a Firewall and Anti-Virus would be useful. Also the Flash, Shockwave and Java plug-ins.

Special

MSN+ Extention
Spybot Search & Destroy
Malwerebytes Anti-Malwere

Anti-virus - Microsoft Security Essentials

I'd also install iTunes, Skype, Google Mail Checker, Foxit Reader (Great PDF Reader, better than Adobe Reader), Paint.NET (Free and decent image editor), VLC (Allows you to view videos no matter what the format), Imgburn (Good for ripping/burning disks), Picasa (Great for managing photos) and Div X.

And some more hardware/peripheral specific software.

Hasn't Norton got better? Even so I still wouldn't use it due to past experience! :P

I use Kapersky personally. I did use McAffee when I had it on-trial after I brought the computer. They are both quite good.

Norton isn't as bad as it used to be, still not ideal though

NOD32 rofl.

Oh and, all anti viruses cant stop you getting hacked anyways. Seeing many kiddies create new stubs each week.

Just put the stuff on it you actually use? You obviously don't use the application if you need to get someone to suggest that application for you to install :P

I don't understand this thread. Why would you buy a computer and then ask us what to do with it?

I find EASEUS partition manager helpful to have on the computer. CCleaner and Advanced Systemcare are pretty good for system maintenece. Mp3tag for editing id3 tags on your music if they're messed up.

And Peggle is a must have :P

My advice would be to ignore this thread and only download stuff that you actually need, for example "oh I need to put songs on my ipod" thats the stage were you'd download it. You don't want a load of useless crap that you'd rarely use.

K-Lite codec pack is a good idea, that together with VLC and you should be sorted for video

Why not office 2010 RTM?

Why not office 2010 RTM?

I might be wrong, but isn't the RTM version (which if I'm right is similar to an RC version) time limited, whereas a beta has none?

Stephen!

An RTM (Release to Manufacturer) is the final version that will eventually end up on the shelves.

Agreed, and don't install anything else. Crap will slow your new computer right down to utter failure.

Tomm

The only problem with the supposed RTM leak is that the only reference to it being the RTM is a section of the EULA that contains the text "RTM". It is highly likely that this is not the actual RTM build but a RTM-Escrow build (i.e features locked, only critical bugs will be fixed) that will not be released as the final RTM build.

FrostWire and Utorrent... Also doesn't every man need a little bit of adult content on their HDD.

avast! free anti virus is pretty sick, don't know many people who use it but I find it actually really good...

it would help if you gave us a bit of information on the spec's of your pc, because it might be total crap which just about handles an msn conversation of 15 people without crashing.

if you have a decent rig and like to just chill out on your pc get:
- avast! free av
- utorrent
- steam
- crysis
- cod4
- css + cs1.6
- xfire
- ventrilo
- monitor, gfx card, motherboard drivers/utilities
- atitool oc utility

then you're sorted, i really couldn't be arsed with all this PDFViewer and VisualBasics for geeks.

Why not office 2010 RTM?

No point when it's uncertain if it is actually RTM or not, for now I'll just stick with the BETA MS posted up on their site.
