family of benefit cheats who owned a property portfolio worth £1.5million were today jailed for fraudulently claiming £170,000 in housing allowances.The complex scam involved eight members of the Pathmanathan family, some of who drove Porsche and BMW sports cars.
One member of the family would apply for a mortgage, often using false information, and then rent the house to a relative.

The tenant would hide then fact they were related to their supposed landlord and claim housing benefit on the property, which was funnelled straight into mortgage repayments.
The Pathmanathans even drew up bogus tenancy agreements to try and hide the fact they were ripping off taxpayers.

Four members of the family were jailed yesterday for their part in the fraud. Three were given suspended sentences and another will be sentenced next month at Harrow Crown Court.

Glad they got caught but I bet there are loads more like them... the Government is tightening its belt with cuts here and there, the ones I'm surprised at are the cuts in the police force... keep the police and send them after people like this!

I have started to think that now with the benefits system concerning younger people, you should have to contribute for at least 10 years before you can take out of it - the same should apply for immigrants/asylum seekers arriving to the United Kingdom. To take out of something you should have to put in. The benefits system is an absolute mess as it stands, a complicated system thats too generous and easy to bend.

I don't mean to sound racist, but why the **** are most benefit cheats LIKE THIS who rip our country out of BILLIONS of pounds are year either Asians or foreigners? I know it would be naive of me to say that no white English people did it, but the most of what you hear in the media about scams like these is mainly by Asian families/East Europeans.

Even little things, like all the Asian kids at my school who's parents have BMWs and Lexus's all claim EMA? how does that work out?

This country is ******, benefits should be cut hugely, and should only count to people who were born/grew up in Britain.

I know white people who do the same! It's where their parents own a business but they earn hardly anything for tax reasons.

The number I expect would be quite high, it isnt mainly media spin. Afterall we do have one million(?) illegal immigrants in this country so goodness knows how many legal immigrants are milking the benefits and welfare systems despite never having put a pennys piece into this country before.

I knw more whities who are benefit frauds than any other nationality, race or skin colour :/ Hopefully the benefits review will overhaul aload of these people. You'd literally have to be on the verge of a poor quality of life or be physically and mentally disabled to be okay for benefits. Some people do not need them and the blue/disability badge scheme is one that comes to mind that can easily be abused, though not necessarily a waste of money.
