nav, apps (ovi store) and a physical keyboard instead of a fiddly touchscreen ones etc etc.

i'm not bigging the n97 up because it's far from perfect, i'm contemplating getting another phone (not iphone, unless price comes down). there's nothing wrong with the iphone - it's great - it's just that it's WAY overpriced.

I agree, and I might be an android guy but I'll still admit the iPhone makes that crapberry and windows mobile look like a piece of junk that shouldn't have existed.

it seemed to me to be unresponsive like most i think ive seen. 3GS shoots video? Its much easier to transfer music on an iphone if youve already had an ipod, no additional software needed etc. i find the qwerty keyboards on blackberrys and on the N97 really tiny and hard to use. The iphone dedicates a lot of screen space to it and enlarges the letters.

I do agree though that it is slightly over priced, but its apple, what are you gonna do lol :P

To be honest people who point out the fact that the iPhone's technology is old hat has clearly never owned one themselves - it's not about that, it's the appeal of the iPhone that makes it so exciting whenever any changes are made to it. It's a beautiful piece of gadgetry that is just so well put together, the interface is perfect and it is capable of so much - it's just a shame that Apple have so many restrictions on what app developers can and can't do.

Anyway this media event sounds exciting - the tablet is most likely what will be unveiled along with the iPhone 4. I reckon they will be more geared towards Mac-related things though, maybe new designs for the Mac Pro, or a new AirPort wireless connection system?

A Touchscreen iMac would be useful for some, alot of people seem to use them in their kitchens as a sort of media device so the less space the better. Not an amazing feature (been around for years/decades), but a plausible one at that :)

I don't know what the whole hype about touch screen/tablet PC is? The only place I have ever seen a tablet PC used was at Paragon Honda in Woodside and at Lakeview Mercedes in Rockville. When you pull your car in to the service bay you give them the keys and they take the tablet to the car and record the mileage and what needs to be done. The last time I took the car in for servicing they didn't even use the tablet.

A large touch screen display seems like too much work to me.

I find them extremely useful, if they make it so you can rest your arm on the screen and write with a stylus it could very well take over traditional paper notepads.

Read some rumours it'll be around $800 in the US on contract with Verizon, I assume that's overall and it would include airtime/internet access. Or $1000 directly from Apple themselves?

Add on the UKs "Apple Tax" and we're looking at £550-800.

iPad is a bit of an odd name, I hadn't heard it suggested before surprisingly. Sounds too much like an iPod.

The likes of emailing, calendar and address book look amazing on it, however the home screen looks terrible and so does the device in general with the typical "one button" in the bottom centre. I'm yet to be surprised by this, it doesn't look like they've whipped something awesome and new out the bag, simply the larger iPhone as expected.

It's borderline lame but in 10 years I think mobile devices like this are going to be mainstream in work and school settings and for a lot of day-to-day life. Sure having a full OS like Windows 7 or OS X on a mobile device like this is the best, but we have to make the transition to devices like this where the device is in an "always on always ready" state without consuming much juice when we're not using it. Google and Apple are already in play here. If this is a market to be exploited Microsoft better not miss out again *cough iphone, android*

It may actually surprise you, but given the current exchange rate there is really only a slight difference between prices in the states and here in the UK now, this is because of how weak the £ has become and how strong the $ has come, and the fact that I was recently in the states and couldn't really pick up any bargains at all, were more or less the same prices as back home. I purposely came on today to see what happens, and so far all I've seen is what looks like an iPod Touch XL with underwhelming technology. Yeah they could have, but porting it to a different architecture, redesigning the interface and making the thing have incredibly efficient standby and fast booting would have taken a long time just so I can run my un fingerfriendly apps on it. This way developers have to recreate applications with a new and better SDK too, so we will have more finger friendly applications. One of the problems with Windows Mobile is how we're still using our old dated apps with fail finger friendliness. No motivation for developers to make something better because people with winmo phones have no choice but to buy the failapps anyways.

Screw osx and windows in the future. I want light fast and efficient oses :D

If you could feed photos from cameras directly into it, it would be much more useful IMO, being able to view and edit decent photos while out and about would be great for amateur photographers. The only things that are missing from this iPad are;-

- Camera on the front
- 128GB model
- Bigger Processor, 1.5 would have been nice
- Some sort of over the air syncing with iPhones/PCs.
- Sleeker design on the front
- Different OS, not the iPhones OS, at least.

My guess is; starting pricce £379 or something along those lines. If we are lucky £349.99. But I highly doubt it.

I see.

$499 is £309, so maybe it could be as low as £329.99? although I doubt it.

$999 equates to £806 in "Apple Land" so it's going to be at least £399 I'd say.

If they price the iPad at around £350 I will be amazed. If they do I would get one. Afterall looking into what to spend the cash on, but tbh, I could get a netbook and I would get a 'keyboard' that you don't pay extra for, and I wouldn't have to put up with over priced stuff.

Did they show anything else? New iPod touches?

I'm very tempted. Roughly around £375 for a 16Gb with no 3G, I'd say, so £500 if you want 3G. It isn't THAT expensive for Apple, really.

I'm assuming these will start being signed up to networks soon (namely 3, I'm guessing.)

i hope apple will finally be getting a new website. Its nice at the minute, but could do with being updated, especially now that they wont have room on the nav bar

No they're not locked to a network, at all.

But will that matter over here? AFAIK no networks have microSIMs?

They might do a european version that uses normal SIM cards.

Yeah because on the slide that mentioned micro sims, it was about a USA deal. We don't find out about international ones until later on in the year.

Yeah it was an "iPad" event to be honest.

Not a clue.

But are changable backgrounds on homescreens going to be ported over to iPhone OS 4.0?

Completely pointless, shouldn't sell that well either, no multitasking.

They'll develop multitasking (well SHOULD) in OS 4.0 for the iPhone and iPad to keep up with android and other smart phones.

Now I have seen that it looks mightily impressive. Hopefully they'll bring many of those features in that OS to the iphone. E.g. Landscape springboard, mail app, etc.

Don't see why we can't get the non-3G version at the same time if the 3G network is the only dispute. Anyways only £520, so after we get screwed £599 for the 64GB 3G one. Good replacement for my old iPT.

Don't think I'd want to pay a seperate contract for this. Would be better if I could get it along with a contract for a phone. i.e Phone Contract + iPad Unlimited stuff for x amount.

Just a question to those with iPhones, if you only google and watch the occasional YouTube video, would that use more than the 250MB contract?

erm, ive noticed one flaw with it.
if it doesnt have a docking station in landscape mode, most photos are in landscape mode and if you wanted to show just one photo every time, its going to look a bit silly? i mean yeh, the origami things cool, but i think i still prefer good old fashioned fade in fade out lol

Very good point, I wonder if that will be addressed.

I think the tablet is a "fail". I was expecting the iPad to be more like a MacBook, meaning it could do mostly everything a MacBook could do, just as a tablet. The iPad is a 10" iPod Touch. I feel so much better about my MacBook purchase now.

But the whole point of using it as a photo frame was so it could charge at the same time. Plus, who'd have that cover and use something like that for displaying photos lol.

I probably won't get one anytime soon, but i'd love to hve one lol

Yeah same with my uncle. This is a device that appeals to a more older age range, like 20-40 year olds mainly. Although It had caught my eye I must admit, but I think I'll be waiting till next year IF I do get one. :P

i was expecting more out of the ipad other than being just a gigantic iphone. and ipad is a terrible name lol. but that being said it's relatively cheap for what it is, surprising coming from apple. i have no use for one though.
