Don't mean to be creating gruesome threads with younger members about but this question came to mind after the other day.
We were walking to Asda to get stuff for our BBQ for the England v USA game and this cat ran out from a drive-way sized gap in the wall straight into the road and went underneath a passing car. It ran back out and seemed OK at first but died a few moments later.
More graphic detail in spoiler
I don't think it went under the wheels - it got into the road just in front of the car and went under the front bumper inbetween the wheels and got hit by the stuff on the underside of the car, then ran out from the side of the car back through the wall it came from. But then it was running weirdly so you could tell it was badly hurt and then it just ran to a corner and lay down in a sort of fit before dying a few seconds later. It obviously had bad internal injuries because it was bleeding from the mouth and didn't make any sounds throughout the whole thing other than gasps for air as if it had been winded.
Was terribly sad though. The moment it started running towards the road, I could hear a car coming from behind me and I knew exactly what was going to happen but I sort of froze and it was all over in literally a second and we were all just standing there in shock. Also the driver slowed down once he realised he'd ran over something but didn't stop - to be fair it is likely he never saw the cat at all, but still I reckon it was obvious from the way we all stopped still and I had my hands on my head in shock lol.
Only other time I've seen an animal hit by a vehicle was a little dog which ran into a road but the car was going quite slowly and it just got hit by the bumper and the car stopped. The dog just rolled over and was fine and ran back down the road it came from :P
Anyone else had any similar experiences?
When we first got our dog, still a puppy - my mum was at the other side of the road when I opened the door. The gate was still open and she shot out the house and accross the road. At the same time, a 4 wheel drive was driving down the street. We all screamed obviously and once the car had gone, she was just there.. curled up in a little ball. Luckily she was fine, just a little shook up. I mean, it's not the same as seeing an animal die from it, but I'm pretty sure the first part is the same. Feeling helpless as a car driving over her.

Yeah the helplessness, exactly. Did it touch her or just go over and frighten her?

i hit a pigeon on the way back from scotland if that counts

Yeah, the feeling was awful. I was only young and can still remember it.
Lucky she was so small and the car was so big, so it didn't touch her thank god. Even though it frightened her, she still loved the car! :D

I've hit a rabbit by accident once. It got hit by something underneath rather than the front bumper. When I checked the underneath of the car, the back bumper has a solid metal plate so it's amazing the bit that clearly hit the rabbit didn't slice it up :S Not very pleasant. Must be horrible seeing a cat get hit :(

Yeah that's what happened to the cat - not the bumper or the wheels but something underneath.

My lil cat was hit. He is so stupid though, he just lies in the middle of the road, no joke, and if we see him i have to go out and get him off the road, once he was going across the road and this car came right round the corner, he tried to jumped out of the way but it just clipped his back end. It spun him around a few times, but he was totally fine. :P
i saw a pigeon get merked by a car he didnt even slow down but he got smashed into the front bumper went under and feathers went everywhere and he waddled back to the path lol

A little mouse got squished by a car one time when I was walking to college. You could proper hear the squelch sound as well. Pretty disgusting. It was flat as a pancake after that.
I've also seen a pigeon get hit by a train. It was one of those fast trains that doesn't stop at every station. Two pigeons were on the railway and one of them just didn't fly away in time. It pretty much exploded when the train hit it. Instant death. Feathers everywhere.

I havn't seen anything being hit but my dog got hit by a car. Quite funny in the sense of he was bleeding loads but he was happy as hell :P He lived until he got cancer like 7 years later. :(

I was in the car when we hit a big bird once. My mother said "it was probably trying to get across the road to its babies. They'll starve now."
Traumatic for a 7 year old!

I saw a really nice bird get ran over on Christmas a few years back. It was in the middle of the road being attacked by magpies so we stopped the car and my mum was about to run out to go get it, but a car went before she could and ran it over. :(

When i was younger, my dad was going a good old 40 miles per hour on a road (which was the speed limit) and a cat came and sat there right in front of him but while we were going fast, we didn't stop in time and accidentally ran him over so we had to take him to the RSPCA but he died before he got there.

I haven't seen it, but I have seen the result. It was a poor, black and white kitty with a tag on her, so she was obviously a pet. She lay on the road, like 2d flat & then a school bus nearly run over it. It was terrible.

I didn't hit it but I was driving home, and I was doing 60mph down a steep hill (it was a national speed limit road) and a badger ran out in front of me. I've never seen a badger before and this thing was huuuuge it looked like a small dog. I've slammed on my brakes (bearing in mind im doing 60...down a hill) my brakes are squealing and I though I was going to hit it and it's going to seriously damage my car. Luckily the squeal scared the badger and it ran out the road just in time.
Slightly shaken up!

Yeah my dog got run over by a car. I was looking out the window so I saw it all and I heard him like screaming and crying when the car ran over him, it was the most awful feeling ever. He had to be put down :(

Me and my mum were driving back from somewhere and there was a cat just lying at the side of the road that looked like it had only just been hit by a car a few in front of us (if that makes sense). It's neck was clearly broken and there was blood oozing out on to the road, it was horrible :(

i seen sum1 throw a pigeon under a bin man truck if tht counts
Woahh that looks like a hawk or something?? :P
I'd probably cry if it was a hawk. It was a Starling. The funny thing is I was driving along and it crossed my path, there was a burst of feathers and so I pulled over a) to shut the screaming (female) friends in the car up and b) to check there was no blood / guts / feathers on the car. There was literally nothing and I couldn't see the dead bird anywhere. The next day I wake up and start driving about and then when I pulled up at my friend's house she came out and was like, erm.. dead bird? Somehow it had got caught inside the grill and had obviously worked its way out as I was driving about.

I've seen a cat dragged under a bus and then dragged further for a good few feet before it's mangled carcass came to a halt in the middle of the road. I can't remember if anyone moved it or not but the blood trail remained for several days. To make matters worse it was a really hot day and EVERYONE was out enjoying the sunshine which only added to the horrible event, I couldn't hear myself thinking for my next door neighbour screaming.

My Dog escaped, ran across the road where another Dog was barking at him, he got hit by a car at about 30 MPH knocking him a few meters along the ground. Then he panicked and tried to run back, he got hit by another car but the problem was he was looking at us when he got hit the second time so I think he thought we'd done it. He then ran all the way down the road and we had to chase him. We eventually got him back and there wasn't a single scratch on him, he got home and started trying to play with his ball. Very weird.

Not quite but a while ago, whilst I was at the Vets, a woman came in with a screaming cat. The cat had just been run over, the woman spotted it on the edge of the road and she couldn't bear leaving it to limp off. It was such a horrible sound, hearing an animal in agnoy too. It looked really bad and in the end it had to be put down... so sad. :( I couldn't actually imagine seeing an animal being hit, how horrible.
