View Full Version : Some suggestions: Youtube embedded on forum & new emoticons
These will have already been suggested buttt...
Youtube Links
Many links are youtube links on this forum. I'm not sure what the reason is behind not wanting to put them in, but there are some places where it should be at least enabled to embed videos. The Music forum for instance. Many threads have youtube links and its annoying having to navigate away from this site (and also, keeps traffic on this site). Another place is spam because, well, its spam. Its not needed anywhere else really so just these two places would be cool. It wouldnt drain forum resources, and is hardly a bad addition. In fact, ive seen this suggested many times (just cant remember the reason why.
NEW EMOTICONS!!
I go on a well known student forum from time to time and see so many different images! Theyre vastly funnier than ours. can we please have some additions please. Here are some:
http://static.thestudentroom.co.uk/images/smilies/lolwut.gif
http://static.thestudentroom.co.uk/images/smilies/mmm.gif
http://static.thestudentroom.co.uk/images/smilies/nooo.gif
http://static.thestudentroom.co.uk/images/smilies/dance.gif
http://static.thestudentroom.co.uk/images/smilies/cry2.gif

http://static.thestudentroom.co.uk/images/smilies/troll.gif
http://static.thestudentroom.co.uk/images/smilies/zomg.gif
thats just some of them. Any other suggestions?
Also, i dislike this roll eyes one  it indicates annoyance when it sometimes means cheekiness..
anyway, that is all :)

Interesting suggestions :D
I personally like the youtube one however I think General Management have reasons behind not wanting this to be implemented (I may be wrong, but that was the decision made last time).
In terms of new emoticons I will talk with Garion and try and find some attractive new emoticons which will look nice on the new skins.
Thanks for the suggestions :D
i wish i knew the reason :'(
but in regards to emoticons, i cant see it taking up too much space on a server anyway, but also, how many times are the furni ones actually used? I mean i rarely see it used, maybe because i dont venture into the rare forums :P habbos not my thing

I think the furni ones are used a lot in rare values reports. We have no issues with adding new emoticons and I've been talking to Garion, we are interested in having our own unique emoticons created, but we'd like them to look super awesome on our new VB4 skins which are coming very soon.
omg, id be interested in doing some, so long as i get to see the new super awesome VB4 skins so i can er... know what to make them look like and not just so i can see them before everyone else does.. ;D

Garion and I are gonna discuss it at the weekend when we have less work (I have an exam tomorrow for instance:P)
I presume you will see the skins before we need emoticons, as the skins are coming very very soon.
Also i've found these for you:
http://www.habboxforum.com/showpost.php?p=5126886&postcount=19
http://www.habboxforum.com/showpost.php?p=6075804&postcount=78
Which shows the answer this time may not be a no, as I couldn't find a Jin response and Sammeth's posts seemed quite on the fence, so if a lot of people want this and Jin & Sam are willing to consider it, it's possible it'll get put through this time, but I doubt it if it hasn't met approval before :P
hawwwt whens vb4 gonna be installed?! you best give me insider info ;l
shall i create a poll? Actually, can you edit this to add a poll? and change the thread title or something,
Question:
Should youtube embedding be available in the music and spam forum?

Added, although, remember: a poll doesn't mean everything.
We need words from Sammeth and Jin too ;)
oh i know, :P, it was just that in the links you gave, nvr mentioned saying he cant see a majority, only 2 people more that wanted it, and you mentioned if loads of people wanted it then it may be considered. anyway, thanks :)

youtube embedding would be cool. If it wasn't allowed in signatures, didn't auto play, and there was a disable youtube setting in user options that would be awesome (yn)

Voted yes, as I think it would be quite a cool feature. However I strongly agree with David that they certainly shouldn't be autoplay, shouldn't be in signatures, and an option to disable them (if it's possible) would be cool too I guess.
I don't think it would cause any lag, and as mentioned would be a great addition in the music and spam forums, where a lot of links are posted. Loads of forums make use of youtube embedding and it would be nice I guess.
If ever this did happen, the videos would probably have to be quite closely moderated incase of bad content, but hopefully the Moderation team would be up for this. :D
i also agree with David.
Youtube moderates the content anyway, and im not sure but any graphic content and it wont allow you to play it unless you are signed into an account on youtube thats 18+. im not sure on that but i think thats right.

I said No to the thread's poll for the same reasons that are said every other time this question is asked; primarily, it will become annoying when everyone is basically abusing the feature. However I would have voted Yes to the poll quoted below because I think that it is a nice idea to allow it in certain forums.
... Question:
Should youtube embedding be available in the music and spam forum?
Answers:

No

I'm not against revamping the smilies, but I am against just robbing them off MSN. I much prefer unique emoticons such as the ones we currently have (at least they're unique to me as I haven't seen them anywhere else). I also would prefer them to be a set, like the current ones, rather than a random mix and match.
I've been contacted about trying to make a unique set off emoticons. Just quickly copied some msn one I had, as well as ones posted in this thread, cleaned them up and made them match. They look quite alright.
I do plan on making a unique set as well though, if I can lol

YouTube idea has been suggested several times before, always been said no to and I agree, it shouldnt be added.
I like the current emoticons. However, if they were to change, please dont make them all kiddish. Keep them plain and simple, yet good (like the current ones).

They definitely should not auto-play. For users running a daily bandwidth limit, I'm sure they don't want to open a thread with a whole bunch of YouTube videos auto-playing...
Having YouTube videos embedded is a great thing, because it promotes user choice. Having YouTube videos auto-play is not a great thing, because it reduces user choice.

Not sure I'd care for youtube embedding, it can get pretty messy from what I've seen elsewhere. Also obviously you wouldn't want them to autoplay so you'd have to click them anyway, what's the difference then with having links? A lot of videos won't allow embedding remember.
As for emotes, new ones would be nice but not sure if msn style ones would look quite right, guess it all depends on new skins etc

MSN emoticons look dreadful on forums. Best see what the new skins look like before even thinking of emoticons to add (if someone actually bothers installing it soon, loads of forums are using the new version of vb, even when it isn't the full release :/)

I quite like our current smilies. Nevertheless, Oli and I are open to suggestions - rather than ruling something out altogether, it's quite nice to have a look see and decide whether or not we think it will work. I don't like turning around and just saying no based on personal opinion rather than at least experimenting first.

Well against changing smilies for the sake of change. By all means add another set but the ones we have atm are the hxf smilies they should stay that way. If we change them for the sake of newness we'll just get bored of the new ones and we'll be back to square 1. New smilies could be cool but keep defaults.
Unless you want like different smilies on each skin. That could be cool, like space themed smilies for space skin etc. Don't know if thats possible but yknow

I'd like to see youtube embedded, I think it's just a nice little feature to be able to use, if needed. If it's abused, the moderation department can swoop down on it and then let the majority rule-abiding members use it for their own reasons.
As for emoticons, I normally use the standard :) :D :P :( (sometimes the wall and the whistle) so I wouldn't be bothered either way about new ones!

Reckon you could give a possible, believable, viable reason why you wouldnt like them implemented? I mean, so far, it does appear like its 2:1 which is a fair majority. Its like, i dont want this to come off badly lol, but its like a dictatorship by saying i dont like it so youre not getting it. if that makes sense?
Im not trying to make it sound rude either D:

I didnt suggest we wouldnt get it, I just said I would hate to see youtube embedding being implemented, purely because its messy, it makes things a tad more laggier, its more work for our moderators, it will get misused, I don't see why a link is so hard, it seems like a lot of mess just to avoid a click. Its not just up to me, we have forum managers for a reason. Regardless, Habbox isn't a democracy and never will be.

omg you sound well mardy :( i told you i didnt mean it like that! :P
you said I, but you also said, if we can help it, which i dunno, just puts another thought in my head lol.
it makes things a tad more laggier
it makes it a millisecond slower, you wouldnt even notice. No strain is put on the server as its hosted on youtube, it just fetches the player which, once its fetched it once, it doesnt need to again. But also, if its possible, a switch off button would make it so people can choose whether it loads it or not, or just puts a link there
its more work for our moderators
its what they are there for surely? But anyway, like i said before, any graphic content on youtube is taken off straight away, and any adult content such as gore requires you to be logged on to see it. as i said before also, im not too sure if thats true, but i dont see why it wouldnt be. (plus, how many links are posted to bad things on youtube at the minute anyway? i havnt seen any?)
it will get misused
Misuse would be in spam forum, which is what its there for. any misuse would just result in a pointless post in any other forum, and would be dealt with how it normally would be, which, they might have just posted 'fgdsuignfdo' rather than 'www.youtube.com/v/dfsafd', if that makes sense? Not only that, but i still think that it should possibly only get allowed in the music and spam forum anyway, if that is possible
I don't see why a link is so hard, it seems like a lot of mess just to avoid a click.
since the removal of VIP, i suppose hxf has had to rely on reserves and its owners own money. Navigating away from a website means that it gets less traffic, and thus can charge less. Not only that, but if there was an ad on youtube, and theyd navigated away, that revenue couldve been hxf's

And it won't even avoid the click because you will still have to press play init. Also whoever mentioned traffic; it won't affect traffic because links open in a new window anyway.
The only existing smilies that I think look good are the ones ClubHabbo (and now HabboForum) use and I don't expect any custom made ones to be anything special (I even had a go at some last night because I was bored but I doubt there's any point even showing them). I'd rather just keep the current ones because at least within the fansite circle they're unique and everyone's used to them.

A millisecond per video soon adds up. You'll no doubt get people posting multiple videos in one post which will snowball and become several videos in one page of a thread. As for that last point, I thought the whole point was to move away from just posting links?
... its what they are there for surely? I think there are exceptions to what gets restricted by YouTube because I recently posted a link to a video in Spam and it turned out the video was unsuitable because of something I didn't spot due to the quality of it and it wasn't the main focus of the video. ANYWAY my point is that Habbox is a lot stricter than other websites so you can't rely on third parties to apply restrictions to suit Habbox.

While the misuse thing is still a valid point, I am a fan of the idea concerning just Spam and Music. Although surely this would have to be extended to TV & Film and Sports? They all have as much right to it but then we're back at square one - which is having it pretty much everywhere on the forum.
... since the removal of VIP, i suppose hxf has had to rely on reserves and its owners own money. Navigating away from a website means that it gets less traffic, and thus can charge less. Not only that, but if there was an ad on youtube, and theyd navigated away, that revenue couldve been hxf's ...
Like I said, links on Habbox Forum open in new windows so as long as Habbox remains open in the background it has no effect on traffic. I would imagine that at least 98% of the time, people click YouTube links, watch the video then carry on browsing the forum. So this issue doesn't arise.
... i know, which is why it had started to go downhill, as the managers and staff never listened.
Just because they're not jumping at this request, doesn't mean they aren't listening. They must consider points of view from both sides.

depending on how many posts people have on their page, of course it would hadd up. but, since most have 10 as its the default, and if you restricted it to even 3 per post, thats only 30 milliseconds (btw, its probably less than a millisecond anyway) so its not even half a second longer. Thats of course if everyone posted them. The whole point is so its more convenient for people. If people dont want them to load, then thats their own view, and can do it how they want

depending on what got posted, normally when people link to other sites with graphic content, they put a warning in. The same thing could be applied. If its missed, then theyll get a warning, simple as. Its just like moderating it normally by having to click the link (and in this case, it saves moderators time by not clicking the link and viewing it on the forum)
While the misuse thing is still a valid point, I am a fan of the idea concerning just Spam and Music. Although surely this would have to be extended to TV & Film and Sports? They all have as much right to it but then we're back at square one - which is having it pretty much everywhere on the forum.
I would also suggest it should be at least extended to TV and Film, and possibly sports. thats only 5 out of the many different forums on here. Im not sure how many there are, but you would never need it for discuss anything, etc. News would normally use BBC and stuff so it wouldnt be necessary there
Like I said, links on Habbox Forum open in new windows so as long as Habbox remains open in the background it has no effect on traffic. I would imagine that at least 98% of the time, people click YouTube links, watch the video then carry on browsing the forum. So this issue doesn't arise.
Its not a big deal about the traffic, it was just a passing comment. But if those users did stay on youtube, and they had the same links (ads) that we had, then theyd get the revenue rather than us. Not a big deal or anything, but y'know, everything makes the difference :P
Just because they're not jumping at this request, doesn't mean they aren't listening. They must consider points of view from both sides.
It was more in reference to the previous years more than anything now. Lots of things are considered now due to them wanting to get the forum more active, and managers that actually talk to the users and respond to feedback :)

The amount of lag also depends on what equipment/connections people are using so even if it seems OK for you and me it might have a worse effect on other people, but I don't know, maybe if it was trialled we could see.
If it's only in certain sections, you will inevitably get regular feedback threads demanding for it to be expanded to other sections such as Discuss Anything and Current Affairs as they arguably have as much need for it as anywhere else.
Your comment about adverts is valid but unless I'm being naive, (:P) I doubt many people click the advertisement banners at the top of the forum anyway.
I'll reply properly in the morning or something but, I clickthem sometimes :P like if it's one of those weird games, I click it to see if the sites hilariously bad :P

It seems illogical to edit the core vB files to remove a feature when upgrading. You would have to do so for each subsequent update/ version.
I think at the very least it should be trialled - rather than simply removing it immediately.

I think if we do get this feature then we will be waiting on VB4, and then reviewing whether or not we should be implementing it.
so despite it being a 2:1 majority, (even though the main thing was that it was meant to be in just music and spam (maybe tv now too tho) in which case theres more than a 2:1) you still might not implement it?
and unless vb4 is literally coming in like 1-2 weeks, i fail to see why it cant be turned on, i mean, it takes a very little amount of time i thought..

One poll isnt going to make a decision for us, we aren't yes men just sayign yes to absolutely everything. How many people have voted, like 30? We make the decisions based on a lot of things, of course we take into account what the public want us to do and all that, but its not going to be the be all end all that makes the decision for us. So yeah, even though its a 2:1 majority, we still might not implement it.
VB4 should be coming this month which only has 3 weeks left in it anyway.

i know youre not yes men, im jsut saying that in pretty much standard politics, its known that a majority vote pretty much means that you should implement it. Yes, theres 30 people that voted, but thats because people either dont really care (in which case, dont know or yes as people would have voted no if they didnt want it) or they havnt seen the thread. Its clear that its like 10% public, 90% management. That was made clear in the other thread with the big disclaimer at the bottom...
Still, 3 weeks is a long time, and it will probably have been forgotten by then anyway, unless it comes as standard and it cant be removed, in which case, win.

Its clear that its like 10% public, 90% management. That was made clear in the other thread with the big disclaimer at the bottom...
Still, 3 weeks is a long time, and it will probably have been forgotten by then anyway, unless it comes as standard and it cant be removed, in which case, win.
Its pretty much standard politics that if theres a majority vote on something it should be implemented when the politician themself holds the referendum. If we had decided to hold a poll to gain public opinion on it, then thats more comparable toso called standard politics. I can't walk into my local council and say "I just made a poll and we all think that you should give this school a grant for such a reason" and expect them to implement it.
It won't be forgotten theres a lot of things we have to look for, and Im sure with the vast amount of members they wont let us forget. Obviously if it is forgotten by members, I think it says a lot about whether or not they really care anyway.

so despite it being a 2:1 majority, (even though the main thing was that it was meant to be in just music and spam (maybe tv now too tho) in which case theres more than a 2:1) you still might not implement it?
and unless vb4 is literally coming in like 1-2 weeks, i fail to see why it cant be turned on, i mean, it takes a very little amount of time i thought..
41 people is hardly a reliable sample of the population. Even if a hundred people voted on the poll, it still wouldn't be a reliable source of data unless ALL the criticisms that have been raised were included in the OP to ensure they fully understand what they are voting for. Anyway as Sam says, there are lots of other things that must be considered.
Maybe you should read the post that I'd made after sam had said this same thing. If people havnt voted, they obviously don't care enough to try and stop this from happening. If you don't want something, you'd vote. And actually, how many people actually use the forum a day anyway? As in actively who would actually see regular use of YouTube embedding? Probably less than 100 anyway..
What other things are there to consider? New rules? Not really, considering the same rules would apply when posting a link to the YouTube video. Which is why it's no extra work for moderators as they will have to watch the video anyway.
