View Full Version : Do you need protection from the sun?

I am pretty fair skinned so unless I wear sun protection of a high factor to start with all I do is burn.
A natural tan does look great I think as opposed to fake ones. I really envy people who only have to look at the sun and get a nice healthy colour. What type are you? Also do you think we should avoid the sun at all costs because of the dangers of skin cancer? I do believe that sun helps promote health as it boosts our immune system as it is a natural provider of Vitamin D.

not usually, it depends how hot it is, if it's really hot then yeah i'll need a bit but if it's just a bit sunny i tend to tan

Im naturally brown so nah i dont use protection - i can go to spain and abroad and not use any sun cream.
Only time ive ever slightly been burnt is in the canary islands, and thats because its like 50 degrees, i wasnt even badly burnt, just my shoulders were hot lol.

I'm half Spanish so I think that works in my favour. I usually get a tan only a day or two into a holiday and rarely ever burn, in fact I'm pretty sure that I've only ever been sunburnt once.

I burn pretty easy which sucks. I broke the lid on my suntan lotion bottle this morning - gutted :( It's not a very high factor anyway so I'm going to need to buy some more.

Thread question and poll question aren't necessarily related - I don't tan much at all but I don't tend to burn for some reason either, so I don't need huge amounts of protection. Even in Egypt last summer I was only using factor 30 and didn't burn anywhere, which makes me something of a miracle child as gingers go.

Well like 2 years ago in Greece I was wearing factor 50 and still managed to get rly burnt, but I was snorkling so my back was quite exposed :(

but no, generally I burn on my face and chest, but everywhere else is fine.

But they aren't unrelated and asking what factor sun cream peeps use is pretty uninspiring, FJ :Pxx

burned once at a water park in italy, but never burned since or before cause i am very brown for a whitey - infact i've been racially abused for being the wrong race on more than one occasion.

Nope, I don't. I'm already quite tanned 24/7 lol! Here in Hong Kong we get lots of sun. However, if I go get sun burnt or if the UV index is very high, then yes I would put on some sun scream.

I tan pretty easily and almost never burn, without sun cream ofc which is pretty much industrial waste anyway. Get plenty of midday sunlight (seek shade before you start to burn though, which will eventually take longer) don't use sun creams which are likely the cause of skin cancers, get good vitamin d levels and a good tan and enjoy yourself.

I burn pretty easily and sort of tan. Face and arms were fairly burnt after a few hours on the beach the other day and at Glastonbury last year mine and my friend's legs got so burnt we could barely walk. I was actually in agony whenever I tried to get up or sit down for the following two or three days.

I never really use sun cream, can someone explain what the different numbers mean? :P

How strong each one is. SPF 45 is the strongest overhere..

The stronger it is, the more protection
