FRESH doubts were cast over controversial global warming theories yesterday after a major climate change argument was discredited. The International Panel on Climate Change was forced to admit its key claim that Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035 was lifted from a 1999 magazine article. The report was based on an interview with a little-known Indian scientist who has since said his views were “speculation” and not backed up by research.

It was also revealed that the IPCC’s controversial chairman, Dr Rajendra Pachauri, described as “the world’s top climate scientist”, is a former railway engineer with a PhD in economics and no formal climate science qualifications. Dr Pachauri was yesterday accused of a conflict of interest after it emerged he has a network of business interests that attract millions of pounds in funding thanks to IPCC policies.

One of them, The Energy Research Institute, has a London office and is set to receive up to £10million from British taxpayers over the next five years in the form of grants from the Department for International Development. Dr Pachauri denies any conflict of interest arising from his various roles. Yesterday, critics accused the IPCC of boosting the man-made global warming theory to protect a multi-million pound industry. Climate scientist Peter Taylor said: “I am not surprised by this news. A vast bureaucracy and industry has been built up around this theory. There is too much money in it for the IPCC to let it wither.”The lies and spin are finally melting away.

Thoughts?

The shoe* is really going to hit the fan soon. It does make you wonder if there is any truth behind any theories like this anymore.

What can you do though? If the government can't trust the scientists then there's little else they can do, they'd just look stupid to ignore the scientists.

No easy way out that's for sure.

Always doubted it, unnecessary and a way to scare the public into doing things.

The world is heating up anyway, we just speeded it up a bit thats all. Also, we're still in an ice age

well imho it's just one case and this doesn't dis-prove or somehow manage to completely destroy the climate change theory.

therefore i still believe pollution has an effect on this world and this one small thing doesn't really deteriorate my ideas on climate change

just my opinion

The 'worlds top climate scientist' doesn't even have a science qualification, in other words he isn't even a climate scientist. If that doesn't make you re-think anything then I don't know what will, especially as this comes just a few months after Climategate where we found data was actually being intentially sexed up. On top of this, the Earths temperature has not risen in the past 10 years which is a scientific fact.

The original quote was from the Beeb, I'm surprised you're taking it so seriously.

If you're on about those emails, then watch this video by potholer54 (http://www.youtube.com/user/potholer54#p/c/A4F0994AFB057BB8/5/7nnVQ2fROOg). It's media spin, not foul play.

Some school teachers aren't qualified to teach in private schools but they get along just fine.
I'm not going to re-think my whole idea on just one thing like this which isn't exactly a breakthrough.

this doesnt change my opinion at all.

im not a scientist, i dont really know if climate change is real or not, but climate change activists' agenda certainly isnt that terrible. we are running out of fossil fuels, and we do need new sources of energy. people are generally terrible to the planet, and making rules to keep the place we live clean is a good idea, methinks. plus new energy sources would put a lot of good competition in our economy that needs it.

All forms on indoctrination. It's only a matter of time before people discover the lies that Government hides. However I do agree with Redstratocas, we knew this was lies and stuff and we're ok, but more efficient substanes would be cool.

The only reason we use nuclear energy, or burn fossil fuels is because it makes the energy companies more money. Truth be told, tidal, wave, wind and solar energy would cover the entire planets electricity needs several times over. Geothermal energy (underwater hot vents) would provide the planets energy thousands of times over and is completely renewable, as the earth is always generating heat.
