View Full Version : Making online Habbo-like game (not a retro)

Some of you may have seen this, I posted about a month ago:
http://apolva.co.cc/other/isoroom/
Basically I've taken that and turning it into a basic habbo-style game.
I'm looking for people to help me ;) There's no pay, but I thought it's a fairly interesting project, and you'd of course get some credit. It's not meant to be very popular, just a little tactical exercise.
Summary of work done so far
Working client + server (not a great server mind you). Working flash login, room list and room loading (loads furni from MySQL database at server end).
It's all in very early stages at the moment. You can't yet see yourself, walk around and chat and there's only 5 pieces of working furni.
Client
Currently written Flash (ActionScript 2) with some rather poor coding practices (just gonna get it working first :P)
Server
Currently written in Java, with MySQL server (JDBC) backend providing rooms, users etc.
I'm pretty new (and bad) at Java, so if anyone has knowledge of it that would be great.
There's no online demo as I'm sure it's pretty unstable (and I've got the policyfile blues ).

Awesome. I made an isometric engine in AS3, I would SERIOUSLY consider swapping to AS3 if I were you. I would join you, but I'm already involved in my own game :P

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still trying to get Flex to work (as you mentioned in another thread). Can't seem to install/build it due to lack of installation instructions :(
The thought of OOP sends shivers down my spine (yeh, java is but whatever :P)

You code Java? You're aware that the AS3 syntax is pretty much identical to Java yeah? :D

I'm just learning Java, too. I have no idea how threads work, for example, just changing examples :P
I would like to get into OOP, I've been using procedural so long it seems so strange :S

As I said in the other thread, learning the OOP concept is difficult, and finding reason to use it is difficult, but AS3 forces you to use it and inevitably makes your code beautiful (sounds nerdy, but I can't think of another word haha). The Actionscript in that project I posted is probably a good place to start. I just rewrote packet data handling to use JSON, everything is so easy.
Ima probably do Java when I have more time, I'm so used to "proper" coding, it should be a breeze. I'm not sure about lower-level things though, they will probably confuse me.

Cool design. Hope it goes well when it first opens and i will be using it when it opens!!
Hopefully this wont be one of the other many replicas which just go down the toilet after a few months. Good luck in the future with this game thingy

Thanks people :)
A little progress update - moving furni now works server-side (now working on "pick up furni").
Could do with some bug testers for when this goes public :)

JW, how are you structuring your data transfer?

Mostly pipe deliminated, occasionally with some other symbols as well

Ah right. Serialization is the way forward tbh :D

New screenshots:

Progress (since last screenshots):
- Pick up/rotate/move furni buttons (working)
- New isometric depth sorting algorithm (old one was pretty buggy)
- New hotel view/login/navigator look

Maybe :) although it's quite early days, still lots of stuff to sort out.
Good luck :) you've got to be careful about your 'furni' concepts though because they seem to be swaying towards the Habbo side ;)
and with the delete you shouldn't have to get it onto the square, it'd be cool if you could click the item anywhere and it'd delete rather than having to click the square
