I'm not interested in Multi-tasking really. Nonetheless I will be downloading 4.0 later :)

Gamebox will hopefully mean the end to OpenFeint, Plus+ and all those other annoying companies, I'm just hoping these new ads don't screw up free apps.

The gaming feature looks awesome, the ads look crappy, the folders look awesome, anddddddddd the multitasking is a welcome feature just because its so bloody annoying to jailbreak just for that :(

They probably didn't because it'd affect the battery life... or they couldnt be bothered working it out. Theyll get something, just not everything, out with the old & in with the new :P

It's Apples way telling the user to pay for the upgrade. :P

They say everything then just slot that 'small, insignificant fact' in at the end. Looks like I'l hold out and get a 4th Gen iPT.

Whats stupid is First Gen Owners (Who paid the most for their devices) seem to get nothing. Despite the fact they are more than capable of all of the features, except perhaps multi-tasking.

Business is vicious, and Apple know that people are going to buy their products no matter what.

You heard that right, people -- iPhone OS 4 just brought multitasking to the platform! Apple says they've figured out how to implement third party multitasking without hurting performance or battery life, and they're demoing it now -- you just double click the home button and see a list of your apps, and you can just tap to switch between apps. The system actually runs the services apps need in the background -- the apps don't need to do them individually, so it's not a "true" multitasking system, but it seems plenty effective. There are seven services: background audio, which allows you to use the standard pop-over iPod controls, Voice over IP, which can receive calls in the background, location services for GPS and social networking (there's an indicator if any service is tracking you), updated push notifications with local notifications, task completion so you can finish things like uploads in the background, and fast app switching, which lets apps sleep and resume instantly. Notably missing? Anything for managing a conversation, like IM or Twitter, which is a big omission. Win some, lose some, we suppose.

Update: Here's a big "lose some" -- only the iPhone 3GS and 3rd generation (late 2009) iPod touch will support multitasking. The iPhone 3G and below won't -- Steve says the hardware doesn't support it. Sad face.

score.

My developer account is going to take 24 hours to activate as I forgot to renew it last month, stupid Apple monitoring everything now :/.

I take it that I am the first one with 4.0 then? Yey!

as if my phone isn't capable of muti-tasking -_-

Meh I've not read it all but multi-tasking is a pretty big thing not to give us just to hope we'll upgrade, getting a bit greedy I think Mr Jobs!

Totally new iPhone software = totally new iPhone v. soon ;)

It's unfortunate mine won't be able to multitask - I only have a 3G :(

And that's why I jailbreak, such simple things get left out for me (iPhone 3G user)

i use an iphone 3g and am a bit dissapointed that i won't be getting multi-tasking... but my upgrade is due in the summer, and so i will be getting the new iphone that will be released in the summer, so it won't affect me, the next iPhone promises to be a cracker.

I haven't heard good stuff about the developers preview. Apparantly it's incredibly buggy and impossible to downgrade. That will be ironed out by release of course but as developers I would suggest you don't bother for now.

I'm not gonna buy a new iPod just to gain multitasking. I shall likely wait until either this year's iPod touch or next year's. The only reason I upgrade is if I've run out of space.

I only really upgrade the OS when I have an iTunes voucher. I was running 2.2.1 until January, purely because I only buy anything from iTunes when I have a voucher.

I like the look of the Games Center, and iAd does look quite well executed. Folders will clear my home screens up a hell of a lot, and the wallpaper isn't exactly anything special to me, but it's a nice touch (that should have been there from the original iPhone, but nvm)

Well I wont be upgrading until it's jailbroken :)

You can get multitasking through jailbroke applications.

I'll post a full review later so far I am rather impressed with it.

yeah i know that, but once 4.0 is out i don't think i'll be jailbreaking, they're even putting in in-app texting so you don't have to exit applications to text... the only thing i will be missing if i don't jailbreak is all apps free... but I can do without that.

My summary from having used it for nearly 24 Hours now:
Nothing revolutionary but better than 2.0 to 3.0 was. Beta builds pretty good :D
