Pads?
Tampons?
Either or?
Double up with a pad and a tampon?
menstrual cup? (what brand?)
bleach free tampons?
reusable pads?
Freebleed?
Something I'm missing?

If you're a guy, what does your girlfriend do?

Does that mean you don't use a tampon/pad.. if so, thats ******* gross. NOBODY should do that +o(

And the girls i know use tampons. been shopping with a few of 'em.

Well, some people do freebleed. I was reading something the other day about a girl who on her first day, she uses a menstrual cup or a pad, and then the rest of the 3 days, she doesn't use anything. How? She has a VERY light flow. She said that she just goes to the loo every hour or so and wipes and the most mess she's ever had is a slight smear. So, whatever works for her hey. I know that there are some women who are heavier and use nothing, sometimes at night- so they choose to sleep on towels and stuff instead. *shrugs* their choice, not something I want to do but I promise you they're not walking around grossing people out- you wouldn't know.

I'm switching to a cup.
I usually use pads, occasionally tampons depending on the activity I'm doing but lately, I can't change as often, so I have to double up (tampon, and pad for leakage purposes) and oh gosh it makes me feel horrible. So a cup seems a better option for me right now! They've only been around in the current form for 10 years (current form being made out of medical grade silicone rather than latex), but they were invented in the 30s. Didn't catch on because gasp! You have to touch yourself! And tampon companies took over with advertising, and now they won't advertise (big bucks) in magazines that talk about the Alternatives such as cups, which would totally ruin their reputation... so it's been on the down low. Still, I guess tampons didn't catch on for 10 years or more either. Everyone thought they were disgusting. So, that's why no one's heard of cups until the past... three or so years I guess. Takes a while for word of mouth.

thats the thing, you see all kind of advertisements for U tampons (in australia anyway) because they are "super slim and sexy" etc.. never heard of these cups things.. but i imagine something like this |_| where you put it in (sorry for being so blunt) and it just kinda fills up, like a cup under a sink +o(. not my cuppa tea, mate.

i can't use tampons (would probably get lost up me ;l joke) because i get really bad cramp, as in i often can't even get out of bed or keep any food down and they make it worse >.> thankfully my period only lasts 3 days with the 3rd day being hardly anything (lucky me) so i just use pads but i used to use tampons the first two days and pad the 3rd day.

i dont mind talking about my period lol, i welcome it. lets me know everthings working fine (and that im not pregnant....) plus gives me an excuse to skive and curl up with a hot water bottle n chocolate, oo ye(H)

This video explains it in a non graphic way. It looks big but it folds up. Yes, it goes inside the girl, and creates a sort of seal around the edges, it fills up (you can leave it there for 12 hours! This is amazing, because you have to change tampons maximum of 8 hours but usually women have to change every 2 or so, because they overflow. This, it most likely won't overflow! Yayyyy no annoying toilet trips!)

Well, something else that's turning me off of tampons is the bleach and chemicals! That can't be good to put inside you. They're perfumed for goodness sakes. And the fibres that stick inside you! And how it dries you out. Cups don't do that (bonus for the boyfriends. I know so many girls who are just turned off straight afterwards because they're hurting). Also since they're reusable (yeah get it over with, say ew. You wash them and whatnot, it's fine), it saves hundreds of dollars a year, and stops the 10,000 pads/tampons women use in a lifetime from building up in a dump or sewer somewhere.

Lots of benefits for very little inconvenience.

Anyway, I'm hyped up about the idea.

I promise, I'm not a saleswoman, but lots of people have been saying that the cups help with cramps, because of the mild suction. Maybe it'd be worth a try. Also they say that the chemicals often add to cramps. I'm sorry to hear you're in so much pain! Do you have a wheatsack?

Why are you posting threads about periods all of a sudden?

Long story. First, I was asking questions that'd help me in my research for an article I'm writing about sex ed/puberty ed, for a teacher's website. Then I was thinking and got curious what girls here used. Two threads.

Although I'm a guy and have no real evidence-backed opinion, the idea of the menstrual cup is revolting to me - yet, obviously, i'm sure many women use them regularly with ease.

If it helps you at all to know, my girlfriend uses pads and always has.

Doubling up: Using a tampon, but wearing a pad as well because you're not confident in the tampon's abilities (I know I've never been that confident in them... very rarely do I just wear a tampon).

Menstrual cup: I explained it already, but it's a silicone (very flexible) cup you wear internally like a tampon, that hasn't got all the nasty chemicals and is a good alternative for many women. Lots of women around the world use them.

Bleach Free Tampons: Manufactured tampons that have been made with less nasty stuff in them such as bleach. Less chance of TSS and allergic reactions, more biodegradable.

Cloth pads: Modern cloth pads are nothing like the ones your grandmother wore. They even have wings, and are absorbant, many have a plastic backing just like your ordinary pads... the difference is, at the end of your cycle you chuck them in the washing machine and reuse them the next month. Better for the environment and reportedly feels better on your bits. There's quite a movement towards these three options. (bleach free, menstrual cups, and cloth pads.).

Cups are no more revolting than tampons in my opinion, but yeah I used to be grossed out by the idea. It's taken me a few years for the idea to grow on me, now I'm wondering why I was so stupid. It's just a teaspoon of blood, and it's clean. Bacteria doesn't grow on silicone.

ahaha parody moon cup.
Mooncup is just one brand. There's mooncup (UK and US brands with the same name but different products), Divacup, Keeper (made out of latex rather than silicone), Lunette, Fleurcup, Yuuki, and quite a few more. Then there's the 'insteads' which are disposable and sit totally differently (up near the girl's cervix like a diaphram) buuuut which mean that you can have sex on your period without making a mess.

I just had my third month with a menstrual cup and I have to say it was completely awesome.
