View Full Version : Premier League to introduce qualifying spot for UCL Number 4 spot!

Heard it on SSN.

Apparently, the PL are on about introducing a scheme where the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th spot will have to qualify for the Champions League.

I, personally, find it quite alright! You would get the likes on City, Aston Villa and maybe Everton in there.

Most premier league clubs approve of this idea, apart from the top 4 atm!

Thoughts?

What the hell you on about? More like the way to save Liverpools arse.

The system is bent. For the past ten (ish) years it's always been the top four automatic, now Liverpool are slipping they change the system. I would have welcomed it at the start of the Prem but why hasn't it been introduced before? Bent as.

terrible idea. to get 7th is not a big achievementm and the the possibility of getting champions league is redic.

7th = UEFA Cup depending on cup winners anyway.

haha i love it, makes the whole idea of the top 4 less dominating.

Suppose its a good idea due to the fact its so hard to break into the top four your either fighting relegation or playing for a posistion. Gives you more to play for i guess.

I agree with you above.

So mixed opinions...

I'd rather it just stayed as it is. I guess it doesn't really make a difference because the lower qualifiers probably wouldn't get far anyway

38 games should be enough.

This is ridiculous. The Europa spots are fine!

if 5th, 6th or 7th get in they probably won't do very well. that could well make england lose a spot.

Joke of an idea. You're telling me if Fulham next season finish 7th, and somehow win the playoffs they will get far in the CL? 4th place have to qualify for the group stages anyway and I can't see Fulham or even Everton/Villa/Spurs beating a team like Valencia, Sevilla, Juventus and they won't even get into the group stages. To be honest if you finish 7th you don't deserve to play CL football and same goes with 6th or 5th place. The only thing that I think would be fair would be if 4th and 5th place finish on equal points then they play each other over a two legged tie but apart from that i'd say leave it as it is.

I seriously hope this doesn't happen.. like people have said teams at 6-7 are not going to get very far and really it's embarrassing. If you get 4th you deserve to be there, any lower than that and you don't, simple as. Doesn't matter who you are.

It would open it up more, and would make it a lot more exciting. But what would happen to the Europe League spots? Would it be the loser of the Play-Offs that got the Europa League?

I like how all the 'Top 4' clubs are moaning and throwing the toys out of the pram, fact is, the League is starting to get repetitive, something needs to be changed, and I'd welcome this change.

But saying that, it won't happen, ever. :P

if you're gonna spice it up spice the league up. chuck the super league format in.

at the end of the day though, wherever you finish you deserve to be, you shouldn't lose a spot in the champions league or the title because of one or two games. it's over a season not one of two games.

Why is it only the Prem anyway? Surely it would be unfair on foreign leagues which only get the top 4? :S

No, it's up to each association to decide how they award the European places. Like said though, if lower teams (ala Fulham) get into the Champions League and epically fail (like they probably will do) it will lower the English coefficiants therefore, eventually, giving us less places in the Champions League in the future thus getting rid of 4th place Champions League spot altogether.

Premier League = shooting themselves in the foot.

The FA only need 14 clubs to agree to make this go through, so it might actually come true. :O

i can see a lot of lower teams voting in favour tbh.

wouldn't surprise me if the top 4 said **** you all and played in some super league.

even david moyes said it shouldn't happen.

Super League? you mean as win the top 4 from all the top European Leagues playing each other in a separate league week in week out? it wouldn't surprise me, Real Madrid are already trying to push it through.

14.

Arsenal, Liverpool, United, Chelsea, Everton are all against so far I think.

2 more out of 15 and it won't happen so that's not too bad.

I think the Birmingham manager said that it shouldn't happen although I might just be making that up I can't remember.

O'Neil supports it

O'Neil, Redknapp and Mancini will all support it I'm guessing. Rafa probably won't but then again I'm not too sure and as for the rest well who knows but to be honest, this is just making the Europa League less and less important and a pointless cup.

yes, exactly what I meant.

the fact that O'Neill and whoever supports it shows what ambition their clubs obviously have. they both have the basis to brek into the top 4 but they'd rather not work a bit get a better team and go all out to get it.

But to get a better team, we have to get top 4 otherwise no "better" players than we already have will even consider joining us.

To be honest look at us. How many of our players came to the team for CL football? Hardly any. Most were bought as unknowns and on the cheap and brought up and trained to form the team we have today. There is absolutely nothing stopping Villa, Spurs and Everton doing the exact same thing and all 3 have actually done that to a large extent. All those teams need is a little bit more and they will have the team for a top 4 place, but if you can't get that place over a 38 game period, then you don't deserve it. End of.

Well you know, we would but we got knocked out in the first round :P

Arsene Wenger is good with kids though. We may break the top 4, but we don't have the calibre type of player to beat teams like valencia in the qualifying round.
