View Full Version : Knife and Forks

Bit of a random one, but there is a point to it I promise :P
Recently I noticed that I maybe use my knife/fork wrong. For example, I eat with my knife in my left hand and my fork in the right. If you go in to a restaurant then they are set the opposite way. So my question is, which way round do you hold your knife/fork?
My sister also holds her knife/fork the same as me, as does my Dad but not my mum haha.
Ooh and vote in poll please :)

Both.
Depends really. Having fork in right hand is so much easier to eat. But knife should be in right hand so its easier to cut.

At home I usually use a fork by itself with my right hand but in public I have manners and use the fork left handed and the knife right handed.

From a young age I was taught to hold knife in the right hand and fork in the left and was told it's really bad manners to do it the other way. My parents are really strict though :(

It's so annoying sitting next to someone who does the opposite :(

Fork left, knife right and seeing people eat it the other way makes me feel uncomfortable... no offence :|

I was also brought up that using my fork in my left and knife in the right is the correct way, I also got moaned at if I sett'd the table wrong when I was younger so I know now which side is which and the other way is just awkwarrrrddddddd, because when I see other people doing it the other way they kinda use the fork as a nail to nail their food to the plate and then put the knife in and tear away from it +o(

i use my fork in my left hand and my knife in the right, but it's probably just because i'm left handed and find it hard the other way. but then again, my mum always told me that fork in left and knife in right is the 'proper' way. it bothers me though if somebody sets the table and puts it the other way around :P

that wasn't the question and so what? you're probably only a few years older than most of us.
i've never heard it was bad manners or that there was a "proper" way to hold them.
i use my knife with my left and fork with my right, no-one else in the family does.

Oh thank god I aren't alone.

People saying that the other way (fork in left, knife in right) is the proper way are correct but I literally can't hold them that way round. It's comparable to trying to make me write with my left hand, it just doesn't work. It's a bit awkward in posh restaurants and things when you have to swap them around though :(

I hold the fork in the left and knife in the right, if I swap them in public I'll look like a **** imo.

Yeah fork in left is the "right" way to do it, so that your right hand has the knife you can chop through tough foods easier. But nah, unless I'm with the posh people in my family I use fork in right.

I was unaware people did it differently. I've always done fork left and knife right like it should be done. No doubt this will now annoy me as I will look out for people doing it wrong :P

It's like wearing a watch on your right hand, why on earth would anyone do that? I'm generally not a traditional person but things like this irritate me xD

Way over your head. Just because you're with your parents, doesn't mean you need to eat like you live on a farm.

I live on a farm and I hold my knife and fork right... I don't think that's a very fair way to stereotype farmers.

whaaaaaaaaaat? i wear mine on my right hand:(
but yeh i don't go looking at the way people eat & i'm not gonna judge them on it, so can't see why it bothers you misawa. although my gran always shouted at me if i rested my elbows on the table so now i don't but don't exactly think people who do are ill-mannered

Almost half of the people who have voted hold their cutlery completely wrong. That's reassuring to know. Christ.

As holding the fork in right hand is easier ...

Now I know why so many people dislike you - your attitude is just awful.

Maybe not for you. But then again you can't see past your own nose so it's what I would expect.

But that suggests it's difficult to use your left, and it really isn't. Surely if anything, it would depend on which handed you are anyway? But at the end of the day, holding an implement isn't as intricate a task as operating a pen for instance.

If someone is left handed, wouldn't they do it the opposite way to us? Thus rendering Misawa's ridiculous hounding of members completely and utterly pathetic.

I have my fork on my left hand and my knife on my right hand, solely because I have more power in my right hand so I can cut it easily.
