View Full Version : Prefix in Music forum

when making a new thread in music, i think their should be a prefix for what genre of music they are discussing is (pop, rock, country, club etc)

this way people will know what the context of the thread is before clicking on something that might not be of intrest to them

Thread closed by Nicola (Forum Super Moderator): To avoid further arguments and the issue seems to have been resolved.

Agreed. Would be pointless to be honest :)

what he said.
to satisfy everyone, there would have to be so many prefixes that it wouldn't be worth it.

The amount of pre-fixes that would have to be created is just too much. You may as well keep as it is to be honest! I doubt people would even use them that much either.

you wouldn't have to include them all, perhaps 5 basic ones that cover most genres

It's a nice idea in a way but a bit impractical. As has been said there are dozens of different genres but at the same time, pretty much every thread would end up prefixed 'Pop' or 'RnB' and it's pretty easy to tell from thread titles anyway.

Prefixes are most effective when there are fairly few. For instance, the TV & Film forum is a great example because I go there mainly to check out movie threads so I can immediately see all the movie-related threads. But if there were loads of different prefixes they would just look too cluttered and it would defeat the object.

There aren't actually that many genres it's just people (mostly metal fans..) make up genres so they can sound more obscure and cool. Still too many to have prefixes for though, and there aren't enough threads in the music section to suggest that you can't just have a look in them to check anyway

There are LOADS of different genre's/

Christian Rock for example.

That would be rock.

Irrespective of what FJ has said, there are far too many genres to get a prefix on them.

Even if we had:
Rock
Pop
RnB
Urban
Dance
Other

People will always argue how their genre should be a separate category especially as something as personal as music. Thanks for the feedback never the less.

Edit: off-topic but christian rock has more of a pop than a rock sound maybe call it "Indie-rock".

Then all the indie benders would complain. *~NeVeR~*~eNdInG~*~cYcLe~*

That would be rock.

But it wouldn't work. Since you get hard/heavy/soft/other types of rock.

And I am a huge fan of Modern Rock and Hard Rock (2nd and 3rd Era), but I couldn't give a monkeys about some other kinds of rock.

But tbh most things posted in the music forum are bands or artists most people recognise anyway.

This is what I meant by people making up too many different genres that don't need to exist. Genre discussion aside though, prefixes still aren't necessary when the music section here is as (in)active as it currently is

What do you mean 'dont need to exist'?

Yeah, as previously stated, it's a nice idea, but not only are there a hell of a lot of different genres, I can't see people using them that often, also due to the fact that some members may not necessarily know which genre the song in question fits into. :P

I mean that if a band has a certain sound to it but still falls within the "rock" genre it should be perfectly acceptable to just call them a rock band (and let their music identify them instead of a random word) rather than inventing specific names. I don't talk about my various rap music as acid, NY mafioso, crunk, conscious, g-funk and all other things I could break them down as, so I don't see why it needs doing for any other type of music.

But unlike other genres, all rap sounds the same; crap.

And what about jazz? Jazz has such a HUGE variety

Fgs stop arguing about genres. I can pretty much guarantee half the threads would be incorrectly prefixed anyway

Oh quote me where I said that was a fact? I think a -rep for my opinion is a tad sad. And in future at least quote the whole post.

The way you wrote it was not as an opinion, you were stating it as though it was actually an important detail to consider. For your ignorance I think a -rep is perfectly acceptable, especially considering the quality of certain genres was never part of the discussion and has no bearing on the actual topic.
Furthermore I didn't need to quote the whole post because I wasn't replying to all of it, I think that much is obvious.

There is NOTHING wrong with posting some things that don't add to the discussion, as long as part of your post does (fyi the bottom bit does xx)

And I never intended o put it across as fact, you just interpreted it like that.
