Last night, my computer detected some trojans and whatnot trying to get into my pc, so i tried to get rid of em. apparently my security had ran out so i downloaded AVG asap and scanned my pc.

im pretty sure everything has gone now, but whenever i want to open any program ,it makes me select from a list (unless i right click and run as administrator). and when i plug in my headset, usually it asks me whether its a microphone n some other stuff, and then same wit the headphones, but today that hasnt come up.

Now when i try to go into my sound to check if my mic is working (it usually doesnt if that thing i explained above doesnt pop up), and i go control panel -> sound it gives me the error
"c:/windows/system32/rundll32.exe

application not found"

really got no idea what to do.

Any help appreciated

Might be something to do with .EXE file association, I know it's a direct link to the folder but it's the only one I can find that works with Vista http://www.winhelponline.com/fileasso/exefix_vista.zip (btw i've virus scanned it and it's fine). It will restore normal .exe association and shoulddd fix the problem. All you need to do is unzip it, and run it as administrator then allow it to merge with your registry. SHOULD fix it.

Backup. Format. Reinstall. (as Jewish Bear says :L) would be the smartest option imo. Just start fresh, so it makes sure everything IS gone and that everything does work.

That's a registry file, I suggest either finding a way to re-install this dll or reboot, im pretty sure you can do some command's in 'run' to fix this but im not entirely sure,
I know this file usually goes corrupt when you get a trojan and it manipulates data to allow it to corrupt more files etc what you need to do is find a way to re-install this file,
Sorry for being a bit sketchy but google rundll32 error or something, im sure there is a detailed info site somewhere that can really help, hope this helps :)

Google for a rundll32.exe Vista version and download, then copy pasta the file there, or ask someone else with Windows Vista to send you it.

I'd reinstall if it had trojans though.

The thing popping up when you plug in headphones or a microphone isn't a problem, it's a feature. It allows you to map the soundcard better than default windows crap. Just hit enter when it pops up.

I agree, if you've had a trojan I think thats the safest option,

Whats the difference? Not amazingly tech savvy :p

oh and the mic is working perfectly it seems without the thing popping up, thanks :p

A restore takes your computer back to the state it was in the past. A reinstall will give you a completely fresh OS with nothing on it.

it was a trojan lmao... it's like worse than iceland's volcano to most of the people on here. why on earth would you do a full windows reformat.

it just mucked up the registry and now it's removed we've resolved the .exe problem so it's all sorted really.

just keep something like Avast! free running or something bro

Luke
21-04-2010, 04:48 PM
because it's better to be safe; i'd rather go knowingly with a fresh install than carry on, unaware there could be something else tbh.

so how would i go about doing this reinstall? And itll JUST take me back to an earlier point in time? should i back up any work i may have done just incase?

Luke

A reinstall requires a Windows disc; you'd need to backup all your documents/music/pictures etc

Nemo
21-04-2010, 05:03 PM
think ive got a vista home disc somewhere, could that work?

Thanks for all the quick help btw guys, really appreciated. +rep if i can

yeah it should, it should ask you for a "custom" install which will wipe your harddrive and re-install windows :)

Naughtynemo why are you reformatting when you don't need to what so ever lmao? You're going to lose everything you've got at the moment and have to re-install all because of a Trojan Horse... it's not affecting you at all at the moment if you've got antivirus...

its manipulated registry programs. it could be in the pc's system right now and the firewall could of casually ignored it as a registry update or something tedious like that, you can not guarantee that its safe. although with a clean install you can be sure your pc is safe thanks :)

It could be, but I'm 99.99% positive it's cleared now and there is no such need for such a drastic reformat. Most AV's have deep root analysis that even checks registry entries. Up to him/her what they do but it's really not necessary, just saving them time really.

Better safe than sorry, just depends how good your AV is, :)

Most AV's also fail, hard.

To be fair, this is a fairly new pc (was givento me, used before, but had been wiped also when given to me). so theres really only like woW and a couple other programs. not much to transfer either

never said anyone was a techinal expert? Im not familar with registry issues and such but what I do know is that a trojan is hard to entirely clear.

Not for me, maybe our opinion on the matter differs, or maybe skill level, who knows?

Anyway, before going over the trouble of reinstalling, monitor the situation for a few days; check for recurrences of the previous symptoms, and if they're gone, don't bother with a reinstall.

Considering we are on a forum for young people / young adults then I highly doubt everybody will have knowledge of advanced virus removal etc, so essentially it is safer or maybe more so convenient to a clean install? Im not trying to have a go, im just expressing what I feel is the best solution to a problem :)

Read my last post. Sound advice for anyone. Using your own logic, a reinstall for someone that has low amounts of knowledge on computers is often a risky idea.

Lol. Virus removing isn't really a skill. If you can't remove a virus you're gonna be pretty bad at computers in general. Anyway this post, and the previous 3 didn't contribute to the discussion so it's probably better we stop it now ;)

ONCE INFECTED: BACKUP. FORMAT. REINSTALL.

You never know what a virus/trojan does when it gets hold of your computer. The only way to become guaranteed virus free is to backup your data, format the hdd and reinstall the os.

Agreed.

If you really want to, download Hijack This! to see what's running, but I'd still reinstall Windows.

Virus removal is a skill.

I can't believe people are defending the idea that a reinstall is not necessary! Like jewbear said there could be a keylogger or something else malicious that you weren't even aware of and before you know it BAM you have one less full bank account. Formatting is the only option tbh

Virus removal is not a skill, if a computer has a virus in school we just reimage it, doesn't take long and thanks to our server their documents are all saved (and scanned).

What I usually do is find out the virus name, google the virus name, find out what virus definition sites have to say about it & then proceed to find removal instructions. Also find out what registry files it makes, & run both Spybot S&D (as well as immunisation tool), Malwarebytes & ESET NOD32 (tis what i use k) and see what comes up. Also scan your USB drives if you have any as it's a good place of finding them. No need to reinstall your OS tbh, but lolworthy that people tried to make you do that.

oh and NEVER do a system restore if you've got a virus, virus developers aren't stupid and they will either delete your system restore points upon infection OR infiltrate them so you're only rolling back to a restore with the virus still there.

Granted formatting and installing can be a hassle with documents and files, it is the only way after infection to know that you are safe unfortunately, no AV can promise that you will be safe after you have been infected once.
