View Full Version : Maths question + exam yesterday
Yeah it was in the exam yesterday. How many sides would a regular polygon have if the interior angles were all 163. Meaning external were 12?
I think i got the right answer, as did a few of my friends but we all found the paper hard which is weird since we're meant to be top 10% of people in the country. Grades will be low on that paper i would guess. How did you find it and did you take the higher or lower? and was lower a nice paper?
Keri?!

I took higher, I didn't understand that question, I think i got something stupid like 288 LOL
I don't remember going through that in maths lessons so yeahhh.
I think I got the last question though cause I got the same as all the clever people 8)

What exam board did you sit? I sat the OCR non-calculator higher and it was possibly the easiest paper I've sat in my life :P

It's not that hard. Basically what you do is use the formula 180(n-2) = xn, where n is the number of sides and x is the interior angle. So in this case, your x is 163. Then it's just algebra...
180(n-2) = 163n
180n-360 = 163n
17n-360 = 0
17n = 360
n = 21.2
But since you can't have a polygon with 21.2 sides, the answer is 21. Reason for the decimal is the interior angle has been rounded up to 163. The actual interior angle for a regular polygon with 21 sides is 162.9, which was rounded to 163 in the question.
By the way, the exterior angle of the polygon is 17, not 12. Interior angle + exterior angle = 180

sorry the exterior was 12 so the interior must have been 168
I can't remember a thing from high school maths.

Same formula:
180(n-2) = 168n
180n-360 = 168n
12n-360 = 0
12n = 360
n = 30
