Okay, I'm nearly 17 and I have set my heart on getting an RS125 bike but the only problem is that both my parents don't want me to have it. Ive tried persuading them with no joy. However at the moment I can't stop thinking about getting one, ive thought about just getting one without my parent and bringing it home which wouldn't end up very well i presumed but I see no other way :/ And don't say "just don't get one" cause i REALLLLYYY want one.

SO
any ideas how I could persuade them into thinking bikes are okay?
Ive tried saying ill be careful and take my test and things but nothing has worked so far...

Thanks
Paul

I really wanted a bike for a bit, then the desire dies down and you think "what was I thinking, riding a deathtrap". Four wheels are so much better than 2, save for a car or you'll regret it.

Was in the exact same position dude :). There is really only one way they will allow you to ride a bike and thats to show them your RESPONSIBLE as they wont be convinced by any other means.

For example, my dad is a biker but my mum was really against it and expectedly refused to let me have one. Shes still not fully supportive but she would atleast let me have one (Getting one this summer :). You need to sit them down at a table and have a LONG discussion, tell them how it will improve your life and that you will be responsible but also that you willing to do training etc such as CBT and eventually your bike test. This way you can prove them that your a responsible guy so that they have less of a need to be worried.

Yeah well if everything went bad when I discussed I'll probably just get one myself as I can and they can't stop me? The thing is though I wouldn't be an idiot on the road, id ride like a saint but my parents don't trust me :/

Yeah I'll try the long discussion first and try and get them onboard by telling them I'll ride safley, do my CBT, how much I need it and then how they will be my personal taxi other wise :P and if that doesn't work then I'll probably just go out and buy one on my own :/ It's so annoying how they are SO against it though :/

My parents wern't really happy when i first got my moped, then i was fine on that and they let me get a 125cc cross bike then when i wrote that off it was it, they said i wasn't allowed another one although im doing my bike test at the moment im not planning to have a bike for a while it is pure adrenaline though, something you wont feel for a while but meh. i nearly died because of a stupid driver hitting into the back of me at high speeds but your old enough for a car, so its well worth it.

So how did you persuade them in the first place to get a moped?

Thing is, it's not safe on the road for bikes. I've done races on track, wouldn't even dare go out on a bike on the roads. It's not worth the risk at all, especially at 17, get a nice car.

Bikes, imo, are absolute deathtraps and I can see where your parents are coming from; they're just really concerned for your safety, I mean put yourself in their position: how rubbish would you feel if your son crashed his motorbike and was really badly injured?
It's all very well saying "oh I'll be careful" etc etc but you've gotta see it from their point of view - they're not just saying no to annoy you.

Yeah I know what you and my parents are saying, but I'm old enough to make my own decisions and it's not like I'll be racing around being a **** I'll only be going from home to work and school so I can't see the problem really. I need an EPIC comeback for when my parents say 'well it's too dangerous' ???

Find out some statistics like more people die from being stabbed in the street than do being killed from a motorbike accident (this isnt real but just look up some figures)

A the moment you are my Personal Taxis at all times which I don't think is fair so I am going to get a bike and these are the following reasons why.

• I can see that you are trying to turn me into a independent adult by setting up my bank account and things but then contradicting yourselves by telling me I shouldn't get a bike even when I am legally allowed to.
• A bike will enhance my life, I wont have to catch the bus to school saving you money, You wont have to pick me up and drop me off at work any more, saving you time.
• I will pay for everything including the bike, insurance, tax, cbt (compulsory basic training) and petrol.
• The CBT will tell me everything there is to know about the bike and how to look after myself on the road, there is a lot of assessed practical testing and also a 2 hour session on learning the basic theory so I can ride safely on the road without endangering myself or other road users.
• I will only be doing short journeys such as going to school and back and to work and back and maybe the odd occasion where I go to town or something but I will not be doing long distances.
• I will only be going places that I already know the routes to such as to Wolverhampton, school and work so I already know where to expect potential dangers.
• You say the reason that I shouldn't have a bike is because it is too dangerous but as I said before I will only be going short distances to places I know so I know where to look etc and I wont be going very fast so the chances of coming off are very slim.
• I will also buy protective gear such as a reinforced jacket and a brand new helmet for your complete piece of mind.
• It's not like I'm irresponsible and I'm not going to be doing stupid things, I'm not going to be driving like an idiot because I obviously value my life and don't wont to end up falling off and injuring myself.
• I want a bike because I cannot afford a car in the first place or the running costs whereas a bike is much less to buy, less to insure, less to tax, less to run and less to learn.
• You say there's more accidents on bikes than in cars but I've checked on the DVLA website and it says that there are more people involved in car accidents.
• I can see what you are saying when you say it's dangerous and I can understand that you are worried about me but I will ride like a saint and be as careful as possible.
• I am only going to have the bike for less than 2 years while I gather enough money to afford a car.
• If I did fall off the bike then I would sell it and forgot about bikes and get a car instead.
• I have done a lot of research on what bike I should get, the costs and what licences and I have come to the decision to get an RS125 which will cost me around £1500 for a second hand one and the of course I am going to need to insure it so that is just £600 for Third Party Fire and Theft and finally I already have a provisional licence for a car and I have already done my CBT so I have gone to pick up the bike today.
• In total it will cost me £2395 as the bike itself costs £1500 + the insurance which is £600 and the CBT which costs £95 and I will buy the best protective gear there is which will cost about £100 as appose to a £2000 car with £2000 insurance and another £400 actually learning to drive so in total it will cost £4400 which is just for a small car and is already double what it costs for a bike and I cannot afford it.

That's what I'm going to give to my parents but I'm not sure whether I should do it before or after I get the bike?... I realise some of it doesn't make sense too I haven't finished. Also anything else I should add?

Few points with your previous statement, its not a question of IF you come off its a question of WHEN. Ask anyone in the biking world and they will give you the same answer. I dont mean to sound harsh but your going to have to revise your figure for protective equipment as £100 aint enough for the helmet alone nevermind anything else. You should aim to spend £150+ MINIMUM on a bike helmet that fits PROPERLY and is COMFORTABLE :).

Apart for these yeh good reasons and good luck man :)

Helmet is the thing you need the most, get a gold star one for sure. I spent ALOT on helmets still have 2 in my house one for my moped and one for my dirt bike, I spent near enuf £600 on both. The more you pay, the more safe you are.
Secondly a jacket spent near £110 on, really needed with arm padding.
Trousers i never had any proper ones i was going to get some but never had the time, they arnt as needed any the other 2 but are worth getting, as are protective boots.

Also.... If I was to just go out and buy a bike would I be able to actually buy one from a dealer due to my age? (17)

of course :), i just recently bought a new 10 plate mazda 2 from a dealership and they are fine with it :). Providing its cash youll be fine but if you need finance youll have to get your parents to sign for finance even though the bike can still be registered in your name.

I advise you to not get a bike at all, but you're allowed up to a 125cc until you are 21. Make sure you get decent leathers and a good helmet.

Even if you say you will be careful, it's other people that are careless.
