My laptop has windows vista on it atm, looking to put xp on it.
Is there anyway of downloading xp and installing it on the laptop, or putting it on a memory card and installing?
Of course.
Torrent, Linkshare, XDCC/IRC, DC++, Usenet. - Just to name a few.

how would i install it tho? withought using cd/memory stick
Well that wouldn't be possible. You need at least a USB thumb drive, or an external/internal CD drive.
You can download XP as an ISO illegaly, and burn it to a CD then just run it from the CD/USB drive.
I don't want to fully explain how you would get hold of XP because i risk being banned. However google will be able to help you.
Then it's just a case of burning straight to a disc.

You can PXE boot your laptop and then use a TFTP server to install Windows XP without a CD or USB stick (so the above post is wrong).
You could also use an SD Card or whatever.
Google PXE install Windows XP. You'll get some nice guides.

When I read the title, I thought this was "Vista is better than XP" lol.
Just something else you might find interesting, there's an popular, unofficial version of XP called TinyXP.
This is normal XP but stripped of a lot of unnecessary features, meaning it runs quite a lot faster (depends on which copy you install).
I won't go into any more detail, but a lot of people prefer it to the standard version.
Note that when you install any version of XP you will need to find and install drivers for your hardware to get it to work properly (eg. Sound, graphics, wifi)

You'll need drivers for Windows 7 as well (although different versions).
Your best bet is to try and find them before you reinstall.

if you go onto the manufacturers website of your laptop it should have a download link, there you will find windows 7 drivers and if its there you will be able to download them :)
eeer about installing off an sd card just a shot in the dark here, but if you can install something like winrar on the laptop you want to install the OS to and open the .iso file (whether it be windows 7 or XP) and just double click the setup it should just run without any trouble at all onto the harddrive?
Although, if you want to run the setup via BIOS you would need to make the SD card bootable
I hope this helps, sorry if any information is inaccurate im sure someone will correct me if so :)

I've never installed from USB / SD, although I assume it goes something like this.
Copy all the files/directories onto the SD card (or there might be special software to "burn" it onto the card)
Then go into BIOS and set the boot priority so that the SD card reader/ "USB" comes before the HDD.
Second thoughts
Why not just google for a guide?
Well if you download an .ISO OS and copy that file onto the SD card and then put it into your laptop, then open the .iso with WinRAR, open setup.exe and it should install fine? What problems are you facing sorry?

ah then this should be easy :)
1 - copy windows7.iso or whatever the file name is for the setup for OS onto SD Card (although if its only 1gb i'd suggest windows xp because windows 7 ultimate takes up 3.4GB)
2 - Put SD card into laptop and simply open the ISO in WinRar and run Setup.exe - Do NOT take out the SD card until you first see the login screen
Now, if this doesnt work I suggest going creating a bootable SD Card (google how to do this) and transfer w7 or xp to the SD card and boot from SD card from Bios menu, (press either esc 3 times on start-up or f2 on manufacturers start up screen and select boot diisk priority or something -> SD (or USB depending on Bios Version) it should then install fine.

Wouldn't that just try to boot from the "CD"?

im not entirely familar with SD card setups etc, but I've installed Windows 7 from an external harddrive on an .iso format and the setup.exe ran fine, and also installed windows XP from a USB drive via BIOS and faced no problems there? It must vary on outcome depending on what OS it is?

I don't know the answer, but get a larger card. Especially when 4Gb and 8Gb cards are so cheap nowadays.

Windows XP should be fine on a 1GB card, Windows 7 will need over 4GB

I had Windows XP (No service packs) and it took around 500mb installation and I had windows 7 ultimate (no updates either) and that took up around 3.5gb
