Bummer. Usually Acer is the king of cheaper bang for the buck of laptops. You're right about that processor in my opinion. I'd look for something with atleast an Intel core 2 duo.

www.dell.co.uk, sorted.

If you want a decent laptop, don't get an Acer, stick to Dell, Samsung, ASUS and HP.

Toshiba make some great laptops that are in the same price range as Dell/Acer.

I was looking at laptops yesterday (same position as you) - and this one seems pretty good, http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/dell-inspiron-n5010-blue-04952408-pdt.html

Same.

We stick to Dell laptops and desktops for a reason at work, they provide bang of the buck, are sturdy, last a long time, easy to get parts for and their support is really good.

Nope, the HDMI is for connecting your laptop to a TV to view your laptop screen on the TV

Unfortunately I don't think he is. Think how unhappy I was when I realised I couldn't even connect my games console up to my iMac. :l

ok so, ive picked my laptop i think; Dell Studio 17. The basics are:

Intel® Core™ i5-520M (2.4GHz, 4 Threads, turbo Boost up to 2.93GHz, 3MB cache)
500GB HDD
4GB RAM
17" Screen
Backlit Keyboard

I cant remember if theres anything else. That comes to a total of £788 in total, even after discounts and stuff. Is this reasonable?

also, when would be the best time to buy from them. Ive used a 5% discount code which ends today, as well as there £160 off deal which ends tomorrow. Any advice?

I remember reading that if you use the site http://www.quidco.com/ you can get some money back through cashback (7% I think it is) :) I would probably buy it today if you can!

If its for Uni why do you need such high spec? Even if you wanted to view TV on it that wouldn't require more than a normal £300/£350 one from PC World.

Save your money for when you need to pay off your Uni debts, or a lovely 32" Samsung TV to play the aforementioned 360 & PS3 on.

Basically, It's gonna be a desktop replacement. At home and at uni. So I'd prefer it to run pretty well, with good specs.

I have now been looking at Sony vaio's, which seem pretty good, and on the slightly cheaper side too. Dell wouldn't give me 320gb, with a blue case and 4gb memory. Was ridiculous. I'd have had to pay more, for less!

Vaio's are good laptops the bad side is if you break them you have to send them back to sony and it'll cost a bomb.

Different computers have different specifications Sacha. You cannot say an entire brand of computers is slow based on one model because every model is completely different :P

Takes 20 seconds to shutdown the ones we buy at school, and that includes syncing files across the network. Don't see the problem with them to be honest.
