It is mostly incompatible. Don't buy it tomorrow. I don't have time to suggest alternatives now though.

Bump yourself up to the M4A77TD Pro. And I'd deeply consider you get an M4A89GTD Pro (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/197748) (also available with USB 3.0 for £15 more)

And get a better PSU. Corsair do good ones. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132563 would suffice.

I'll be honest, at his budget, he'd likely get an i3/low i5. AMD is his best bet.

AMD Phenom II are very good.

If you're going AMD, get the new 6 cores.

Not necessarily. If he doesn't do something like video encoding on a regular basis, it wouldn't be worth it.

Get a Phenom, though.

The new ones are phenom's and are not much more expensive than the quad core versions (the lowest model, anyway). You can grab one for about £155.

Rekon I would see a difference between the 3.2GHz model and my X4 965 (3.4GHz) ?

Depends on what you're doing. If it's things like gaming then it will be slower. Threaded things such as encoding it will be noticeably quicker.

a 200Mhz difference wouldn't be even noticeable in games. Although, from your post in the specs thread, it seems you don't use your computer for games. So an extra two cores would be brilliant.

I'm not sure if £230 is worth the extra 2 cores tbh.

When you put it that way, it isn't worth it really. You could always sell your old CPU which would take a chunk out of the sting.

Unless you do encoding, it probably isn't.
