Nielsen has its own angle on the smartphone numbers game out today, and the results vaguely resemble the numbers from Canalys. Perhaps more interesting than the ever present market share tug-of-war (Nielsen pegs Google, RIM, and Apple at 27 percent, 33 percent, and 23 percent in sales to new smartphone subscribers, respectively) a note on brand loyalty turns out ugly for BlackBerry: while 89 percent of iPhone owners plan on getting another iPhone, and 71 percent of Android buyers plan to re-up, only 42 percent of BlackBerry owners plan to stick around. The defectors are pretty evenly split, with 29 percent planning to go iPhone, and 21 percent to go Android. That compares to 2 and 3 percent in the iPhone and Android camps planning a move to BlackBerry. We'll see if BlackBerry 6 can solve this little problem for RIM, but the few tweaks we've seen so far seem hardly capable of stemming the flow.

I think you all know this is one company I wouldn't hate to see closing :P

Hope so! Then at least I can make use of my WhatsApp Messenger when all my mates get an iPhone, fed up of everyone using BBM!

Blackberries are for Businessmen & women, and people who need to be well connected to their email... But then, the iPhone (in my opinion) does that alot better. I think it's just businessmen find touchscreen a bit gimmicky.

I always wonder why teenagers buy blackberries, it's just... Weird LOL.

Because they are ALOT cheaper than iPhones/good androids and they get to save money again through Blackbery Messenger (BBM). I see a lot of people using them for facebook at school so I guess they must be ok at browsing the internet.

True on price... Yeah, I just think they're iPhones/androids for poor people/kids who can't be trusted with expensive goods then. Everyone should have an iPhone, full stop. (LOL singleminded)

Single minded or not, you are right! My mum has had the purple blackberry curve and never really thought much of it, got the samsung galaxy and thought it was too complicated then I finally persuaded her to get the iPhone 4 and she LOVES it!! She is never off it now, I think the fact that I have had virtually the same phone for over 3 years now (the iPhone) and I love it and use it just as much as I did the day I got it, it made her realise that it must be something special.

I've never really had an issue with Blackberrys.

What always has confused me is is all of the young people getting them and using outside of the environment they're intended for - business.

What do you mean by version?

I guess it's just because they are a good phone for the price, they appeal to all kinds of people really.

Personally I dont mind blackberrys, I did have one before I got myself an iPhone purely so I could have all my music on my iPhone aswell. But I think the 50% is probably looked at in a bigger scale as Blackberrys went up in popularity HUGELY last year and with the release of the iPhone 4 you can expect that alot of people will be swapping in.

Tho, 50% is a VERY LARGE percentage, i would have expected around 20%.

I couldn't understand it when my Bro asked for a BB to upgrade to at work, he could have picked any phone at all from the T-Mobile UK store at no cost... and he picked a BB. Apparently he thinks Android and iOS is crap... coming from a guy who know about tech too :O

Shame on him, Tom. He hasn't given Android or iOS a fair shake!

That's not true at all I agree. I get IMAP push email and exchange support for Android, and let me tell you, it's a heck of a lot easier reading emails on my WVGA multitouch screen with SWYPE than it is on a QVGA or worse blackberry :P

I really don't like the atitude you give towards blackberrys. They are good phones if you get to use them, we have apps on them and some of them are not cheap, but are the same price as the iPhone.

Blackberrys are big piles of joby. Difficult to use, boring to look at and oh so ubiquitous. I'm actually sick hearing about them and their stupid BB pins.

BB pins are stupid. If I want free texting or calling it's built into my Nexus One anyway. It came with Google Voice!

What you'd call an application for your blackberry would not qualify as an application for iOS or Android due to a serious lack of quality. This is the beef I have with Blackberries. The nature of the operating system in conjunction with the hardware specifications of the devices restrict any quality worth-while application development from existing. You saying a BlackBerry costs as much as a higher than WVGA multitouch device with thousands of quality applications and a full features web browser does not help your stance :P

thats because alot of people that bought blackberrys bought them for the hype and now the hype's moved to android, so they're switching.

but people who buy things for those/that reason are just absolute douches.

i couldn't live without my blackberry, i really couldn't.

You can't get it out of the US.

Although people are. There's many free ways to get it, Tom, search Google!

The Blackberry camera is awful :S I use my phone because it's fast and it sits on my pocket and I can just use it when I need to use the camera. Simple really :/

I like the idea of BBs, but I just know that I'd rather get an Android, there's something about that cute little green droid they have that makes me want to get one haha
