Sharon

I wouldn't, no as it's wrong however angry I'd gotten with them. I don't believe in child abuse and never will it's plain wrong and hurtful, not including setting a bad example to your children.

Your views / opinions?

There's a difference between child abuse and giving your child a small slap if they're in hysterics. I wouldn't say slapping your child is a necessary way to discipline them, but very very very occasionally my mum will slap me or my brother (mostly in the past) if we were being very unreasonable or really horrible and I see this as a perfectly ok thing to do. Obviously if you're going around slapping a 3 year old as hard as you can on the cheek it's awful, but tbh I don't think anyone on this forum is a future child abuser.

Yes. It's not child abuse and children need discipline in their life, a firm hand will teach them that.

Its not like I would smack my child when ever it did something wrong but if it did something really wrong then ye I would. It never done me much harm nor has it done 'many' people harm over the last god knows how many hundreds of years.

yeah, what he said. i can't see the problem with standard discipline to show the child what they've done is wrong.

Of course. I got smacked and whipped and spanked when I was younger. Taught me not to do it again.

I will, made me think twice about doing anything bad when I was younger and I bear no physical/mental scars from it.

Definitely. Parents these days are too scared to discipline their children for fear of what will be thought/said of them and look how kids are turning out. I'm not THAT ancient but when I was a toddler it was perfectly acceptable for parents and even very close family friends to give you a little smack if you were being out of line - nothing solid and it definitely wasn't every time you did something wrong, but there is no problem whatsoever with a light tap to show your kids that what they're doing is not allowed.

I think if a child of mine was just about to put his finger into an electrric socket then he would have a smacked hand to get him/her out of danger.
I don't think a small slap on the arms or legs does any harm but nothing that would leave a mark.

yeah, i believe when your child is playing up to extremes/over-acting a situation etc they should be given a slap, not a heavy hand of course but just a little tap wouldn't do damage and would add discipline to a child's lifestyle, i believe kids who aren't ever hit by their parents just grow up to get away with everything tbh.

Yes, small for discipline. Saying that if they're like me in future they won't even need it.

Obviously I will. They are bound to do something that will really piss me off one day and what do they get? A slap.

If your just gonna talk to them "Don't do that please honey" they are just gonna turn around and throw it back in your face. Trust me, I know lots of people who use the "sensitive tone" option, and there children are growing up not giving a damn what their parents say or do.

Just think about it. If you were going to do something, say like get drunk, would you rather be worried about coming home and getting a few slaps or coming home and getting told off and sent to bed and grounded?

I would be more scared about the slapping, that'll make me think twice.

Yes, it teaches disipline and its only since all this liberal nonsense about kids rights came in that kids dont know where the boundary is.

I could never hurt a child. Others or my own..

It really would not matter what they did, I just could never.

It has been proven that children would prefer a slapping compared to a grounding. As a slapping doesn't last anything close to being grounded.

A slap on the hand at the most - and then i'd regret it lol

Yes I would. Parents that just sit back and go 'Aw Lilly please don't do that it's mean, and make mummy sad ok buttercup?' are the reason why we have yobs and idiots in this country. Teach them right or wrog, but sometimes you need to be firm and they will know what not to do and what is acceptable. Mind you in Britain it is pretty much accepted that people go around knives and stab people - and a couple of years in jail.

Exactly. I think we're the same age and my parents didn't have to discipline me very often but if I was being totally out of line then yes I got a little slap on the back of my leg. I don't have any violent tendencies whatsoever and as far as i'm aware bear no mental scars as a result of this. So yeah, if my child was in hysterics or was being a spoilt brat then I may be inclined to give it a tap to snap out of it.

I probably will if they did something which deserved it

06-03-2010, 02:23 PM
no coz theres other forms of punishment, like for example, the naughty area
or grounding when they get older

luce
06-03-2010, 06:51 PM
no not even to discipline them i would just take things they really like off them for a set amount of time- it has more effect :)

A slap on the arse/back of the head and a grounding. 'The naughty step' that I hear people trying to threaten their kids with on the bus/wherever NEVER works.
