I think the 'OS' style sub-forums in Technology Discusion should be abolished. They're starting to die (especially the linux one).
Maybe have Prefixes instead?

Interesting suggestion, let's see what other members of the tech section think :)

I agree, hardly ever any posts in those sub-forums

Agreed. Unfortunately there's no longer a need for any of these sections, it would be more beneficial just to have the one Tech forum.

I think the OS's really have to go they're inactive, but the portable devices forum is still quite active so no reason for that to go?

I would also agree to getting to rid of the OS ones (At the very least the Linux one which is yet to get a post during 2010).

I don't tend to look in the sub-forums and I'm getting tired of making threads which are moved into the sub-forums.

Another good point. Less threads will have to be moved by moderators by merging.

Sounds like a reasonable idea. The amount of sub-forums in there remove any reason to post in the main forum - there's only ever threads about making computers, or Tech help. So it sounds like a decent idea. Worth trialing.

I think Apple should remain, it's a bit more active and at the very least keeps the mac/ pc flamewares at bay most of the time. Other than that I agree with removing linux (perhaps merge it with apple so it can be Apple + other OSs) and keeping portable devices.

I like this idea too. I guess the general consensus here is that the Linux forum must die :P

Right so Linux most definitely going.

Keeping Windows & Apple, and all other OS's can be discussed in the main forum.

Does that sound good? Or would rather prefixes?

Obviously all subject to discussion with Garion.

The last Windows section post was three days ago. Perhaps having a [Windows], [OS X] prefix, and then a Portable devices (Phones, iPods and others) section and nothing else would work nicely.

Not a great fan of prefixes.

- Technology Discussion
- - - - Portal Devices
- - - - Apple Devices

I think will work. I still think apple should remain seperate, but windows is already posted in the main tech section anyway and unless they specifically specify windows in their post it's hard to justify moving them.

That would be ideal, though I'm sure we would get people saying it's not fair that Apple gets a section and Windows doesn't :P

That would be ideal, though I'm sure we would get people saying it's not fair that Apple gets a section and Windows doesn't :PFirst of all there is that and it'll confuse people. Second of all, there is already a number of PC vs Mac debates, these are inevitable no matter what the sub-forums and will always go on in a Technology forum.

If it makes it clear in the Portable Devices description that it caters for iPods, iPads and iPhones (as well as other MP3 players, mobile phones and tablets) then I'm sure that'll be fine. And the few iMac and MacBook threads can just be made in Technology Discussion.

I agree, I don't see why iPods and iPhones cannot be discussed within the portable devices forum.

Agree with this :) Scrap all the sub-forums apart from the Portable Devices one. Prefixes aren't needed, most forum subjects give away what the thread is about anyway (unless it's really such a bother when a forum title doesn't give away what it's about and you have to waste 5 seconds of your life to navigate out of there, pronto?)

I think I'm feeling the get rid of all the subforums apart from Portable Devices vibe (sorry Jamesy :P).

I think it would be a lot better if iPod and iPhone threads were in Portable devices as this then groups all portable devices together and I do see the need to separate portable devices.

I also agree with GommeInc that we can avoid prefixes as thread titles should give the topic away, not a huge fan of prefixes myself.

PC vs. Mac vs. Linux arguments will always exist anyway, it's one opinion vs. another - most of the time they're healthy anyway. You can't block the inevitable :P

I agree, their are barely any posts made in them sub forums so i think it is a brilliant idea and the mods have less work to do then.

How about:

- Technology Discussion
- - Computer Builds

I mean otherwise the main section will get realllllyyyyy jumbled. And my main interest is looking at peoples setups and when people are upgrading and stuff.

Nothing wrong with an active main section, there are 3 or 4 day old threads on the front page quite regularly, that looks far worse than a page full of active threads. I think the portable devices section is active enough to warrant it keeping its subforum though.

The whole tech section has gone down hill recently.

Think he problem comes from habbo being aimed at much younger people that it used to.

So younger peope sign up to the forum, and in general won't be very 'techy'

You sick, twisted puppy :O Prefixes are gnarly. The title would be a big enough clue as to what the thread will be about, seeing Apple/Windows/Linux infront would be messy. Yick.
