Hello, I've been doing basic cardio for a few years now. Basic being a 1-2 mile run, 3 days a week. Usually around the weekend and a day before or after. I'm going to start going to the gym, primarily to put a bit of muscle on, not exactly the biggest guy in the work. I'm going to go to gym every Monday (starting from next) with friends, currently planning a workout routine to take up and I'm also going to start home gym on Thursday as my dad has the majority of the basic equipment needed when it comes to weights and stuff. My friends told me not to overdue cardio as they said it would eat at my muscle tissue, they've been going to the gym for about 5 years now. I've changed my cardio up a bit now, every day I'm not attending gym I'd be doing about a 10 mile cycle every morning with a friend. Do you see anything wrong with this, I'm fairly slim (115lbs) and fairly small (5'6) so I'm a bit concerned. I dont have much muscle but I'm not fat either.
Thanks.

Yeah honestly I would ditch any thought of cardio unless your training for a sport.
You need to find a calorie intake that is atleast 500 calories above your maintenence. This is known as bulking, lifting heavy and eating till you pass out.
I'd reccommend you to the rippetoe program strarting strength (google it)
Eat alot honestly even if it's junk but try and aim to get healthy calories through.
Further into the bulking phase you can start introducing some cardio if you feel your gaining too much fat.
goodluck man:)

Thank you, I have no idea how to do some of the exercises or what machines to use. I guess I'll see when I go along.

SS by Rippetoes pretty much requires the book, you can do a similar program with a big community with no purchases required:
http://stronglifts.com/
You are a skinny teen, GOMAD + food. These should get you at least 3.5k calories (go for 4k or more) and do heavy compound lifts. In a couple of months you'll be a different guy, psychologically and physiologically different. Good luck.

I had a look at that, my friend who has been going to the gym said that doing squats and deadlifts in 1 day isnt good plus he said that 3 days a week is too much. Plus he said there is too much overlapping
He goes twice but I dunno, I think 3 is okay. I have no idea how to do half those exercises. What would you recommend for diet, loads of protein?
eat everything in sight.
hit gym 4x/ week < lift heavy give your muscles 5-8 days to repair
eat, lift, rest, eat. repeat

My friend recommended a book, I bought it. I'll read it first and then hit the gym. It is called "Beyond Brawn" by Stuart McRobert
