i quit at the end of last year after 4/5 years
first week was fine
2nd + 3rd week was hell:'(
anyway i do believe cold turkey is best way to go, it was most successful anyway so you're one step there:8 what i did was have loads of lollipops/peanuts with me and eat one everytime i was hungry. gum was never effective for me. at home i'd brush my teeth after eating (when i most likely wanted a smoke) and that helped me. same as drinking loads of water because it leaves a much better taste ... obviously:P
and staying away from alcohol for the first few weeks as it makes me want to smoke more, never understood why people ONLY smoke while drinking, it makes the next morning worse for me personally so there's an advantage.
just gotta find your own way really

A really good way which I reckon would work is that you take your money you were going to buy cigarettes with and stick it in a jar, and do this every time you feel like buying cigarettes. Over time you'll realise how much money your wasting and this money could then be used for a holiday (and tbh, wouldn't take long with the price of cigs these days).
You could always find an alternative, such as chocolate
Just try not to go around other people that smoke 'cos that is the worst thing when your trying to quit!

The NHS SmokeFree service has worked wonders for a lot of people I know, it can provide you with a lot of useful information along with help on finding your local NHS stop smoking service.
http://smokefree.nhs.uk/
The NHS can also provide you with a "Quit Kit" which contains lots of advice and information, as well as other things which can tackle stress, it's free so I recommend you get one of these.

yh i didn't smoke b4 but this is what my dad did a couple of months ago (he's been smokin since he was 12 and he's now 60)
he basically just cut down like he used to smoke one after another all day.
one the first day he had a *** then started to do something like facebook where he's typing with two hands etc. then after about 2 hours he'd have another and so on. after a week of that he tried having like 5 a day then cutting dwn etc etc etc. he's on 1 a day atm so it does it ages but to say he's been smoking for ages it looks gd.
