View Full Version : Sig pic file size

Can someone please make an actual rule about this? When you go to upload a picture it says max of 700x300 and a file size of 390.6kb, which is fair enough but as is obvious from the fact that people can upload pics of bigger dimensions, they can also upload ones of huge file size without actually breaking a rule. Not a problem for those with newer computers I'm sure, but this machine for one cannot handle this and literally the entire pc freezes for a few minutes while it tries to show some sigs - one that I checked (obv a .gif) had a file size of over 37mb, somewhat bigger than the 390.6kb suggested.

I'm not suggesting that we have it forced at 390.6kb as even this computer can (I think... hope...) handle that, but there ought to be a limit put into the wording of the signature rules really, as currently there's no actual grounds for it being removed.

Agreed.

Although the image size doesn't really affect me, due to my new Mac book pro and ok broadband connection. Huge sigs slow down the forum and aint good for the old download usage if you aint on an unlimited package. I'm on a 10GB capped usage and even though a couple of Mb for a sig aint much, they all add up and could easily eat up your usage.

I agree that if there is a limit in place, we should stick to it and enforce it. I am unsure as to how someone managed to upload a signature of that size but I will certainly look into it and try and get some firm rules put into place.

ders a limit about text size but you can get around that.. and nothing gets done so i dont see why anything should be done for this....

@garion, they upload it to somewhere else i think and just use img tags

I really hope you do, no offence. It's a great sig and good quality but 37.8 MB is going OTT. :P

Sort it.

It just managed to crash Safari on my 2GB RAM, 2.0GHz Core2Duo MacBook and Firefox on my PC (4GBs RAM, 3.6GHz Quad core etc).

Thats just ridiculous.

Ban animated .gif images it really is that simple. I'm also getting tired of all these supermodels in everyones signatures and avatars, it's far too distracting when reading the forums :P

I think this is probably the best option.
Another option would be to moderate it manually. I will speak with Garion regarding this.

regarding the future rule(s), would there be a separate image size for jpgs and gifs? obviously not the size of my sig i had earlier, but small mb sizes, and not kb as sigs?

I like it when people agree with me this should happen more often. Banning .gifs in sigs altogether might be a step too far though tbh, some of the smaller ones are fine and still look fabulous *+*+*

i don't think gifs in sigs should be banned. if they were, then so should gifs in posts as it's the same issue there. we just don't see them as often though, just occasionally.

my sig now is 2.7mb, which i think is a pretty decent size.

I have no intention to ban .gifs altogether. I think this would be an overreaction. It will be discussed and we will decide ample limits for all members :).

Web pages, as a general rule of thumb, should be kept as small as possible, I think a 600kb file limit for images is a fair enough amount... IMO.

cba to make a new thread, but with the new rule it says

Donator signature images may not exceed 700 pixels x 300 pixels in total size
shouldn't it say

VIP and Donator signature images may not exceed 700 pixels x 300 pixels in total size

and i still dunno how big gifs should be tho:S

GIF images should be very small, thats the idea in GIF. Your signature is currently way more than a standard animated GIF should be (yours is about 2mb, a GIF should be way under 1mb). It may not seem a lot but just imagine if there were 30 posts on one page, everyone has 2mb sigs, thats 60mb.

A web page should be as small as possible :)

sorted the rule only saying "donator"

Just to clarify this is in discussion and a size limit will be coming into effect soon.

Can someone link me to this 37mb image?

Hmm. I view 3mb for gifs being the max, but then again my download speeds are pretty decent. :/

my d/l speeds are rubbish, and even when I'm only on my 2GB RAM netbook I very rarely crash the forum

As has been said, gifs should be small files (under 1mb)
Mine is 48.3 kb (idk if thats correct, im using 'properties' [of the file])

I know that the 700 x 300 animated signatures are huge and are difficult to load, but the smaller ones are fine.
The animated signatures I make (this one is the one with the most colours) takes 960kb on my HDD.
I try to keep to 400 x 150 to make my signatures, because I think 700 x 300 is a huge amount for an image which is a signature. I'd expect that more of a website header!

*just my pennys worth*

mines 690 x 146, and is 48.3kb
