Hair Dye - Yay or Nay?

Basically I'm looking to colour my hair, atm im a darkish blonde (natural) and I'm looking to going a lot fairer (but not bleached!!). I've never put any products in my hair, so I was just looking for any recommendations for a hair dye, and I'm not worried about having to pay that little bit extra for it to be decent.
I straighten my hair pretty much everyday, so I'm worried the dye might just kill it. So the other thing is to whether just getting a full head of highlights?

Any genuine help would be greatly appreciated :)

um you can't go lighter without bleach?
& it'll always be permenant if it is bleach because you're stripping out pigments which give you the colour you have so it won't fade.
once you start getting highlights you'll eventually end up with it all over and it might look fake (take it from me, i got highlights in my natural ash blonde for years and it got too much too light ;o)
how about using thoes colour depositing shampoos which add a little temp. colour to brighten up your hair. not sure how well they work but worth a try.
go to your hairdresser see what she recommends cause i don't think you can go lighter temp or without bleach.

Sorry by bleach I meant that I didnt want to go bleach blonde :)
