Hey, well i've had this Canon EOS300 SLR - 35mm Film (ahaha) For ages..

And i was looking at buying a DSLR body.

Now, i have a 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 LDO lens - Quantaray - It IS autofocus

So, would this work with a Newer DSLR body?

Yes, it should work fine as it uses the EF mount which is still used on all Canon DSLRs to this date (Some might be EF-S but the only difference is that it can fit the EF-S mounts designed for smaller sensor size DSLRs in addition to the standard EF mount).

If you don't get a full 35mm sensor size DSLR then you will notice the the image appears cropped or "zoomed" in i.e the 550D/500D/450D/older xxxD models have a crop factor of 1.6 meaning that your lens would be a 112-480mm equivalent on 35mm film/full sized 35mm sensor. Also newer lenses have special coatings on them for mounting to digital cameras that are designed to prevent internal reflections from the shiny surface of the image sensor (film is not reflective like a image sensor in any digital camera) but it should not really be any issue.

Does it HAVE to be a canon?

And is it decent enough lens? With a 35mm DSLR that is..

You don't need a 35mm sized sensor. Rather there can be some advantages to a large focal length EF lens on a smaller size sensor as you are getting more magnification from it. However, the reverse applies to EF lenses where wide angle EF lenses are not as wide angle but this can be remedied with a EF-S wide angle lens that is designed for the smaller sensor sizes.

Although a larger sensor normally results in much less noise, especially at higher ISO ratings therefore, typically, have better image quality.
