View Full Version : EU planners have wiped the English Channel off the map

BARMY EU planners have wiped the English Channel off the map — and renamed it Le Pond.
A new atlas intended for schools downgrades the sea dividing Britain and France to a “small internal waterway”.
The move is part of a revived masterplan to build a European superstate — and is being backed by £1.1 million of UK taxpayers’ money. Eurocrats are trying to break down national boundaries by creating new trans-frontier EU regions. Under the new plan, huge swathes of southern England will join northern France as a new zone called “TransManche”.
Taxpayers are now being forced to dig deep to fund the new map of the region, which stretches from Cornwall to Kent and across Northern France from Nantes to Lille.
MPs were stunned to see drafts of the “Transmanche Atlas” and find the Channel had been renamed “small inland sea, the Franco-English Pond”.
Last night furious critics urged schools to refuse to accept any new maps based on the atlas.
The historic stretch of sea, 350 miles long and 150 miles wide at some points, has been known to Brits as the Channel for more than 1,000 years.
Traditionally it translates as “la Manche” in French — “the sleeve”.
It has been Britain’s defence against invading armies, including the Spanish armada in 1588, Napoleon and the Nazis during World War Two.
But in an astonishing foreword, the map-makers declare: “A thousand-year period, beginning with the Norman invasion of England, now nears its end as that same island becomes physically linked to the continent of Europe.”
Tories last night accused the government of erasing another bit of Britain’s proud history and tradition. Shadow communities secretary Caroline Spelman said: “Labour ministers have already sought to replace England and its shires with government office regions.
“Now British taxpayers’ money is being used literally to wipe our nation off the map, erase a thousand years of history and downgrade the English Channel to the insulting status of a pond.
“Hard-working families and pensioners will be outraged. A Conservative government will scrap these Euro plans and save the English Channel.”
The map — part-funded by the British government — is part of an initiative to create a Euro region across south England, northern France and Belgium. The project, part of the EU’s INTERREG programme of merging member states, boasts that the idea is to promote a “shared space”.
But Mats Persson, director of the Open Europe think tank, declared: “The whole exercise is ridiculous.”
Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “These atlases show what a threat the European Union is to the UK and taxpayers will be outraged their money is being used to promote EU propaganda.”

"No lets not repair ourselves after a terrible recession, lets try change a name on the map!". WHAT THE ****! I'll call it the channel and I'll get people who don't call it the channel to call it the channel. Awful waste of money.

this is a non-story. from what i can dig up using transmanche zone and atlas are some outdated webpages with no mention of the anglo-french pond - about this sort of thing it is a proposal as part of a much larger cross-regional council integration and increasing cultural, economic and educational ties. I can't find anything about this proposal apart from in the mail, notw and the express - so if someone can find an official press release relating to this it'd be appreciated.

It is stupid, I know we call the Atlantic a pond but thats just sarcasm because of the sheer size, I think the channel is a bit bigger than a pond :/ I also don't like the proposed plans for the south of England, I dont really want to live in France but actually in Britain. :S
''Hi where you do come from?'' ''I come from TransManche, you?''

I am sorry but it is the English Channel and not a pond which is there for unelected and unwanted eurocrats to rename whatever they wish. You will not find this on any European Union sites/the Guardian because it makes them look like the pathetic little Hitlers they are who cannot stand it if they dont get their own way. As a federalist yourself though, you must be very happy this 'cultural exchange' is taking place despite the fact both the majority of the French and British people do not want any of it. We need a Prime Minister who will tell this lot where to go.

right ok mate whatever you say - you are right about the channel not being a pond but the fact of the matter is of the authenticity of the story. i'd even take the times or independent. and i can't even find anything on openeurope which says anything about it nor can i find a conservative press release. sounds a bit fishy. newsnow doesn't pick anything up so i don't know how i can find anything about this apart from some vague claims about some 'eurocrats' by some right wing tabloid rags. doesn't sound like there's an awful lot of substance in these claims yet.

the thing is the only thing i can find about the transmanche zone is this project taken out: http://www.emdi.certic.unicaen.fr/en/programme/plan.html which hasn't been updated for 2 years. nor do the maps in this project label the channel as le ponde, seulement la manche et the channel.'
well i think the better working together of councils along the south coast and the north of france could be very beneficial to its economic growth. renaming the channel will never happen, nor would i support it, nor would any french or english person nor would anyone change how they call it - i think perhaps the word 'pond' could be metaphorical.
interreg are accepting proposals at the moment, but they would be just that, nor would these proposals come from eurocrats.

Who asked for this?
Did the people south of Britain ask to be part of a region which is half in France? - no.
Did the people north of France ask to be part of a region which is half in Britain? - no.
Did the people south of Britain vote for the socialist President of the region? - no.
Did the people of Britain ask for the English Channel to be renamed? - no.
Did the peope of Britain ask to be intergrated into a European superstate? - no.
Did the people of France ask to be intergrated into a European superstate? - no.
It is rather ironic that a federalist such as yourself is now pretending to have some concern for public opinion over this issue despite the fact you [the EU] has bulldozed on and on and totally ignored public opinion with the creation of a European superstate and its not some crazy conspiracy that you are building your own little Empire because even the unelected maoist Barroso said it publically and used the word 'Empire', its on camera as well. The proposals do some from eurocrats because interreg (whatever the hell that stands for or even does I do not know, but who cares what I or the British people think because we have no choice and have to fund it with our taxes anyway) is a EU funded programme that thinks up ludicrous ideas just like this one. To add to this, these maps are also to be distributed to schools.
Do you know what we call that; propaganda, and it was propaganda of the type which the Soviet Union used to influence its youth not to mention the Nazis who also corrupted the mind of the young to create the Hilter Youth. All of you had the same aims; to have Europe under one state, one flag and one leader and you are getting there. But I worry little, because you will get a big shock when we start pushing back against it - which we will, I can gurantee it.
Its not a case of 'they will never rename it' because its already being discussed/implemented by intrerreg, a EU-funded programme.

jesus chris - no it's not. i've even searched interreg and it's not. the words transmanche don't even come up in a search of submitted ideas. no one has asked for it and it's not going to happen. it's a mythical proposal made up by someone. There is NO EVIDENCE in any of these articles so don't wet yourself in finding some ammo to throw at us EU supporters. i'm glad you enjoy being lied to by the media. you've asked me to talk about my response to a proposal that doesn't exist.

They are trying to break the people of the UK so we just let them walk over us and I think they are doing a very good job at it :@ I can only see the EDL growing and huge public disorder on the streets if nobody stands up for the UK very soon.

Infact it was put on Britain by the EU to re-do these regions into EU regions, its occured all across Europe and is in a book I have which goes into detail with maps included also. I shall dig it up tommorow if I can possibly find the pages but I do remember the Germans were the driving force behind it and the French were very uneasy about it as they oppose federation in any form, although we know the French are only in the EU anyway because of the CAP policy in which they benefit massively from. I am unsure what happened with the French situation but I will attempt to find it tonight.

Labour clearly want us in the heart of the EU...... Labour are the ones who are trying to push all our services in to the regions of the UK that the EU recognise. It takes 2 to tango so I am not blaming the EU for it all..................................... Labour clearly are preparing the way so that nothing stands in the way when it is forced up on us people who NEVER got the PROMISED vote on the treaty.
Do you just want us pushed in to Europe by using stealth tactics by people with hidden agendas? or would you be happy for the country to go to the polls and decide? (Of course if it was a NO then we would be back at the polls again like the Irish)

these regions had already been largely defined anyway: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_and_alternative_regions_of_England#1945-1994 for statistical purposes before they were then used as EUparl constituencies and each sent people to the committee of the regions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_of_the_Regions
The decision to make emergency services in regions has nothing (afaik) to do with the EU.

The labour party are clearly pushing as many things as possible to fit in to these regions (There is talk of regional councils and removing city and county councils) so it will be an instant switch over when the time comes that the EU make us through their laws which over rule our own.

these regions were already firmly carved out before the EU even came to town so how you can link the decision i don't know. where is 'this talk of removing city and county councils' - sounds like complete rubbish if you ask me. it's always been argued that merging of these public services saves money, that's why they do it.
