US hacker who gained notoriety for unlocking Apple's iPhone as a teenager has told BBC News that he has now hacked Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3).
George Hotz said the hack, which could allow people to run pirated games or homemade software, took him five weeks. He said he was still refining the technique but intended to post full details online soon. The PS3 is the only games console that has not been hacked, despite being on the market for three years.
"It's supposed to be unhackable - but nothing is unhackable," Mr Hotz told BBC News.Amazing, I don't know how he keeps pulling stuff like this off at such an early age. Must be big news as its made it to the main page of the BBC news website.
Thoughts?

Somehow I doubt people are going to be jumping to perform this hack judging by the picture of his PS3 in the article :P

Very intelligent guy.

Haha I saw that. He's already stated (I think, I think its on the BBC link) that its all software related, nothing hardware. (correct me If I'm wrong). He is very trustworthy though, some of the stuff he does for the iPhone community is astonishing.
If so It's been long overdue, maybe someone will be able to bring Homebrew from the PSP to PS3?

Has it actually been "confirmed" though, according to that he contacted the BBC so it could be a bunch of lies.

He said that he was not yet ready to reveal the full details of the hack but said that it was "5% hardware and 95% software".

Nah, he's not a fantasist. He's very capable, as I've already mentioned he has done loads for the iPhone community, mainly unlocking the iPhones to all platforms.

Not been released, not been confirmed, till then, it's unhackable.

Very true. :P
Would be nice, if the platform did get opened up a bit more it would make my PS3 a little bit more interesting. :)

I want him as my little tech boy.
'GEORGE my ps3 is overheating. YES SIR'
The hack involves hardware and software
involves both

Ah yeah, 5% hardware (95% software) he says.

If he has been doing this for so long and they know so much about him.. why isn't it an illegal offence for him to hack these things?
Why hasn't he had charges pressed against him by Apple / Sony.. or don't they care.. or is there no law?

because theyve tried, but once you buy something, its yours, and you can do whatever you want to it
its not like hacking computers and getting personal documents. he now owns the hardware
StefanWolves

Because its not actually against the law. (In the PS3 case anyway), because he hasn't actually yet ran any illegal software on it/played any pirated game on it (I think I'm rite their).
Which is why he states that ''he does not intend to be involved in the pirating of game'' etc.

Hmm, but it's not really hacking into their property though, he is doing it to his own property at his own risk, and then posting on how to do it, and then the users do it themselves to their own property. It's like me robbing my own shop, then posting a tutorial for other people on how to rob their own shop.. They are doing it to themselves, not anyone else. Sorry, that was a really bad example, but that is kind of how I see it.

No tbh that is a perfect example.

Tbh I've only had my PS3 a month but I'm still in awe of how versatile it is, I can't really think of anything I'd want to put on there except maybe megadrive emulation cos I'm a megadrive fanboy. What sort of things are they aiming to do with it?

Same, its an amazing machine.
I think there aim is to eventually get emulators onto it and then make it able to play pirated PS3 games.
iirc he was 16 at time of hacking the iphone and is now 19 , it took him a year and a half to hack it, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software. This hack allows GEORGE to view the Hypervisor code and allow himself to modify it how he pleases (HV is what controls what and what not to allow to run e.g. The jtag hack for the 360 does the exact same thing)
Hypervisor code INSERT HERE
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NJ4JFBfr1tY/S1ufqZiXH8I/AAAAAAAAAbY/k2qztNwQhy4/s1600/hvcalls.PNG
Plus Stefan from what i have heard, all GEORGE wants to be able to do is run homebrew
StefanWolves

Homebrew would be fine. But if he releases this the amount of things that could be done is, endless...

After skimming the thread, don't think anyone has brought this up, but if he's openly doing this and publishing the information, surely Apple and/or Sony would take him down before he managed to get that far? :S

Na, most of it is hardware related, which would mean change in the production lane. Nothing can be done against him legally.

Obviously not read properly ;l
he's bought it and can do what've wants to the stuff. He's able to publish what he wants as it's freedom of speech and not pirating. People can then do the same. It becomes illegal when you publish illegal software that people have created ie, games.

Thanks, but how exactly is it obvious? :/ I'm pretty sure you don't wanna go down this road Josh with all your rubbish in threads like the Avatar one

and what I meant was that you obviously hadn't skimmed the thread since like the whole of page 2 is on what you said

Wow, post the same link multiple times so you look even more clever. TOO BAD THAT'S NOT EVEN FROM THE FIRST PAGE!!!! Like I said, please try harder.

One post = whole of a page? :S The reason I said I skimmed the thread in the first place was to allow for any possibly instances where I'd missed some information. SO EXCUUUUUUUUUSE ME.
And if it depends how many posts you have per page, then such a statement shouldn't be made unless you're going to assume the user you're speaking to has the default amount of posts per page (like me).
Oommgg it was meant as a joking reference..
What I meant by the whole of page 2 was that it was asked, and then people responded to it
and the amount of posts per page was actually directed at blinger, and was backing u up, rather than him

Lol fair enough. My comment about the posts per page was deflected to him because he was the one who initially claimed there were posts all over the first page.
Anyway, I just didn't think they'd be too happy with him publishing such information and usually big companies get their way with little individuals. Good on him though if he's able to do all this at a young age :).
Edit: Shane, please get a grip.

Can we get back on topic please. Otherwise this thread may be closed.
I laugh at people in this thread "it's unhackable until he proves it" I mean really? Are you seriously suggesting that the PS3 has absolutely no security flaws? That's like saying it's impossible to just walk into the White House, oh wait..?
It's hackable, everything is hackable, you just need to know how, I'm sure even if this kid hasn't hacked it, someone will.
It was always inevitable, every system is built with barriers to stop hacking, but rules are meant to be broken.

Well, he's released the exploit for people to use and develop maybe a homebrew for the PS3. Just a matter of time now, I give it a month.

Tbh, thats VERY good. put down a few fanboys..
That guy man.. its impressive.
Tbh - Its HIS property, as long as hes doing nothing ILLEGAL and abusing it - then its not that bad..
I mean. Homebrew - Ok, Pirated games (which he said he istn going to participate in) Then thats bad..
If i was sony/apple i'd hire him for things like that.. Im sure that would go down well!
True, I'm suprised no one has employed him to help wrote security software lol.
