It is much easier saying 'sovereign state' because thats a real country by the definition. The United Kingdom is a sovereign state, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are not. The Netherlands is a sovereign state, Holland etc are not.

Officially it's name isn't Holland, and a lot of people within the Netherlands complain about this. Holland is the name for the Western Region of the Netherlands, like Kent is the South Eastern part of the UK (or England). England is a country and was only united with Scotland, as Scotland was formerly not a country, and Scotland and Ireland and Wales all have their own laws and their own country, however through the Union they share many laws and help each other out.

A list of sovereign states and the 'regions/countries' that make them up.
Widely recognized member of the UN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations). The Kingdom of the Netherlands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_the_Netherlands) consists of three countries which each enjoy a great amount of autonomy:

Holland is the name given to North and South Holland (Noord-Holland/Zuid-Holland). I used to think this until year 7 or 8 :P
As Stephen Fry said, "Holland is like calling England 'East Anglia'", however, North and South Holland are provinces, so they're technically both considered seperate regions, much like East Anglia, where East Anglia has Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk (and maybe Cambridge, can't remember).
Amsterdam is the capital, but Den Haag (The Hague) is where the power is, where the Queen works etc.
I know way too much about the Netherlands, but it's awesome so it's fine <3

Oh my God we've got a strange one boys - I said "of the country", that's not saying Holland... Let me put it in lame man terms (re-written):
"Holland is the name given to the western reach of the Netherlands."
If I meant Holland, it would come out like this:
"Holland is the name given to the western reach of Holland."
^ Above makes no sense, which you're suggesting is what I'm trying to say :P
Country = The Netherlands
Western Reach = Holland
I'm shocked you're so confused :P

Britain/United Kingdom is the country, England/Scotland/Wales/N.I. are the regions that make it up.
And I didn't know Holland was a region, I thought it was a country aswell.Britain is the name of the island which most of the UK is on. Plus a region is something like the "East Midlands" not England.
The United Kingdom is the sovereign state which is made up of constituent countries, England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The word "Country" is a silly word to throw around, as it could define both England and also the UK.
Holland is a region of the Netherlands which is a constituent country of the sovereign state which is the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

It's not like England at all. Strictly speaking Holland is just a Western region of the Netherlands but it's universally accept to informally refer to the whole of the Netherlands as 'Holland'. Pretty sure they're all Dutch regardless
Dunno if this was already said, assed? :P

the capital of holland? loooooool
Amsterdam is the capital of the county of Amstel (I think) and the capital of the Netherlands.
The Hague is the capital of the county of Noord-Holland and the city where the government is.
Rotterdam is the capital of the county of Zuid-Holland and is where a lot of ferrys and boats port.
It's the same principal here:
Norwich = Norfolk
Ipswich = Suffolk
Chelmsford = Essex
Leicester = Leicestershire :P
And read the sentence boy! It clearly says after the comma (,) "the three main cities anyone ever hears of", because they're all in that area known as Holland, with the exception of Amsterdam, though it's county/province is surrounded by Noord-Holland :P
Probably because their football kit is bright orange innit.

Same thing really, the country's color is definitely orange :P The Royal Family is no doubt where that idea comes from, seeing as it's always been the House of Orange :P
