View Full Version : Raw Egg
If something has raw egg in it, will you still eat it?
For example, if you're baking will you snack on the mixture even though it has raw egg in? :P

Eating raw eggs always carries a risk of salmonella, but it's very rare in Class A eggs, which are the only ones you should eat uncooked. Eggnog, steak tartare and real mayonnaise (not what you find in jars) all include raw eggs.

Yeah, some people still don't trust Class A eggs :(

A lot of companies that manufacture raw egg based products actually pasteurise the egg so like you said the risk of salmonella is quite low

When I was a kid my dad wouldn't even give me boiled eggs that weren't fairly well done for risk of salmonella. I've probably tasted a mix before but didn't like it, I wouldn't sit there eating spoonfuls of it lol

Yes... I take raw egg whites daily with whey and it tastes good. Wouldn't fancy the yolk, don't like it much but it wouldn't bother me.

The yolk is the only bit I'd eat raw, considering the extremely high levels of nutrients in it - it's a 'superfood' (I hate that term). The problem with raw egg white is: It's harder to digest when raw, and contains avidin. Avidin is a glycoprotein that binds to the B vitamin biotin which is B7 iirc. This is an anti-nutrient, and isn't the only anti-nutrient in egg whites. Taking raw egg whites with whey is pretty counter-productive. They contain trypsin inhibitors, this stops the enxyme trypsin from doing its job which is digesting protein. They are quite potent, reducing protein digestion by up to 90%.
Cooking eggs doesn't have a major impact on the nutrients in the egg, but if you must eat them raw, and must eat the whites, at least you can be safe in the knowledge that salmonella is virtually non existent in class A lion mark eggs.

As you should know raw/liquid egg whites contain protein so if it has something in it that stops the digestion of protein then why do people eat/drink it?
And I buy the stuff in bottles, it's salmonella free.

Can't edit, forgot to mention the whites are pasteurised and/or heated - I dug something up on Google and said pasteurisation kills the bacteria/salmonella and it also kills the 'protein digestion inhibitors'

If that is so then they aren't raw. The degree to which the trypsin inhibitors are deactivated depends on the length of the pasteurisation. You're probably ok, I think pasteurised eggs are a waste of money though. Inferior to normal eggs. There are better ways to consume protein if you're on the run (which is the only reason I can imagine someone would buy pasteurised eggs in bottles like http://www.myprotein.co.uk/products/liquid_egg_whites ). The reason people drink eggs raw would be because they saw Rocky doing it, or they think it contains better quality protein than cooked which really isn't true.

I just assumed uncooked meant raw, like raw meat...
Well it's good enough for me, adds protein to the shake and also makes it drinkable as with water it's not too great and I'm not drinking milk. Reason I do it is because they have a decent amount of protein, no fats (although that doesn't matter), no carbs and a low amount of calories compared with other foods. 250ml of egg whites gives me 28g protein and 125 calories. 2 whole eggs (cooked) would give me around 12g protein but 142 calories.
Those you linked to are the exact ones I have. Not much dearer too... £1 eggstra (hehe ;)) than buying the eggs, but without the hassle.
BTW how come they are inferior?

Pasteurising them, in my opinion, destroys more of the nutrients in the yolk than if boiled, poached, scrambled, fried, etc. Not that the difference is huge of course. The main reason I think they would be inferior is if you cook pasteurised eggs, makes them far more nutrient sparse than regular eggs.
I also don't see why you are that worried about minor differences in calories, the yolk is far superior to the white anyway. All this ridiculous ******** you hear about people vilifying cholesterol and saturated fat is, frankly wrong and dangerous. The eatwell plate and the food pyramids are all ******** and they have it totally wrong. Cholesterol is good and saturated fat is very good for you. I don't see why you avoid milk, except maybe the carbs. There has been lots of anti-dairy stigma and it either applies to USA dairy or makes frankly ridiculous claims. I certainly think that if you can get milk from traditional breeds of cattle like Jersey, Guernsey etc there is no problem as they produce A2 casein which is the non problematic one.

I eat 4 whole eggs daily: the yolk and the whites. I cook those and eat it all. I have no problem at all with the yolks, I prefer the whites but I don't dislike them. It's just I drink the whites with the whey as it's high protein and fairly low calories: adding the yolks in would be extra added calories, it would make it taste different and have a different consistency and it'd be a pain in the arse for me measuring it all. Regarding the fat/cholesterol in eggs, I know, there have been studies on this and many found that carbs were the big problem. People eat way too many carbs, and in the end if these carbs are not used they will end up as fat. No milk atm due to carbs, I am on a very very low carb diet (not atkins but similar), if you disagree with the atkins diet then spare me the info, I've read up and deem it safe myself. It's 10x healthier than the **** I used to eat.
I'm eating lots of eggs, cheese, chicken, beef, some salad, whey protein with liquid egg whites, few peanuts and a bit of peanut butter. Of course, taking multivits, which I never did before. My regular diet was along the lines of cereal, crisps, chocolate, sandwich, pizza, chips and coke. Nothing good there at all.

Don't worry, whilst I think Atkins isn't that great I am atm on a very low carb/zerocarb path. Talking 0g of carbs to 10/15g of carbs whilst eating around 3.5k calories. Appetite goes down on a low carb diet lol. I'm adding milk back in to the tune of say 1/2 a gallon, because I'm back on stronglifts which is a linear progression strength program like Rippetoe's Starting Strength and milk is an excellent drink. You could say it's Paleo + Dairy minus all fruits and veg.

The problem I find with the Atkins diet is what it says. It says that you can eat as much fat & as many calories as you want... which is bull. If you only need 2500 calories per day to main weight, then eating 3000 is gonna make you put on fat - the reason they say this however is because all of the fats/proteins supposedly suppress your appetite, hence you won't eat as much. Ah right I see, I'm currently cutting and am on around 2000 calories per day, lots of protein, quite a bit of fat and less than 25g of carbs per day. A week Sunday I am having a cheat meal (or two :P) so that'll be nice... gonna try and make chicken nuggets from chicken breast and cheese, you can supposedly make it with that and some eggs, may as well give it a try... my makeshift omelette turned out lovely! :D

I think calories are a guideline and no more, when following a low carb diet I think things change. Considering the major hormonal changes that happen when on vlc/zc I don't think you can say: You will maintain on this amount of calories. Yes they are a worthwhile guideline but not necessarily correct. I'm eating more carbs now from milk, since I'm sort of paleo/carnivore+dairy including lots of milk (not just for the carbs, I believe muscle building/strength gains on zero carb can be fantastic but because it is perfect for someone looking to get bigger/stronger due to the cell growth it triggers). I avoid all grains, sugars, fruit, most veg etc etc.. Fibre is bad imo, simply turns your gut into a fermentation plant and damages the colon+lining.
