If anyone can tell me how I can accomplish Canada to UK text messaging cheap for both of us (I'm on Bell Mobility she's on Virgin) then I swear on pain of death I will owe you a humongous favour.

Skype text messaging is pretty cheap? It's 13 Canadian cent per text to the UK. For her it'll be 7 British Pence per text to you.

http://www.gosim.com/ is also meant to be okay, it's 55 US Cent per text and none to receive them. It's mainly aimed at large international travellers though.
