View Full Version : Having an iPhone gets annoying...

Apple
23-08-2010, 11:58 AM
The iPhone 4 has just done it for me now. I have always had the iPhone, 2g, 3g, 3gs, and now the 4 but what has got increasingly annoying is the reputation the iPhone has. I love the iPhone, it is probably my favourite piece of technology - ever.

The problem is that I can't just get it out anywhere without either A) People saying "wow nice an iPhone can I have a look", B) Getting called a showoff, C) It is a very delicate phone and I want to keep it looking nice so a lot of things I get up to put it at risk of damage and C) When I am out on friday/saturday there are always loads of different groups of people that you wouldn't trust with a pound so it just feels so dodgy when making calls or texting people and you start to notice people looking at you.

Here is my old Sony Ericsson W950i. It was a great phone in it's day and I still love it. I am now going to be using this whenever I know I might be hanging around with the wrong sort or doing stuff where anything in my pocket could fall out or get crushed.

Gotta say OP, this does seem like a bit of a show off thread, so here's my phone, I love it, as soon as I got it everyone wanted to touch it.

I think this is a show off thread trying to be covered as a rant so people know you have an iphone.

I have an iphone as well..wooo?

Yes reading this thread would probably give you the idea that I have an iPhone... Your post pretty much shows how much people fuss over the iPhone. You'd probably be put into the category of people calling me a showoff for using it in public lol.

Excuse me? Why are you questioning my age? What position are you in to call my reasons lame, if you don't have one then you wouldn't understand.

I would rather have my Motorola Milestone than an iPhone 4.

I didn't experience these issues, I am therefore accusing you of lying unless you live in a very poor area of England. Nobody cares about iPhones in the UK any more. And if you have an iPhone 4 even after knowing about all of these problems and then complain about it you have some issues that need resolving. (Hint: Stop talking about your iPhone and stop caring about it and all of your problems ~*magically go away*~)

I wouldn't go that far sadly.

Younger people seem to think an iPhone is the best invention ever - far better than the wheel.

Oh dear, shall we just get the MODs to close this pointless thread now? You say to Intel "Your post pretty much shows how much people fuss over the iPhone. You'd probably be put into the category of people calling me a showoff for using it in public lol." and then you say to me "do you have an iPhone 4? If you don't then you won't understand.", I'm not about anyone else however this strikes me as 'LOOK. LOOK. I AZ IPHONE 4.

I question your age because you remind me of a twelve year old. You seem like you want the world to know you've got the iPhone 4. You stated you had previous models, why do we need this information? Surely if you had previous models you would have felt the same about "loads of different groups of people that you wouldn't trust with a pound so it just feels so dodgy when making calls or texting people and you start to notice people looking at you", why didn't you create a thread earlier on about the worries you had when you had the other models? Why create a thread telling us about your worries when you're making a call? Out of interest, did you drop signal during these phone calls? Just wondering because I like to hold a phone call without dropping signal.

You say you're scared when you're out. Of whom? Adults? Big people? Is this because you're small? All these things would answer my confusion about your pretty lame moans at the iPhone. Surely it's not Apples fault you feel scared using it? If you 'love' the iPhone why create a thread crying over how annoying it is? Surely if you love it you can get over the annoying things (i.e. being scared of big people) and see that it's a decent bit of kit when it doesn't drop signal, doesn't get bricked by an update etc?

But I do find it bizarre that people crowd round you? From what I've witnessed everyone either has a Blackberry or an iPhone now? It's not the figure it once was, it's no longer 'oh wow!' it's more 'oh right :S'. It drops signal. It gets bricked by updates. Everyone has one. Oh wow? You have one? So does my mum! Hell yeah, she must be as cool as you.

Well I don't live in the best of areas and our school is near quite a few rough areas to. I can imagine that in better schools/areas nobody will even blink an eye lid when someone gets one out but here it always gets quite a lot of fuss made out of it. Like on the last day of school in form, everyone had their phones out but as soon as I got mine out the attention I was getting was just hideous. I was getting pretty much all comments mentioned in my original post all at the same time lol. I'd just love to be able to have a phone that I can use anywhere without attracting any unwanted attention.

Also this is the first technology section of a forum I have ever seen where you actually get accused of showing off for discussing a piece of technology. At least it kind of proves my point anyway that it does attract a lot of unwanted attention such as getting called a showoff.

You are showing off so what's the problem? You complain that you get called a showoff whilst showing off and you get called a showoff.

Imagine this forum as a bunch of rich kids (Some of us are) with lots of technology talking about things they enjoy, not things that are the latest and shiniest. That is the technology forum. With the odd exception of a guy like you who walks in and boasts about his iPhone 4 (We all (for the most part) have better phones) and then gets yelled at and then they complain but it all blows over and nothing more is heard of it. That's pretty much what is happening here.

You shouldn't own an iPhone 4 unless you're in an area that doesn't care about it else it's just going to cause problems.

Now I'm off to Waitrose to go pick up some meat from the ~*FRESH MEAT COUNTER*~ for my dinner tonight. Spaghetti bolognese if you must know.

With Dolmio.

Light.

Because it tastes exactly the same as not light.

You don't really understand where I am coming from. The people who I dislike having my phone out near aren't "scary" because they are big and I am small (which isn't the case), it's because they are the sort that are from rough council estates who hang around in big groups and carry knives and such. Last time we were out SMB (some random gang) came to royton park, they had all their hideous location jackets with them balaclava type things on started trying to talk to us all. Now seeing as they are the type that will gang up on one person and kick the crap out of them just because he looked at them funny, anything of value you get out your pocket is going to be theres if they want it. Also answer this one please. If having an iPhone is in the norm now and everybody has one, surely it would be impossible to show off with it? Also why I have never got so pissed of with it before is because the iPhone has never been so high-profile. It's like everyone knows what it is now.

Dunno why you're bothered, if this is srs business, you can just write the IMEI down somewhere at home then if it gets stolen it's no big deal, you ring your network's customer service, give them the IMEI and it makes them unusable for the most part.

I can imagine something like that happening to me. So was the difference in attention you got significant when you switched back to the 3GS? I suppose if you had a previous model all you have to say is "yh got it off ebay for £90, it freezes a lot", then in their eyes you aren't actually showing off anymore if that makes sense? That would make me feel more comfortable to have it out anyway.

Just because it an apple product doesn't mean they can have a look. Tell them to piss off or to be nice, tell them to visit their local apple store.

Just because it an apple product doesn't mean they can have a look. Tell them to piss off or to be nice, tell them to visit their local apple store.lol that's the route to popularity i'm sure. it's just a phone, let people have a look. you should get a case or insurance if you've issues with letting people take a peek.

To be fair I think some iPhone users bring it on themselves, they constantly have their phone out, and often hold it in special ways just so people can see it's an iPhone or carry on about it constantly. I'm not saying 'Apple' does this but some iPhone users do and frankly if these people get harassed or mugged I couldn't care less. If you don't have your phone out every minute and cup it close to you, it'll just look like any other touch-screen phone to everyone else and you won't be bothered about it.

The iPhone is also not delicate, Apple products always have a fair amount of resistance particularly with cases. Whenever I've dropped HTCs, Nokias etc they fall to pieces or break up sometimes, iPhones don't do this (with the exception of the iPhone 4).

If you're not a show-off why are you worried about the iPhone 4s recent bad publicity and reputation?

Plus I do not believe this really seeing as most people have used or seen iPhones by now, there really isn't a buzz around them anymore. As an original iPhone user, surely you would know there was a much bigger fuss with them 3 years ago when they were very rare and miles ahead of other mobiles.

If I am totally honest the reason why I never had any problems before was because my social life was almost non existent lol. Now that I am going out much more and hanging out with loads of new people I am starting to realise that having such an expensive piece of kit with you attracts too much unwanted attention. I'd just love to be able to have a phone that I can go on anywhere without fear of people attempting to mug me (lol) or getting accused of being a showoff for using it in front of everyone.

Has anyone ever had a W950i or resistive touch screen phone? My screen isn't responding to my touches (nail or stylus), I haven't got a clue what to do. It's normally just a case of doing a hard reboot or hooking it up to itunes and resetting it with my iphone. :l

Because you're coming off as showing off. You seem to be more excited to tell people what phone you have than the securities of modern day living in rough areas, and the effect having a smartphone has on you as a target for robbery. So far you've been focusing on the iPhone, than any expensive devices in general or the chances of being robbed, only caring about yourself and the iPhone. Infact, you've not really given anyone a chance to discuss this :P

Looking at the original post, you're delighting in the fact you're getting attention, rather than asking if anyone else notices the insecurities of owning a smartphone i.e. creating a discussion. I can see why people are calling you a show off, but I agree that expensive devices (not just the iPhone) get alot of attention. The main difference is that the iPhone gets extra attention for little to no rational reason with the price of used ones on ebay going for quite alot.

It's like even when I got something as little as new school shoes everyone just automatically assumed they were fake, obviously I never take them on. I guess it's hard for people to emphasise with me as not many people are in similar positions to me, just to make you realise how bad it actually is, when my dad picked me up from school the next day I got asked if he was a drug dealer... I suppose it's not really to bad, it's not rough as in people getting stabbed and such all the time, more just that they come from poorer backgrounds backgrounds. I don't mean to come across as self centred, I would really like to hear if anyone else has similar problems with their smart phone like a few that have already posted in the thread.
