Ryanair is planning to run flights where passengers stand during the journey at a cost of just £5 per ticket.

Michael O'Leary, the airline's chief executive, will set out proposals today that include charging customers to use the loo.

A standing area with "vertical seats" will be introduced at the back of its fleet of 250 planes.

He said that charging customers £1 to make use of facilities would encourage travellers on one-hour flights to use lavatories at the airport instead of on the aircraft.

The Irishman said he intended to introduce coin-operated loos and added: "The other change we've been looking at is taking out the last 10 rows of seats so we will have 15 rows of seats and the equivalent of 10 rows of standing area."

A Ryanair spokesman said that Boeing had been consulted over refitting the fleet with "vertical seats" which would allow passengers to be strapped in while standing up, which would cost between £4 and £8 per person.
Safety testing will be carried out next year.

However, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority said the plans would struggle to meet safety requirements.

He said: "It's aviation law that people have to have a seat belt on from take-off and landing so they would have to be in a seat. I don't know how Mr O'Leary would get around that one. During turbulence passengers also have to have a seat belt on."

Mr O'Leary was interviewed for ITV's ‘How to Beat the Budget Airlines’ which airs on Thursday night at 7.30pm.

I think it is only on short haul flights, e.g dosmestic ones. Or ones that last less that like 1 hour.

Haha.... This will never pass CAA/EASA/JAA safety requirements... I think someone's having a bit of a laugh there.

i doubt that, the only flights that are less that 1 hour are those that withiun the UK and possibly amsterdam & northern france - basically not enough flights i.e pointless

The video said it'd only be on flights less than an hour. Ryanair has quite a few domestic flights like that.

Don't you have to sit down for taking off/landing?

Technically, you just need to be wearing a seatbelt..

It'll never be the price they've put it as, you're charged more for everything. Food, baggage, how you pay & choosing to sit with one another will all be factors that change the price.

I think the cabin crew would ask you to sit down if you stood up with a seat belt strapped around you..? Of course you need to be sat down.

You're hardly gonna' die just because you're stood up (you lean against something).

Of course this won't pass health and safety, but it had good intentions :P

I hate RyanAir as an airline so much. They come up with some stupid ideas like "£1 to use the toilet" and this story has been rumored/announced/whatever for quite some time. I would rather sit down on any flight, no matter how short or long it was.

I would, it's only standing up for a while...

To be honest if they did somehow manage to get this through health and safety (which they won't) then I would use it for short flights - I've been standing for longer on a train before it's not that difficult. Still, I can't see it happening

hah

The difference is though, a train follows a set of tracks. An aircraft takes off at a good amount of speed and also travels at fast speed and if you hit any turbulence, surely it would be better if you are sat down in a seat.

I'd go straight to Amsterdam or the closest flight to Holland if this £5 badboy flight comes in.

If an airline is making shortcuts like--removing seats--I wouldn't feel comfortable flying with them for other reasons!

I would hate standing on a long flight, wouldn't mind a short journey though. But next we'll most likely have convertable planes!

Colin-Roberts

there already is "convertible" planes , they just cant fly at a high altitude. I'd pay $5 to stand on a short flight, cheaper then gas

I wouldn't do it on my first ever trip on an plane, but in the future I wouldn't mind going anywhere, the good thing you get out of it is a cheap flight and a lovely holiday

oh boy.Oh I don't mind if it's something like that, although no doubt it would be a nightmare if you were claustrophobic. If it saves me a bit of money it won't be too bad and I doubt it'll be that uncomfortable, it's just it'll be far more than £5 once it comes down to it. Try being sandwiched on the London Underground during rush hour and trying not to fall over like dominoes once the train comes to a stop. Baggage, airport fees, credit card fees, check-in fees, it all adds up. For instance I found some "free" BMI Baby flights the other day, £41 with taxes + charges, £25 for baggage and £15 to check-in, not even close to being free.
