Hey guys,
This is probably a relatively well known trick but I thought I'd create a wee guide on how to create iPhone ringtones for free using only iTunes for all the noobs :P You don't need to download any special software or pay a penny, just need to follow this simple guide. View the Spoiler tabs to see images of the descriptions:
Firstly, you must ensure that your settings are as such so that you can see/edit the file extensions in the filenames. To do this, go to Contol Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Folder Options, browsing to the "View" tab and unticking the "Hide extension for known file types" box (NOTE: I'm using Windows 7, how to do this may differ depending on the operating system you are using).

Next, find the song you wish to make a ringtone of in iTunes, right click on it and go to "Get Info". Browse to the Options tab and edit the "Start Time" and "Stop Time". Try not to make it any longer than 30 secs and using the MM:SS.SSS format, and click OK. (NOTE: Although the example in the screencaps is 40 seconds, it didn't actually work for me, this was just for example's sake).

Then, highlight song you edited and go to "Advanced" > "Create AAC Version". A duplicate song will appear just below it in your library but the only difference will be their lengths; the ringtone you created will be significantly shorter in length than the original. Copy this duplicate to your desktop, deleting it from your iTunes library once you have done this.

Now, go to the new file you've now copied to your desktop. Edit the file extension from an m4a to m4r (this is crucial otherwise it will not work). The icon should change slightly and say "RING" on it (mines doesn't, just due to OS differences)

Copy the new m4r file from your desktop back to your iTunes library. However, it should now appear in the "Ringtones" section of the library. Copy this to your iPhone, and it will appear in the "Ringtones" section of the phone's summary.

You can now choose the new ringtone in the "Ringtones" section of the phone under "Sounds".
