this is actually ******* me right off now.

Can we PLEASE have a wildcard on ***** cause its just got me like two warnings/infractions and its so ergh :@

cus i ALWAYS add letters onto my words in spam, its how i type so i cant help it!?! but like if there was a wildcard on ***** then it'll be so much easier!

I edited my post as you posted.

Pretty much i seem to be targetted for getting "*****" written cause i alwayyss add letters onto my words, like "lmfaoo" and "loool" and "jennn" ect. well, its just how i type, but the filter wont pick up on it cause it has "ooo" on where as if the filter had a wildcard then it would filter "lmfaooo" as well as "*****"

IF I GET WARNED FOR THIS POST, ALKAZ GETS IT.

You're not being targetted at all.

The abbreviation you mentioned IS currently filtered, and so therefore adding extra letters to it will be classed as avoiding the filter.

This applies to all members and not just you.

Yes, it could be debatable as to whether it should be filtered, but it currently is, and moderators work with what they are given. If a word is filtered and someone adds letters to it, or gets around the filter somehow then it will be classed as avoiding the filter.

Alkaz
11-02-2010, 11:41 PM
Er, would probably be best for the moment not to add the 'ooo' and 'nnn''s on to everything then lol.

Exactly my point why a wildcard should be added.. And i didnt mean being targetted, more of a it's how i type, thus i'll forever get attacked for it.

to be honest, why are they filtered anyway? I dont know how to word this lol

like, if i were to say lmfa0 (sorry, but people wont know what im on about otherwise), people who dont mind swearing will know what it says, and others who dont wont care? Its not like youve actually written the word. :S thats a really bad way of explaining but y'know lol

Habbo is aimed at teens aged 11+ and as this is a Habbo fansite then them same kind of people will be visiting the site too. If we allowed people to post them abbreviations then younger members will be like ''what does ***** mean'' and it will encourage swearing and more avoiding the filter and it just creates more hassle for everyone. I mean some people say they want the swear word for emphasis but you can always say it like THIS!

kk.
12-02-2010, 01:44 AM
Is there an option to be able to turn the filter on and off for different users? Like how habbo have it? Maybe if you join a group or something? Faaar better, then you don't even need to moderate it

Alkaz
12-02-2010, 01:48 AM
It would still need to be moderated for people avoiding the filter who have selected to have it off then if when they are infracted or what ever should be the appropriate warning they could easily change it to allow filtered words to show, causing hassle. Also, just the hassle to moderators having to check (if possible) if people have the filter on/off etc. I, myself can't see it happening.

kk.
12-02-2010, 01:57 AM
Oh yh, good point about avoiding it. But I'd expect less would try and avoid it if that makes sense. And I'm not too sure what you mean by the last point. Simply, if you're in the group, the filters lifted, if not, the *s show up, simple

However those posts should be reported by those who have the filter on if they're insulted by the language - if they don't report it they can't care that much.

Fairly sure it's easy enough not to swear, most people manage it fine and it's only occasionally a minor annoyance

As for wildcards on filters, it seems a good idea in theory but those who were on Habbo before they took the filter off (as is basically the case; no-one keeps it on as far as I know) you'd get random Bobbas in the middle of perfectly innocent sentences because the wildcarding on the filter got confused, commonly when I was trying to cyber with little boys and couldn't say 13/f/uk when asked my asl which was quite annoying

Personally I agree that it should be removed from the filter altogether. Perhaps it is something we could discuss :). Nevertheless, we will not retrospectively remove your infraction on that basis (should we choose to remove it, which I should stress is not at all guaranteed) as your infraction is fair.

Fair enough, however i strongly disagree that "lmfao" should be filtered, as i could give a million reasons to unfilter it.

I know what your saying but we all know what the F means and swear words are filtered so why would that be unfilted because its not the actual word, if you was to say 'f off' then its not saying the word but its still a swear word and would be avoiding the filter etc.

But thats clear your trying to tell someone to f off, where as lmfao is simply laughing, and not telling anyone to get lost ect. Its a harmless word which cannot be taken in the wrong way at all.

See Garion on our views in it in the filter.

However we won't be adding the wildcards for reasons stated by FlyingJesus, they can appear in random sentences and break up words that are actually no problem.

You wouldnt need to do wildcards if it got unfiltered, plus certain words such as ***** when filtered and added wildcard, wouldnt break sentances up as you cant use "*****" in a word other then itself/adding extra' words onto.

Both fair statements :(

Saying that certain filtered words aren't used to insult people is kinda redundant though, as any cussing can be done without being aimed at people but it's still deemed unnecessary and out of place on a forum such as this. If I made a thread telling everyone what an f'ing good w I just had it wouldn't be an insult to anyone, but I'm sure people could easily find it offensive (especially if I added pics mmm)

The reason lmfao etc are filtered is because of the F which we all know what it means. Saying that word is filtered and if you say ***** it has a swear word in it, so we would also have to unfilter the F word too as in typical Habboxforum fashion, people would moan so its just less hassle to leave it.

Two points.

Once again, it seems like a dictatorship. Its like the poll all over again. Because management dont want it, it will not get changed.

Secondly, habbo had it filtered for however long but they changed it. We've had rules on this forum that havnt changed for however long, and they've been changed. I see no reason as to why it cant be

Not without modifying code which then means it has to be updated for each vB version and then doing that still doesn't avoid filter avoidance because if you avoid it for someone who has the filter enabled it's still worth a pm/warning/infraction.

So it solves nothing and wont work.

kk.
12-02-2010, 05:27 PM
i wasnt getting on about how its not going to be needed to be moderated, i was merely asking if that was an option. It would actually solve a reasonable amount of things. People saying that we dont need lm*ao or wt* etc wont need to moan anymore.

Its more of a case that the older members who dont care about swearing can turn it on or off, like how habbo have it.

Was merely a suggestion

Optional filter is pretty much having no filter, I don't imagine anyone would bother keeping it on because they wouldn't be able to see half the things all the cool kids are saying. Also with a forum it's a far more permanent message - on Habbo it's gone in a few seconds and doesn't ruin the look of a place for long. I have nothing against swearing in principle and do it plenty in the real world (mostly when driving or playing pro evo) but I don't see it as being at all necessary here when things seem to work fine without it.

Here we go with the political systems comparisons again.

Habbox is a dictatorship, you didn't elect the leaders and they can do whatever they want. Get over it.

I'm fully with Tom, there's nothing wrong with swearing and I do it enough irl but I don't want to see it plastered all over here forever. Even in the form of abbreviations because you still read the abbreviation out loud in your head kinda (well I do anyway).

Lmfao is hardly the biggest swear word.

Doesn't matter whether its the biggest swear word or not, its just unnecessary.

Btw if you wanna avoid the filter in this thread highlight a letter in the word and change the size to 2, looks far more elegant ;)

The Professor

Pmsl, rofl and lmao all give more effect than lmao. I don't find lmfao to be all that more effective than rofl or pmsl anyway, in fact I find pmsl carries more emphasis than any abbreviation using swear words. But its by the by, its avoiding the filter and we have a filter for a reason.

i was the one that mentioned it last time..

I mention it because do you think the inhabitants of china like the way their country is ran? They need to realise that they should listen to what members want rather than deciding that because they dont want it, theyre not going to implement it. To generate more people coming to the forum, and more staying, they should at least consider the ideas, rather than outright dismissing them. If the majority of the forum would like something, but the management dont, it is more than likely it wont be given. I myself, dont really care either way, because its got to the point on this forum where i will be leaving, and soon.
