Latley my internet has been weird often going really slow - often unplugging the router sorts this.

I noticed a lot of the time it does this there is an error in the event viewer:

"TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts"

Now it could be because of spyware/viruses etc so i heasrd but ive ran a few scans with stuff and it seems i'm clean.

I also heard about running cmd from run then typing netstat -no - but i have no idea what is legimit and what isn't and so on.

Anyone know of a fix - a way to prevent this.

Thanks.

Im not extremely tech savvy in this, but what are you doing at the time this happens? From what i know of TCP, it could be that you're connecting a lot of internet applications at once (Steam, msn, games etc.)

Just had a google and what Nemo said is about right, it can be caused by you using too many internet enabled programs at once.

The NETSTAT command can help because it can tell you what programs are using the internet but I'm not entirely sure how to do it, just tried it myself and just kept getting help text :P

Often i'm using just windows live messenger with firefox and a couple of tabs running and sites can start loading really slowly until i reboot the router.

Earlier my net just kept just going on and off with that error appearing and the two just on.

I've often been broadcasting, had msn, firefox, skype on and so on and had no problems at all

Amazing what u can pick up from simply learning to port forward xD

Sounds like a problem with your router then, have ugot another one u can try it with? Or just ur modem perhaps?

Trojan or some form of virus.

Format. Reinstall. Done.

yeah if you have a virus it could be using the tcp/ip ports and forwarding information out of your computer. but if your pc is clean, well some program or somethings using these ports which is why unplugging the router would normally fix it. do a system restore to an earlier date.

Agreed.

Also for future reference, to use netstat in command prompt it's "netstat -b", or you can download the TCPView application from Microsoft for free.

Do a jew bear.

The router from o2 can handle lots of connections just fine. It's likely that when you reboot the router, Windows closes all of the connections excess that are open from your PC and that's why it's fast again.

I figured out what was causing the problem. A bit ago I'd noticed a downloader.exe in my process - a google search said it could be a virus disguised as a system file or an actual system file. It was classed as a system file and was actually part of the Bitdefender Total Security 2011 Beta - I had thought maybe its that causing the problem as its beta - but needed to check first. It had quite a few connections when the problem occured and now i've uninstalled the beta - didn't realise the full one was out, the problem doesn't occur. Thanks everyone.
