So can someone tell me why people worship him as an English hero?

It's always fascinated me. He was an immigrant and we all love him on this day. Except me, for this very reason.

With that said, Happy being English day!

Because he is the Patron Saint of England.

Nothing wrong with immigrants

Not saying there is anything wrong with immigrants, stop taking this thread out of context in order to instigate an argument, please. And yes, you knew what you were doing.

THE PATRON SAINT OF ENGLAND, who a) didn't even exist apart from in story books and b) wasn't even from England.

It bemuses me.

The fact he wasn't from England is irrelevant. There is a Patron Saints for lots of things, including diseases - probably diseases that the Saint hasn't even suffered. St George did exist, a lot of details are disputed though. But he did exist. Obviously he didn't slay a dragon though.

Fair enough, I just think we should celebrate England on this day and not St George.

That is the idea. St George represents England, but lets be honest no one really celebrates religious events in a religious way any more - so we celebrate England.

Then why did you say
He was an immigrant and we all love him on this day. Except me, for this very reason.

It's a metaphorical legend.
