today when I went into form and I found out something terrible. someone had broke into our music classroom and stole 10 of the apple macs 3 was left when I went into music. everyone's GCSE projects were on there which will effect there overall grade in music. I feel sorry for the yr 11/10/9s because all there hard work was taken in a couple of minutes !

Odd, normally the work is stored on network drives which is then located in the servers elsewhere in the school buildings. I find it very strange that they just stored the work on the actual Mac's.

yeah, people should always backup their work. so even though all of those macs being stolen is incredibly bad and unlucky, people have to take responsibility for their own work to avoid any situations which may lead to work being lost.

actually yeah matt is right. why was their work saved on the actual macs and not the network/server w.e :S

tbh i'm not to sure if the saved there work somewhere eles but it still is a great shame if they didn't also to us cause we dont get to have fun on them :P lol but yeah very annoying in music since we were ment to be using the macs
the macs in the music room are under clair hill (music teach) KS3 and KS4 not our own personal log in

When I was at Sixth Form our computer room in the sixth form block had bars on the windows (most computer rooms did to stop people from stealing things).

But then the silly noobs put laptops in there instead of computers.

So theives came one night, smashed the windows and just lifted the laptops through the bars.

Time to improve security if that ever did happen.

My school has all of the 6 computer rooms covered with this thing on the ceiling where if the door opens or the windows open the alarm sounds and the things on the ceiling squirt smart water onto everything that would be in the room, so they would be covered in it which doesnt go for like 3 weeks and all the computers are marked with special stuff the police use so if they have a report of someone selling these they can quickly look for the markings.

Shame about your school though...

How do you do a music lesson on a computer? Sorry if i sound rather ridiculous but it sounds more like a facebook lesson.

Shame about the computers being stolen, hopefully the school had backups.

I'm not quite sure how it works lol, they told us about it in an assembly ages ago, when it first got installed because someone stole our aple macs lol, but they said the water would defiently hit anyone who was in there...

I thought smart water was manually placed on equipment with special pens and had identification numbers. Not a sprinkler type intrusion fluid? I think they were trying to scare people of with that information.

My school has aple macs for music, I don't take music but i know that you can plug in instruments to the aple macs so it makes it easy to upload a bands work onto the computer and also it comes with something called garage band or something which is a good program for music.

I think i got confused lol, the smart water is the tracking thing on the computers so the police know if someone is selling it. and the thing on the ceiling i don't know what thats called lol, but i think it is ink maybe? i dunno lol but they said it wont come off the person for atlest 2-3 weeks.

You go on garage band which is like loops and you can record using the pianos attached to them

I've never seen a Mac in any education vacuity here. The entire school board uses the exact same computers from 2003, 800mhz 256mb ram Windows XP computers with CRT monitors. Nobody would bother to steal those :P

My schools brand new, only built last year so yeh, we are quite lucky cos we have loads of cool equipment and the latest things and stuff.

And not ALL our computers are Macs but around 30% of the school computers are Macs. ;)

Smart water is sprayed. Banks, jewellers etc use it in vaults, usually with a few second delay so anyone walking inside while the alarm is going gets the full impact :) Alot of burglaries are solved using this, but you have to find the people who have it sprayed onto them, as it cannot be traced in real time, but each spray water utilizing area has a unique type of water so it's easily traceable.

My secondary school was ram raided lol. The front into the reception/foyer bit had glass doors. Reversed a van into it and stole the big TV. One time about 3-4 projectors were nicked in one night as well.

If they only took the moniters (screens) then they should be fine. If they took both monitor & tower then you should still be fine, on the basis that your school has its own server or any server for that matter

Guttted.... Thats shocking on the school though, they didnt do ANY BACKUPS?

Thats like the first commandment if youre a IT Technician for any organisation! :o but yeah... bloody shame that, bet its not the first time its happened anywhere either.

I wouldn't even trust the school - especially if there was no backups. I would have had my own work saved on a memory stick.

Isn't that really inconvenient as most people have Windows at home? :S

but yeah once our DT lab got broken into and they took the overhead projector but left like the thousands of pounds worth of easily sellable power tools :/

Hence the reason we get knowledge from windows aswell as macs.

We also have enough computers to each one of the students if everyone wanted one in that time.

At our school we had maybe 15 macs in the photography classes, and because every other computer was windows driven, they didn't bother to setup the mac ones to the windows.

The Macs at my uni allow you to choose which OS (OSX or Vista) you want on start-up :D

We had a Mac room at our school and it wasn't hooked up to the main school sever so to speak. All work saved in that room could only be accessed in that room. Pathetic tech staff.

I imagine this is similar.
