SAN ANTONIO - A Texas mother accused of decapitating and eating her 3 1/2-week-old son screamed "I didn't mean to do it. He told me to" while her sister pleaded for an ambulance to bring help in a desperate four-minute 911 call released Wednesday.

Otty Sanchez, who police say told them the devil made her kill and mutilate her only child, screams "I love him" and says she's stabbed herself in the heart and stomach while her sister tries calming down the 33-year-old mother.

At one point during the frantic call, Priscilla Garcia tries reassuring her sister that she is actually in the house.

"I'm not dead, Otty. I'm standing right here talking to you," Garcia said.

After a dispatcher tells Garcia that an ambulance is on the way, the sister moans, "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God."

Sanchez is charged with capital murder in the slaying of Scott Wesley Buchholz-Sanchez , who authorities found decapitated and grossly mutilated in a bedroom of her sister's house early Sunday. Police say Sanchez chewed off three of her infant's toes and ate parts of the brain.

Garcia tells the dispatcher that her sister has stabbed her child and that blood is all over the bed.

"She's gone crazy last night. She was hearing voices," Garcia said. "She kept bringing me the baby. Finally she calmed down and I took her back the baby. And now I just woke up to hear screaming.

"The baby is dead. The baby's dead. Please, somebody come."

Sanchez is being held on $1 million bond. It was not immediately clear Wednesday whether she had an attorney.

Scott W. Buchholz, the infant's father, said Sanchez suffered from postpartum depression and that she told him she was schizophrenic a week before the slaying. Buchholz, who said he is also schizophrenic, said he wants her to receive the death penalty.

A family member has said Sanchez had been undergoing psychiatric treatment and that a hospital called looking for her several months ago. Gloria Sanchez, the mother's aunt, said her niece had been "in and out of a psychiatric ward."

In May 2008, Otty Sanchez's mother, Manuela Sanchez, called police after her daughter didn't return from a trip to Austin, saying she was concerned about her daughter's safety. Manuela Sanchez told police she suspected her daughter was into drugs and specifically told police she wasn't suffering from any mental issues.

An eye for an eye doesn't always work... I wouldn't give her the death penalty, her life will be over quicker...
I'd lock her up for the rest of her life so she get's what she deserves slowly yet more painfully.

Mom who mutilated newborn enters plea

By Craig Kapitan - Express-News
Web Posted: 07/01/2010 6:33 CDT

A San Antonio mother who gained national attention after killing and mutilating her newborn son was found not guilty by reason of insanity Thursday and ordered to stay at a maximum-security mental facility.

State District Judge Raymond Angelini ordered the indefinite confinement at the conclusion of a brief hearing in which prosecutors and the defense agreed to waive a jury trial for Otty Sanchez, 33, who was charged with capital murder.

Defense attorney Ed Camara provided reports from three psychologists who determined Sanchez was insane. Prosecutors didn't contest the findings.

Sanchez was arrested after police found the mutilated body of 3-week-old Scott W. Buchholz Sanchez — known as “Baby Scotty” — inside Sanchez's Wayside Drive home on July 26, 2009.

Wednesday would have been the baby's first birthday.

Sanchez, who had already been diagnosed with schizophrenia, told authorities she had been hearing voices. She thought the killing was necessary to prevent an apocalypse, her attorney said.

To be found legally insane, the judge had to agree with psychologists that Sanchez could not tell right from wrong at the time of the slaying. The judge made his ruling after about five minutes of reviewing the reports in his chambers.

“Bye, Otty,” said Scott Buchholz Sr., the infant's father, as Sanchez was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs and blue jail scrubs.

“Bye. I love you,” she responded.

The father then held the hand of Sanchez's mother and told her to “stay strong.” Manuela Sanchez thanked him as they stood holding hands for a moment.

“I'm glad my daughter is getting a second chance at life,” Manuela Sanchez said through tears outside the courtroom. “I'm sorry my grandson didn't get that chance.”

Otty Sanchez will be brought back before the judge within 30 days, after psychologists at the North Texas State Hospital Vernon facility evaluate her mental competency again, Camara said. After that, her case will be reviewed annually by the judge.

The Vernon facility is the same place authorities initially sent Houston mother Andrea Yates, who garnered national media attention in 2001 for the drowning of her five young children.

Like Yates, Sanchez could later be sent to a lower-security facility. But it's unlikely Sanchez will ever be deemed mentally fit to be released into society, her attorney said outside the courtroom.

“I don't think realistically this is ever the type of thing that can be cured,” Camara said.

Sanchez has been distraught about the death, Camara said, adding that he was worried how she would react as Baby Scotty's first birthday approached.

“But the combination of this proceeding and knowing she's no longer facing the death penalty helped her get through yesterday,” he said.

Mental competency was always an issue prosecutors were considering, District Attorney Susan Reed said Thursday. Reed said she could not think of any other incidents in San Antonio during her tenure that were “as psychotic as this.”

But prosecutors had to go through the process, including charging Sanchez with capital murder and conducting multiple psychiatric evaluations, the district attorney said.

“It is a horrendous, horrific offense,” Reed said. “But there is no question of (Sanchez's mental state). Like people say, you'd have to be insane to do what this woman did.”

Well i'll give you that for American prisons, but not for prisons over here - far from a tortuous experience and more like a holiday camp courtesy of the taxpayer. Personally i'd still prefer to have the likes of her hung.

Well Ian Huntley for one (you know the man who killed those two little girls?) has a gaming console - prisons nowdays also have gyms, televisions, radios and so forth. I know you on the left are keen on allowing offenders out early and maintain that prisons are tough places - they may be tough to you and me, but not to these people who have had a life of crime with barely two pennys to rub together.

It should be bare walls, no appliances and only an hour or two allowed out a day for exercise - unlike the photo above of a UK cell.

I didnt get drawn into the ins and outs of prisons, I merely said that in Texas this woman would get what she deserves.

Love the fact you've twisted it against myself.

She is really messed up. This is the most horrible thing i have ever read in my life. It was rather disturbing. But i kinda feel sorry for her, you could tell she didn't mean to do it, she was obviously mental and needed help.

I used to be for the Death Penalty for murder, but after we had this crime conference in our sixth form, a convicted murderer came in to talk to us (he was on lisence) but it really opened my eyes. It showed me how that sometimes things we don't see as murder, actually under the current law system is classed as murder and people like him should never deserve to be killed for what happened (Basically, a 50 year old man ran up to him naked and grabbed him. The guy then turned round a punched him to get him off him. The guy got charged with GBH but then 2 weeks later the naked guy was rushed to hospital and died. We all said it should be man slaughter as he didn't intend to kill the man, but he got sent down for murder) he was one of the nicest guys i have met and this is why i think the death penalty is wrong.

I agree with you. More often than not people don't look at the situation from a prisoner's perspective.

That is not cold blooded murder, that is genuine manslaughter and therefore I agree with you on that, the death penalty shouldn't be used in those cases. The man may be nice, Ian Huntley may very well be nice but he killed two little innocent girls in cold blood. I understand people morally dont agree with the death penalty which I cant argue with as its morals - but anyone who does use that argument i'd ask 'do you agree with abortion/euthanasia?' - because you either disagree with all three or agree with all three.

I agree with you. More often than not people don't look at the situation from a prisoner's perspective.

I doubt most people could give a damn whether the likes of Myra Hindley/Harold Shipman/Ian Huntley and co are or were nice people. As for this very vague phrase you keep using 'the prisoners perspective' - yes we do, its called the justice system in which we use a jury and a court to hear both sides of the case.
