Hi, my friend has asked me to take him to work tomorrow, Saturday, Sunday & Monday which I have kindly agreed to do so. He said he would give me £10 for it after upping it from £7. I've tried working out if he is ripping me off with regards to fuel but I am so bad at Maths and would like someone else to help me from the following information below.

When I bought the car, the eBay description said it does 42MPG.

Fuel here is 116.9p for unleaded petrol.

His place of work is 15 miles away. This means 30 miles each day for me. I will not be picking him up, only taking him there.

Can someone help? Thanks

That doesn't sound enough to me. What's the mpg on your car?

Well thats 30 miles there and back so I would say it would only just cover it.

I would assume you are being ripped off enormously, a taxi charges about £10 for 4 miles just to put things into perspective.

42MPG is only what you'll achieve when driving at about 50MPH consistently for a length of time, the rest of the time it'll be much lower than that. Not sure how I'd do the maths though seeing as you buy petrol in litres and MPG uses gallons. Bare in mind it's going to take you a lot of time too. I'd say £25 minimum, but personally I think that's worth about £50 even at mates rates.

I normally totally rip everyone off whos paying to get somewere because i hate it when things like this happen i charge like £14-15 from kenilworth to lem and thats like 7 miles max aha

You also haven't realised your most likely driving him there and back for about 20p, Plus wear and tear of your car. So your making a loss

When my older brother started to drive he once pinched a monitor out of an old taxi at a scrapyard. Still worked so he managed to get it working in his car, then for a joke when people would ask him for lifts he'd turn it on like a taxi. Never got old lol, bet he still has it somewhere.

Just say no? I hate people who ask me for lifts, even if they offer to pay. It's very rude.

I probably wouldn't mind if it was a good friend, favours you give always come back round.

Don't trust the MPG it said on ebay, yes it might be able to do that but only if you are driving super economically. If I am honest I don't think he is offering enough unless that is per day, there is doing someone a favour but there is also bending over backwards for them.

Also who -repped me for my post being irrelevant? Bit tight as it hardly was irrelevant was it?

it wasnt me, but, you can see that it was a bit irrelevant.. it has nothing to do with the post, and not on topic. just you telling us about someone with a taxi meter in their car :S

definitely not enough. £10 a day would be much better

It was hilarious though. The faces of his friends when they got in and he turned the meter on was priceless, they were just like wtf lol?

But yeh I'm not suggesting you put a meter in your car or anything, just working out as best you can how much petrol you will use, you can also throw a bit on for your time but obviously not too much as he is your mate.

I've probably misunderstood this somehow, but how exactly am I not being a "good mate" when I am giving him lifts to work?

What he is saying, is if you moaned asking for more you are not being a good mate.

Although I disagree - you have every right to ask for more

if a really good mate wanted lifts to work i'd not complain about the few quid you go over, i'd do it for nothing if it was on my way to work as i know i'd get the favour returned to me.

I've spent roughly $500 on gas driving back and forth to Canada... you are being ripped off on gas money alone, not to mention wear and tear on your vehicle.. I dont care about wear and tear but I was astounded at the amount of gas I used..

Just ask him for another fiver. Most of my friends aren't money grabbing, if they scratch my back then I'll repay the favour another time and scratch their back.

Ripped off to the max there. But also, have to comment on the price of petrol where you live! It hasn't been that high for ages here - 110.9p currently at the supermarkets here.

It's now 115.9p since I posted this thread. Does it change at the start of every month or something?
