Users report 'fault' on iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 integrates the antenna into the case
A number of users are reporting problems with their iPhone 4.
Apple's latest device went on sale on Wednesday, with hundreds of people queuing outside Apple's flagship store in central London for the launch.
The issue relates to the mobile phone signal, with users reporting a drop in signal strength when the phone is held.
The casing of Apple's latest phone is made of stainless steel, which also serves as its antenna.
Richard Warner, who bought his iPhone 4 on Wednesday morning, contacted BBC News, saying that he thought the phone was "useless in its current state".
"Apple have created a phone that has an antenna on the bottom left-hand side of the phone.
"This means that when you hold it in your left hand, the signal bars slowly fade until there is no signal," he wrote.
'Complaints'
A number of videos have been posted on video sharing site YouTube complaining about the reception issue.
One video had an American user running a speed test, with hands on and hands free.
In it, the user 'awington' says that, while holding the phone "it won't even run the test when I am holding the phone... once I let go, it makes a connection and runs the test.
"Hold it a second time, and the upload test will not start."
Social networking site Twitter was full of chatter, with numerous tweets on the reception problems.
The issue might stem from the way the integrated antenna is constructed. One section provides mobile reception, while another is for wi-fi.
Some users have speculated that touching the bottom of the phone bridges this gap, affecting signal strength.
However, it is not yet clear whether the problem affects all phones, or if the signal deteriorates when the phone is making a call or only when held in standby mode.
When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone 4 at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, he described the integrated antenna as "really cool engineering".
Apple has yet to make a comment on the current controversy surrounding the latest version of its popular phone.

Hope they have to replace them all so the missing $$$'s in their account will make them take care and not just churn these out.

It's not been a great start for the 4, which is a shame, because my dad's arrived this afternoon and it's gorgeous.
Hmm, maybe its a good thing I didn't get one today then.
I had wondered about whether or not this fault would happen or not when the new design of the antenna was revealed at the keynote.

*strokes his Android phone*
This is pretty impressive of Apple, the last iPhones didn't have any major issues like this. I've never heard of a phone that has yellow blotches appear on many of the final products 40 minutes after use (average) either, so it makes you wonder what on earth they were doing. It's not just one issue, but about three I calculate - blotches, dodgy signal when holding the phone and something about the screen cutting parts off. A dreadful release for the iPhone, and of any phone. Apple sure like doing things differently :P
Besides, a great joke has come out about this:
"I heard that one of the chief designers of the Apple iPhone 4 antenna got married recently. The service was great but the reception was terrible."

Lol, +Rep.
I hadn't heard of any of these faults but it definitely is weird for apple. I normally think of good quality, design and long lasting products when i think of them, definitely makes me glad I didn't get one. Ill just wait till they come out on pay as you go, hopefully they'll have it fixed by then.

Serves them right for making slave labour make their products :)

To be fair to Apple Foxconn are now paying way above average.

The main word there being NOW ;)
They've put the yellow screen problem down to the manufacturing process.

Indeed, something about glue needing to dry... I've never heard of a company chuck out their products like this, usually they delay for stuff like this, though it could be their excuse for not noticing. Apparently the antenna is a "software" issue, or what fanboys might be calling a software issue.

If you buy one of them overpriced official cases from Apple, that signal problem is like not there any more. (I think)
Although Apple said they will be offering a fix or something, probably to show the bars.

What they did in the past was awful but surely you judge a company by what it does now rather than what it did in the past? The fact is Apple has now pressured Foxconn to pay their workers quite well (well by Chinese standards :))

Apple always knew about the wages, they just didn't give a **** until it became big news. Corporate greed makes me sick.

It's only a problem when it becomes a problem, as they say :P Many companies do this, though it's not always exploitation :/

Foxconn wasn't slave labour, it paid above average, the conditions were generally good and believe it or not, the suicide rate was very slow. I also think it's unfair to dump the blame on Apple, let's not forget Foxconn also make Motorola and Nokia phones, as well as the Microsoft Xbox 360, PS2 and PS3 for Sony, Intel Motherboards, Nintendo Wii, Dell computers and HP computers.
Another problem with the iPhone is if you drop it from a very small height it will shatter like no other phone, and not only that but Apple have failed to make part replacements available to Apple stores yet so little can be done about it. 'tis very fragile. I hope they sort it out for their customers soon enough, if they wish to charge such premiums for their products they're really going to have to prove themselves in how they handle this.

Makes me laugh, this has already proven to be a SOFTWARE BUG. It happens on iPhone 3G/3GS's too. Apple are *apparently* releasing iOS 4.0.1 soon to fix the issue.

Apple mentioned any more news on the fix? Last time I heard it was this:
"Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone."

*Apparently* someone phoned up Apple and asked about the problem and the rep on the phone said there may be a fix (iOS 4.0.1) as early as this Monday. As seen above its proven to be an OS bug, there is videos all over youtube regarding it - That's what I read on an Apple/Techie blog anyway.
