One of these would do: USB to IDE/SATA adapter

So would one end fit into my hard drive and the other into the USB socket, or am I missing something obvious?

Should do, yes. The one I linked to is one of the cheapest on eBay. You might want to get a more expensive one as some come with a power adapter as well (what this is for I don't know, possibly for 3.5" HDDs or faster transfer rate).

It'll be for 3.5" drives :) 2.5" don't need a power adaptor

So I won't need one with a power pack seeing as its a standard laptop hard drive?
Cheers :)
