Do you need a router for online play? Does it come when you buy the Xbox?

And do you need like one of the portable routers that cost about £80?

Thanks

You need a router for more than 2 item online, so unless you want to unplug your computer everytime you put your xbox on you'll need one

and can easily get a cheap £30 one and that'll do :P

scottish
23-01-2010, 04:28 PM
does it have ethernet connections in back? most routers have 4 ethernet ports in back of the router if so then its fine if not then you need to get the wireless thing for xbox.

Ardemax

Yeah we got 4 ethernets.

Does the Xbox connect with the back of that then? *noob comment*

Oh right then, would you recommend a wireless thing then? Because I don't exactly want the Xbox in that room... lol

And how much does one cost?

if you have a laptop connected to a wireless network in your home then you can save yourself £40, by connecting your xbox to your laptop with the ethernet cable ;)

Imo wireless isnt worth it. The connection is rubbish compared to wired and cuts out alot. Youd be best buying a big 10m ethernet lead for about 7.99 and just using it wired and unplugging everytime you aint using it. Its alot stronger connection and you wont get cut out if you get a poor signol in your room.

well i do have a laptop yes. so i buy an ethernet cable and connect it to that?

ok lol

also the ethernet cable icon looks a bit like a phone with 4 dots on it?

ecstasy

connecting it to your laptop is still wireless
if you can, buy an ethernet cable and go wired, you'll never have connection problems

aye bigtime, a wierd connection is more reliable better than a wireless. sayin that ive played online via my laptop for a while now and not had many problems.

Cables are more reliable than wireless but we use a wireless adapter for our Xbox and it's worked great since we got it.

ecstasy
31-01-2010, 01:09 PM
wireless cause it still travels from your router to your laptop wirelessly

Ardemax
31-01-2010, 06:00 PM

Eoin
02-02-2010, 04:24 PM
15m if you want to connect you xbox direct to your router (if its quite far away)

A smaller one if you want to connect your xbox to your laptop (because you can place your laptop next to your xbox)

did you not get a ethernet free with your xbox??

Ardemax
06-02-2010, 10:38 PM
well i dont have ma xbox yet, but ill see!!!

ecstasy

Router ----> Xbox (via ethernet) = you'll want a cable long enough to reach your xbox from your router

Router ----> Laptop (wirelessly) ----> Xbox (via Ethernet) = you'll want a cable long enough to reach your xbox from your laptop, which wont need to be long

Only thing with using your laptop though is that it'll always need to be on whenever you're playing online. Not a huge deal but might be a bit annoying.

Ardemax

i may just connect it straight to the router

one problem is my xbox will be upstairs and router downstairs

help? lol

Haven't we established that you're going to need to do this;

... Router ----> Laptop (wirelessly) ----> Xbox (via Ethernet) = you'll want a cable long enough to reach your xbox from your laptop, which wont need to be long

Only thing with using your laptop though is that it'll always need to be on whenever you're playing online. Not a huge deal but might be a bit annoying.

umm no

router -> xbox via ethernet

Blinger1
10-02-2010, 05:31 PM
The downside to Ethernet over long distances is that the cables look tacky lying over the ground. We have one huge cable running under our house into my room but it isn't plugged in on either side

Black_Apalachi
11-02-2010, 01:01 AM
umm no

router -> xbox via ethernet

So what's your question then? :S Either get a really long cable running from your room to the router downstairs or do what Kieran said. They're your only options other than buying a wireless adapter for your 360

Ardemax
13-02-2010, 03:15 PM
im just wondering is there a way that the cable can be like, not seen from the 360 to the router, like under floorboards or something, but without too much hassle?

Black_Apalachi
13-02-2010, 03:49 PM
Well you could run it along under the edge of the carpet, just tack it down along the way. Ask your parents about it

Ardemax
15-02-2010, 02:22 PM
okay nice one, but say if i did get a router, is it reliable?

Black_Apalachi
15-02-2010, 03:09 PM
If you're using cables then I don't think it matters what router you get.

Ardemax

I'm having a re-think (AGAIN!!!).

This: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Catz-Wireless-Network-Adaptor-Xbox/dp/B002MZZLPA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1266339989&sr=1-3

or this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-360-Wireless-Network-Adaptor/dp/B000AYTQ7O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1266339989&sr=1-1

And then I could just connect it to the xbox and we're all dandy?

Black_Apalachi
17-02-2010, 10:17 AM
LMAO that's what we were saying to do in the first place :P I've never seen that Mad Catz thing and based on the customer reviews for it, I'd stick with the 54g Microsoft adapter (which is cheaper at Play.com btw (http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/719752/Official-Xbox-360-Wireless-Network-Adapter/Product.html)).

Ardemax
17-02-2010, 04:34 PM
ok ill buy that one from play lol

FNXXXXX :D

edit: a new one is 50£??????????? :[[[[[[[[[[[[
