Now I've been interested in looking at some classic films, somewhat so I can see how things have changed over the years but also just for pleasure.
What sort of classic films would you reccomend? Why? What sort of genre are they in and why do they appeal to you personally?
Thanks, +rep for good answers!

Jaws. It was the first film in history of take $100m at the box office and was the original summer blockbuster. It's a flawless masterpiece with one of the greatest scores in cinema history.

You're the one who wrote an article on that site with lots of film reviews aren't you? :P Yeah I think I may have a watch of that, thanks, +rep.

Article? 115 film and TV reviews ;)

No, Adam, you don't write at all. Remember? You're the Prep Cook in McDonalds with delusions of grandeur.
ANYWAY.
I would say The Godfather, although I don't agree with Adam that it's overrated, I would add that he is right to say that Part III is massively underrated.
On top of Classic Films, anything Kubrick and Hitchcock really.

I've just had a quick read of the review and it certainly looks interesting so I may have a watch of that also. Thanks, +rep

2012 and Jumper aren't, nor will ever be considered classics.

Yes, possibly not the sequels though.
Seven Samurai.

I'd say any Pixar movie is in instant classic.

Avatar is arguably an instant classic depending who you ask. Don't ask me though.

I agree with them all except Pirates. Fun films, yes, but they won't have any relevance in 20 years time. Shrek will, thanks to Pixar/Dreamworks popularizing CGI storytelling.

Depends what you class as classics: I'll go with pre 2000's
The Original star wars trilogy
The Original terminator and the sequal (Do not bother with the 3rd it's an abomination)
Toy Story
Die Hard 1, 2 and 3
Rat Race

True, beat a few records though :P
Another one, Lord of the Rings!

As did Meet the Spartans, and you wouldn't call that a classic would you? ;)
Rat Race
NO.
It's partially a remake of the absolute classic It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, which is really ought to be seen by anyone who owns a damn DVD player.

Yet it's a well made remake, has a high quality cast and is regarded highly.
In honsesty you are actually the first person to dislkie this film. Every other person i have discussed it with thinks of it as a comic master piece

I don't dislike it at all. I found it ballswhackingly hilarious, although the first act drones on for a bit.
"Regarded highly." -> http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/rat_race/ ouch.

Wow that has to be the lowest score i've seen for the movie haha. Normally see ratings of about 8/10 :P
I guess americans will hate it and the english would love it XD

I don't think it's a Classic film, but I will say that it's one of the most hilarious I've ever seen.

Rat Race most definitely isn't a classic in my eyes, nor have I ever seen anyone refer to it as a masterpiece. It's a good movie, but has a director who is a far better writer, and only creates cinematic magic when he's working with his brother and Jim Abrahams.

Way over half the films mentioned in this thread are definitely not classics. Especially when some of them were made only a couple of years ago. The thread starter clearly stated he wanted to see how things have changed over the years, so recommending films such as Avatar, Harry Potter and Shrek is not going to help.
I'll go with pre 2000's
Rat Race
Rat Race was released in 2001.

The Back to the Future Triology. The best set of films ever made in my opinion. Such good meaning and really interesting to look and what people thought the year 2000 would be like. On the other hand, such a depressing reminder of how (and what) we have developed into.

How far back are you willing to go?
Metropolis is a great movie.
So is M.
Okay, I might just be a Fritz Lang geek, but whatever.
EDIT: If you're really interested in early cinema, check youtube and other such sites. A lot of old movies are now public domain.
