View Full Version : Publicly recognizing rep!

Hey, this idea has been said in the like buttons thread, but seeing as it's a different idea, I decided to make a new post for it. (this is not my personal Idea)
I was thinking, if you want to get people posting more and also repping more because it encourages people to post more, you should start publicly recognizing rep. It wouldn't have to be over the top, and it wouldn't have to say who has left the rep, but I think it would help show people what makes a good post, and this in return could actually increase the ammount of decent threads that there are. Here is an example of what I mean, Sorry Alkaz for using you, but you had the smallest post I could see first.

As you can see, it doesn't make anything look ugly and it fits in quite well. Also this will encourage the use of more rep, and it will help new users understand what makes a good post.
EDIT: Obviously there wouldn't be a white patch next to it, that's just because I'm on my laptop not my desktop, so I could only use paint...

I think it could be a good idea to see how many times a post has been repped and will be interesting to see what other people think of the idea :)

I agree with this. In this instance, Alkaz would probably get lots of reputation just from this one post as people would probably follow like sheep, hence encouraging Alkaz to post more and encouraging people to give out rep. People also know what is rep worthy and will look for posts like his to give it out to.
There's nothing to lose with this really. Yeah it might make the postbit a bit more messy but I'm sure Jamsey can make it look nice :)

Nice idea though, I would guess it's something which could be done.

I'm glad everyone likes the idea :D. I can't think of any reasons why this wouldn't work, unless it's impossible to do it, but I doubt that as I've seen it on other forums. Wooooooh, 1600 Posts!

It's not easy to code something like that, it'd take quite a while to code then to implement it would be a totally new story. It would also slow down the time for the page to load.

I'm sure it would be easier to add rather than a 'Like' or 'Dislike' Button, and also on another forum I use, they have this and the pages don't take long to load, I can't imagine that being too much of an issue either.

i did the exact same thing as you and said it was a joke and got warned by rosie

It's not particularly difficult to add or implement. The offset being it will add another query for each post in the thread, the performance issues of this I am unsure - though the addition of the awards on the postbit made a negligible impact as far as I can tell.

To be fair i think it'd be easier to just add a "Thanks" plugin.

Is it a good idea? - Yes I think so and I generally really like it
Would it be hard for us to create or implement? - Probably not Jamesy is a technical genius
What impact will it have on page loads? - We won't know until we find out.
Will I ask Jamesy to test it? - Yep.
However I must state that if it does play up the page loading then we won't be having it, we have enough problems with server load times as it is :P

Yeah it probably will because it'll be a page query - so it runs when the page is loaded, whichever posts are on the page.

That's good then :D Hopefully it won't slow down the page loading time :P

Well it will, as I understand it (and my tech knowledge is limited) an extra query will be running per post, hopefully though it'll be a miniscule change that won't be noticable.

I think it'l be a few more querys not 100% sure but depending on how fast the sever is hopefully it can cope and wont effect the overall loading time of the page.

Nice to see this was implemented. One of the best updates in a while, imo :) Not to mention the notice warning people if it's an old thread.
Great work.

I'm glad my idea has been put to use. I haven't noticed any slowdown in page loading either :D It also fits in really well

I think the rep system needs to be changed to be the same as MyBB.

it's really interesting, i looked through my recent reps and in that 15 pages thread even though there were many good posts, there was only 5/6 of us repped and 2 were most likely oli making them feel welcome;) i thought i rarely got any rep but yeh, if i see a good post and no +1 i'm probably more likely to rep it now.
