View Full Version : If you had the choice would you go private?

I'm not asking if you're happy or unhappy but at the start of secondary school would you have gone to paid private school if you had the choice?

For me it's diffrent because we have the 11+ so i don't see the need for private education because we are already ranked on ability. The only reason people pay to go to private here is because the parents can't face their children being "bottom of the pile" so it's a snobby thing. They aren't even "bottom of the pile" they're merely in the school which suites their ability. Hence why I disagree.

However in England my dad went to a private school in Birmingham under scholarship because the comprehensive in Dudley was and still is in my opinion shocking :eusa_whis Hence why i would have applied for scholarship at a Grammar school like the one i'm at now except i'm not paid it's top 20% in island only.

Basically i'm really bored and killing time before 8 out of 10 and Billie Piper appearing on JonnyRoss.

yeah just cause the standard of education would be better and rich people would be hotter, also less druggies and stupid people to socialise with.

It depends how much money I had. If I had a ridiculous amount and I was looking for something to spend cash on, then yeah. Otherwise, no.

If kids are going to succeed in life they can push and motivate themselves, regardless of which school they go to. We have a standardised exam system with a set syllabus, so it's not like you would learn completely different content.

I went to a failing comprehensive and I wouldn't have had it any other way. All the talk of a 'better quality' education doesn't wash with me.

Nah i wouldnt. Never liked the look of people representing private schools in the past. Always look too snobby and stuck up, which i'm sure isnt really the case. Plus the people at my normal school were great.

I've been to private and comprehensive, When I have kids if I can afford it I'll send them private, I enjoyed it more and I learned more in my time there.

no.

only 1 reason. Friends and you learn more than the normal subjects at a public school. (aka you learn much more through other people there to)

I would of loved to have gone to a private school, but I guess it's good that I didn't because I'd end up being all snobbish and thinking I was better than everyone else. I mean sure, the public schools aren't the best, but they're reality. In work, there won't be a special section for people who pay.
If it was all about the grades, I would say yes.
But because socializing to me is a big part of school, and you have to learn to work with everyone, no.

yeah less skanks at private schools.

I did have a choice. I chose public school.

I voted no but I'm on the verge of no opinion because if I'm honest, I don't really know what the difference is. The only thing I have to go on is that private is full of posh kids, but I wouldn't be surprised if that turned out to just be a stereotype.

If I look at it from the perspective of the education I had; in primary school I would say I was definitely one of the brighter kids (and now that I think about it, that was full of posh kids anyway lmao), but in secondary school I was pretty average (laziness is no doubt the villain lol). I'm guessing a private school would be a whole step higher which would probably make me one of the lower achievers so I'm happy with the schools I went to.

Btw, I'm sure the thread has got private vs public backwards? ..Or maybe it's just me :P.

There are many schools in Peterborough, and if I hadn't got into the one I did (6th best in country) my parents would have paid anything to keep me out of the other **** schools around here, I would say 100% of the sudents have a family income above the national average and most are quite rich :) They are very social and spend tonnes on nights out! :P

It's people like that which repel me from the private schools here. I am in just as good a school as you if not better without paying. I'm not being rude and you are lucky to have been brought up like that but there is no need to brag.. What are your GCSE results looking like and what is your school GCSE and A level pass rate please :)!

Personally I think prive it just stupid. Education is supposed to be free in this country, but some people are happy with that, they have to spend money, my mate used to go private, she said it was full of s****. So I never will. And I won't send my kids to a private school. And my brother has been predicted to get straight A's and he's been to a normal school all his life, I don't care if I don't get an amazing mark at Maths because the job I want isn't majorly concentrated on Maths, I just want a C in maths and an A in English and a couple of others, but not really discussed that. No big deal about private school.

same.

i wouldn't go private because 1, my school was better than some private schools and 2, when you get to a-levels, it's about how much time and effort you put into understanding your subjects.

I'd never trade the experience of my school for a private school, it's been so good and you get a good variety of people at public schools.

My days at school were some of the best days of my life and I wouldn't have swapped them for any other school.

At the end of the day, I came out of school with 13 GCSEs grade A*-B, I could have got 13 A*-A if I had tried harder, but that's nothing to do with the school it's simply my work ethic. I fail to see how spending an obscene amount of money can better someones education.

People say that there would be a better class of people, well to be honest, wherever you go in life there's going to be people you don't get on with...

No, jesus christ the private school kids are so up themselves, they have worse drug problems than the community college I went to, and most of them were ***** anyway. Why pay for more of the **** when you can get less of it for free? I mean, you ever met a stuckup comprehensive kid?

I haven't, but then they probably got beaten up in their first year. :)

not one bit, i have the opinion that you're more faced to real life by going to a state or comprehensive school. however private schools round here do FAR better in terms of results, but the grades i get are very good anyway so theres no need for me to go private.

I'd hate to go to a private school. All schools are teaching the same lessons and it's all about what you put in. It seems to be that parents send their kids to private schools because they have so much money to burn or they don't want their kids being with the poorer/'common' kids.

While I wouldn't swap my school for another, private schools are better and if given the choice I probably would of chosen to of gone to a private school.

Public schools give you a wake-up call on life if you ask me.

They toughen you up for the real world, as the real world isn't all tea at lunctime and blazers.

Plus teachers don't have to be qualified to teach and honestly, I would want a good standard of teaching.

But as someone mentioned, friends. You'll make more friends in a public school than private simply because of the vast amount of people actually there.

Just my opinion.

No I wouldn't, 9 times out of 10 private schools are worse than state schools in terms of standards of teaching. No private schools around here have an outstanding OFSTED report for example

How do you know if you've never been that's a massive generalization i'm not for it but your view seems really narrow minded.

Yeah i see what you mean but that might be some people lives. If you go to the best schools in england like eton or whatever you may not have to work because of your familys money but guess that's rare.

I go to a grammar where you can't pay only pass so you get proper brainy kids and fun because we're not s**** some have the money to pay to go private but why bother when we have the best school in my area anyway. We have better results then the private schools anyway LOL

Public.
A) No point getting my parents to pay for it as I do alright already.
B) I've probably learnt more (in terms of life) here then I would have in a private. If you go to private it's like your instantly living the rich life which you're not.
C) The private school near me is full of s**** where some are just dull, boring with no imagination what so ever. They're so dull I couldn't start a convo with them.

You can take a horse to a river but you can't get it to drink.
You can put someone into a private school but it won't get them to learn any better.
