View Full Version : Do your parents care about age ratings?

How strict are your parents in terms of what games you could buy, going back to when you were younger as well? I can remember getting GTA 3 when I first got my PS2, I must of been about 10 or 11 and it was rated 18. My parents just buy me any games and always have done, some people might think that's wrong to do but they haven't mentally affected me like they say video games sometimes do. It's strange because only recently I went to Asda to get myself GTA IV Liberty City Stories and I picked it up and went over to the till then realised, I wasn't going to be able to buy it because of the age restriction. That just shows how that the age restriction had never even crossed my mind because all my life it has never had to.

when i was younger they didnt let me play like 15s really, sometimes I could play my bros GTA game but they never bought them for me, but thats cos i wasnt really interested in games. I guess if there was an 18 I wanted they might have but I never tested it out and being not very interested in games then most of the things I wanted were my age (ish). I'd say since I got interested in games (around when I were 11/12, basically when I got my ps3) I got interested on more mature games and they never really minded. My dad used to say whenever I played GTA "youre not gonna be a mass murdered when youre older are you?" I always said "no". He doesn't do that now so I guess he thinks I can take it all in without having to go out irl and kill someone.

So basically no.

I'v pretty much had every GTA game, minus one or two of the originals. It hasn't effected me at all, brb gonna go kill a rabbit.

For a game to effect you, you have to have a screw loose in your head to begin with.

They built me up on a diet of low rated then high-rated, so that I became desensitized really. Didn't have any effect on me, otherwise they'd pull the plug.

Well, I think it's pretty clear, my parents don't care about age ratings if I tell you I play on MW2 and GTA IV and I'm 11 :D LOL but when I was like 6 I wasn't allowed 15s I was only allowed 12s :D

Chris

My mum and dad don't really care. Games don't influence me do stuff in real life cause it's a GAME.

Nope :) My dad was questionnable at first, but after noticing many of the games my brothers and I played were rated higher than what we were at the time, he sort of gave up and trusted we wouldn't become characters out of GTA :P My mum doesn't care either (or can't anymore, we'll over 18 :P) and she just saw them as games, as that is exactly what they are.

It never mattered to them what I got. When I was four years old I spent a lot of time at my uncle's house and I always watched tonnes of horror movies there, and since my fragile mind wasn't corrupt from watching movies for 18+ I guess that's why I was allowed games for any age.

I see a lot of people played GTA when they were younger despite it being rated 18, I think what was so good about it when we were younger (and still is) is the fact that you have a world that you can do anything you want, you have the freedom to drive cars/boats around and fly planes/helicopters or go around on massacres with your gun like in films you have seen. I wouldn't be surprised at all though if GTA has caused many young pre-teen players to do silly stuff like try driving cars irl.

well im 16 now so I can buy any films I like.. If i wanna buy an 18 I just order them online with my card :L

They never used to be strict at all, I was always allowed to watch the age rating that I wasnt allowed to watch so when i turned 12 i was allowed to watch 15.

The only game my mum doesnt want me playing is manhunt. i wouldnt really want to play it anyway.

I remember when she used to feign shock when i played gta 1 when i was 5.

i remember the only other media i wasnt allowed was kevin and perry go large until my 6th birthday :).

Only the real impressionable, naive or plain dumb :P The sort who can't tell the fictional/imaginary from reality. The sort you wouldn't hit round the head with a pillow because you'd be worried about doing major damage :P

Don't know about anywhere else, but in Scotland we get given ID; the 'Young Scot' card, when we're 12.

My mums never really cared, but my dad did.
I think the first 18 I asked for was GTA: Vice City when it came out, after I'd seen my friend playing it at his house, I was like 10.
I had games like Doom before that, that I'd gotten when I was even younger, but I was too scared to play them :P

When i was younger they were fairly strict, i think i was 13 by the time i had my first 15 rated game (Destroy all humans) but when i reached 15/16 they really mind what i played watch. and now i'm 17 they just leave it up to me

Would probably have been a little dissaproved of playing an 18 4 years ago, but still allowed and not really thought of. Age rating is more a maturity rating, or a mental age... or mental ability to differentiate between a game and real life.

They used to when i was like 15 trying to get a 18 but after i said i could get someone else to buy me it they baught me it next time we went into town. So yeh, I don't think so

Got GTA 3 when I was about 8, wasn't allowed Vice City though due to the name, "Vice" meaning sex which is where my parents draw the line. However from about age 13 I was allowed anything.

Mine don't really because they let me have like all the GTA sets.
